Disney takes risk, adds time shares despite recession

The Orlando Sentinel says the building of 4 new DVC resorts "constitute the most ambitious expansion yet for Disney Vacation Club" and that "It may also be the riskiest".

The growth spurt comes as Vacation Club, like many other units across Walt Disney Co.'s media-and-entertainment empire, is being buffeted by the global recession and credit squeeze. Sales at the Celebration-based time-share business fell during the three months that ended March 28 — the first quarterly decline Disney has recorded at its time-share arm in at least 3 ½ years.

I think the big question will be how does the current economy impact future growth. Longer it takes to sell the WDW locations the longer it will take to begin a new project. If there is a significant halt in expansion I'd imagine the unit will become even less profitable.

And yet the rumor is that sales at BLT are good enough that they no longer need any sales incentives and will discontinue them in June...:confused3

I would have to agree that there is potential to devalue the other DVC's but there is alot of factors to this end. An over abundance of inventory only serves to help the consumer of which I am one and will take advantage of!:thumbsup2

I'm sure there will MANY and varied opinions...Shawnpirate:

Someone just bought and was told by their guide to hold the contract until they hear the webcast on the 10th, then they can adjust it or send it in or whatever, so it sounds like new incentives to me. On the other hand, I guess they could be halting them, but after reading the article, I would think there will be new incentives. I haven't even told DH about the current incentive with the $ off since I pushed hard to buy in January and of course we could have gotten better incentives if we waited. You just never know.

As you know, Annie, rumor is rumor. We'll see in mid-June. It's just folks talking 'til then. ;)

BLT was gonna sell out in 6 months too and we see how that went, didn't we? I'm still betting 12-18 more months. :)

Rumor... such a rumor is useful to encourage potential buyers to "act now." In timeshare, there's always a new "hook" around the corner. So while there may or may not be an interim without DVC purchase incentives, there will be one soon, even if it's just for other DVC home resorts. The longer folks wait, the more likely they'll see resales available at a particular home resort too.

Someday perhaps we'll collectively realize that all it takes to start a rumor is computer access. ;) Statements like that are so ludicrous they aren't even worthy of the term "rumor."

So DVC is going to go from a $16 per point discount to no discount overnight. Let me guess--the same source is predicting a price increase too, huh? :rotfl:

The smart current purchasers will set it up so there cancellation period will overlap the 15th so if there is a better deal they can get it, and if the new one is not they have the old one.

That is what I am doing. My guide and I already discussed it. I am starting the paperwork for my add on next week. It will lock me into getting the $8.00 per point discount on my 50 points. But, between the webcast and what happens on the 15th, if there are better incentives, I will redo the contracts. If not, then I sign them, send them back, and close.

Either way, I get the points next week.

I am also planning on adding on 50 points next week at BLT! I called my guide today but as of yet, I am not in the system. Hopefully, I will be in sometime during the next few days. Just in time for the purchase under current incentives! :thumbsup2
