Keeping Salad Fresh

Does anyone know how to keep bagged tossed salad fresh once you open it? (I know - cheaper to make it myself, but I am WAY more likely to eat it if it's already there, so I indulge when it's on sale.) The problem is I don't use a whole bag at once, and it goes bad even before the exp. date! Is there a better way to store it?

As soon as i open salad i put it in a fresh bag i also have a salad spinner so i re wash it till it is really dry then i put it in bags making sure to get all air out of bag it helps but still have to use it in a few days.:cool1::cool1:

My salad always stays well in an aluminum or steel bowl covered with aluminum foil. I'll bet Alton Brown can tell me why.

These are all good ideas. Washing it works best for me, but it still goes bad pretty fast. Not as fast as when I just close the bag up and leave it in there though. I'll have to try the metal bowl and foil.

Alton Brown can tell you alot of things about how the food works the way it does. I love his show GOOD EATS!!!!

Lock and locks from QVC work amazingly well. I personally do not like the bagged salad, but I can buy and head a lettuce, chop it up and store it in a lock and lock with a papertowel on top to absorb moisture and that lettuce will stay fresh for at least 2 weeks.

Green Bags! I can keep lettuce for two weeks in one. They sell them at Bed Bath and Beyond. You get like ten bags for less then 10 bucks. Each bag is good for about ten uses. Just make sure your veg is dry befor you put them in. I thought it was a hoax but they really do work. I"ve also done the dry paper towel in a ziplock bag and this will work for about a week or so but not always.

paper towel in the bag to soak up extra moisture. Thats what works for me! I hardly ever buy bagged salad, but if I make more salad than we need I put it in a ziplock, add the towel, press out excess air & seal. It is usually good for a few days.

bed bath and beyond sells these green discs called extralife. You throw them in your veggie drawer. They last 3 months and they absorb the gases that vegies/fruits emit. I swear by them - my bagged salad lasts 2 weeks beyond the exp date ! I think they are about $5 each. when those $5coupons come out I stock up.

Not necessarily recently (i.e. last couple of months) but I've seen Lock & Lock containers at Shaw's.

Not sure about bagged salad, but I chopped up a head of iceberg and 3 romaine hearts 2.5 weeks ago and ate the last of it last night..it was still fresh. I used the equivalent of lock & lock that I picked up at Target. I think it was Sterilite brand.4 lock seals....put a paper towel on top and it really did last.

Just buy some romaine, wash it, and bag it for the week - lasts way longer than bagged lettuce, and tastes SO much better! :thumbsup2

I just wash a head of green leaf lettuce or Romaine lettuce, spin it out in my Tupperware Salad Spinner, and keep it in the Spinner in the refrigerator. I don't pour the water out of the bottom part of the Salad Spinner, which I think helps keep it fresh. I then tear up the lettuce leaves when I need them for salad. My lettuce stays fresh for at least two weeks or until we eat it. It tastes much better than that bagged stuff. ;)

I do the same thing. I buy Hearts of Romaine, cut it up and put it in a paper towel lined lock and lock with a paper towel on top. It stays green and doesn't get slimey.

I use a wet paper towel. Someone told me about this and it works very well. They said that they saw it on Martha Stewart. You know how in the supermarkets they keep spraying the lettuce with the water, well this works the same way. I put in tupperware and put in a wet papertowel.

Rubbermaid makes a veggie/fruit container that has this removable stand on the bottom and it got little vent holes on the side of the lid(they are clear with a light green lid). Ziploc also has these veggie bags that have little wholes in it that is supposed to keep the produce fresh as well. I personally have used the Rubbermaid one and I love it. I use it on everything and it really works for me.

ditto this. These bags are invaluable and reusable. I cannot tell how much produce it has saved for me.
