The What's For Dinner Thread - Feb '09(recipe index in OP)

I love caffeine free diet coke:drinking1, that is my weakness. No tips on giving up soda, I wish I could help!

As far as Mother's Day, no plans yet. I have a BIG birthday this week to get through psychologically first!:lmao: Knowing us we will probably just have a relaxing day, and take a ride over to visit my Mom. My DM usually likes to stay home so everyone can come by for a visit at some point in the day. If she has no plans maybe I will have them over for dinner.

Not sure what I am doing today yet. Usually we go to my parents for dinner on Mondays but I think I want one more day for DS & I to get well. We had a good night sleep last night, thankfully he decided to sleep all night!:woohoo:

Bethany- the stress is not helping anything. Stay in your jammies and relax today.

Maria- your Mother's Day plans sound lovely. Your Mom is going to be very happy!

Kat-Champagne Brunch? Yumm!

Glynis- I meant to tell you that your story made me :goodvibes. You must have a gentle way with children :goodvibes

We used to get together with my DMIL and my DSIL on Saturday night. It was less stressful than trying to fit into a busy restaurant. My Mom liked to be home or have breakfast at my sisters so this worked out well for all of us. This year is off kilter. We are joining my sister and DBIL on Saturday night to see Phantom of the Opera. Buddy has never seen it so I think he will enjoy it. Sunday is my DDIL's birthday so we will have her request Mexican lasagna for dinner. I'll see if my IL's want to come.

I have Kady home today, her tummy is sick . Nola is wired for sound though so this is going to be one interesting day!

Welby brought over a walker. I know that they can be dangerous if you are not careful but I am on one level, my stairs are behind a door and I have all open space on hardwood floors. Nola is runnig all over the place. Welby is looking forward to her walking but we kept telling her not to rush it. Too late now.....she has figured the feet thing out and will be :woohoo: by herself shortly. I had to park her in the exersaucer thing so I could run to the bathroom....she is like a rocket!

DInner is going to be something with that steak I bought. If I cannot grill then it will be beef and mushrooms. I will have green beans and salad. I really want rice but Buddy hates it. We'll see.......

Awesome! Just relax today. There is a lot to be said for just resting.

Phantom ...oh how wonderful! I loved it when DM & I went. I could see it a thousand times and still get goose bumps. I hope he enjoys it.

I hope Kady feels better, the poor thing. I know Nan is going to take good care of her.

I am picturing Nola shooting around your house and it has me smiling. Reminded me of when my parents bought a bouncer swing for DS that you attach to a doorway. He would bounce up and down with so much excitement we all just laughed at him.

If it makes you feel better I had watermelon last night, no ice cream...now you have me craving rice with gravy!! (thanks to this thread!)

Morning all. It finally stopped raining. We got around 7 inches this weekend. Yuck! The sun isn't out yet, but at least it's not raining. WFD gonna be breakfast for dinner.

Not sure on Mother's Day plans. At least this year I don't have to work! :cool1: Okay, gotta get the troops out the door!

Morning all, hope everyone is well this morning.

Ann- I know I've asked this before, but I can't remember- when is little Emma do to arrive?

Laura and Bethany- Thanks for having faith in me in getting my pictures. The thing is I just learned how to get them off the memory card onto the computor. I have a pretty big collection of cards, I just kept getting new ones. So far CVS seems like it will be the easiest way to go.

Becky- I had a mandoline accident once, I think it's one of those things you only do once. I was slicing carrots.

Nancy- shhh, we used a walker too. Guess what, she turned out okay.

Maria- I know it's hard not to worry, after my husbands hospital stay I was nervous for a while. The poor guy was watched all the time. I know it's scary, but it does get easier.

Sorry I hate soda so no tips there. I also don't care for mussels, I can't get past the orange color.

It sounds like lots of sisters here got to watch their brothers make the cars for cubscouts. It always looked like so much fun. All I did in girlscouts was cover a hanger in yarn.

Lauren- If you haven't left for trader joe's yet, pick up a box of gorganzola crisps, they are so tasty and I hate gorganzola.

So for mother's day we are doing nothing, that's my request. I figured out last year I'm a mom too and I don't need to be guilted into picking one of our mom's houses to go to. It's also our last day we both have off until September, so I'd like it to be just the three of us.

Steak, brown rice, and a veg for dinner. See you all later.

Bethany what time do you get to Boston Friday?
If I meet Greg we are coming home Friday but not sure what time.

Ann~ by July you can have the cocktail of your choice.

Anyone had to kick the diet soda habit? Any hints? I'm having a tough time.
I've been drinking flavored seltzer..the one I like best is the La Croix brand from Target..just an FYI. The last week I have tried so many brands & I like La Croix alot. Diet soda is really an addiction:confused:

Finally decided what is happening Mother's Day. It's the 1st time in 6 years my Mom has been off. We are going to mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral, then brunch with my Aunt, 2 cousins, nephew & nieces close to Central Park & then going into the park...if it rains we will head to the Museum of Natural History or the MET...What are all you Mommies out there doing?

I don't have an idea of what we're doing for Mother's day. My family usually takes over the cooking on that day, and I just get to laze around. Not a bad deal for me!

Bethany - Hang in there. The job is almost over. In the meantime, take it easy today!

Ann - You take it easy, too! You and Luke need to get better and a day of snuggling just might do the trick!

Lauren - I posted on your pics on facebook, but I have to say, if I looked as good as you do, as soon after my baby was born, I'd be putting myself in every picture. You are GORGEOUS!!!!!!!

Well, I think tonight will be spaghetti casserole. Not sure though. Gotta see if I have any hamburger.

I wanted to let y'all know, I may be offline for a while. My computer has been acting all wonky, so Alan is taking it to the "computer hospital" to be looked at. I will miss y'all so much! I'll look for you in our new home! In the meantime, I'll have to console myself with the buy one, get one free book sale at the kid's school this morning. I'll be able to get all the kids summer reading taken care of, and hopefully some for me, too!

Ann- I know I've asked this before, but I can't remember- when is little Emma do to arrive?

She is due June 23...boy is time flying. I can't believe I am already at 33 weeks. This pregnant lady needs to get her butt in gear. I have alot to do before she arrives.

Have fun shopping for books today. I used to love when they had book sales at my old job, and I am not even a reader. We will miss you, update us when your computer is feeling better!:rotfl:

I agree with you about Lauren. Believe me my picture will not be getting posted anywhere.

DM just called and offered to take care of us for dinner. I told her I had to see what the day brought. I almost wonder if we have allergies even though I have never had them before pregnancy really screws with my system.

Nancy, I hope Kady feels better soon!

I really think she was tired from the past two weeks. She told me she needs some snuggling :goodvibes With all that is going around it made no sense to send her to school if she was run down and needed one day to catch up. Besides.....Nana misses her ;)

I had to call in sick again today. :sad2:

As someone's already mentioned, stress can wreak havoc. Relax today.

Hope Kady's tummy gets better. I can picture NOLA scooting all around today.;)

Thanks for letting us know, we would have worried, hurry back!

Gloomy Monday here, we're under a tornado watch. Guess what starts in less than a month? Hurricane season.....:sad2:

WFD - Roast beef po-boys and sweet potato fries.

Life is so hectic, but I am finally caught up. I am sorry if I missed anyone, but here is my best attempt at catching everyone

Well ladies I think I have a date tomorrow.:scared: wish me luck. I meet someone who seems really nice. It would be nice to go out once in a while. Alex will be doing the same someday.

How was your date? I hope it was great!

Come on! The only requirement is you must be able to tune out the Blue's Clues and/or Teletubbies that will be playing almost constantly from Hailey's TV. And you must be willing to be at her beck and call. ;) She thinks that everyone who is with her must be there to serve her every need. She is at that developmental age when she still thinks that it is an honor to be selected to be the one to fill her juice cup, etc. I can't tell you how many of our friends who have had a sucker shoved into their hands to be opened or a juice cup given to them to be filled. But she isn't shy. :lmao:

Nola just started with Blue's Clues. :scared: That is one show I cant handle! You have never had a Mickey Bar? Seriously?

Marisa, how is Kady enjoying her allergy free lifestyle! She is very lucky. Hope you are getting settled in the new house.

She is loving her new allergy free lifestyle! We went out for ice cream Tuesday night at a local ice cream place. She was so excited to get a cone with rainbow sprinkles and sit on their picnic tables. The weird thing was that she ordered VANILLA!!?!?! :confused3

We are pretty much settled. I need to unpack more bins but I put them in the basement. Out of sight out of mind, right? When the computer is set up in the basement I will have no choice but to get rid of the bins. But I have a few more days. Nan has my truck, and she warned me that she is filling it with more of my stuff. I think it is never-ending:confused:

Hi ladies! (and any men lurkers ;))

Here are the mint juelps I made for the Kentucky Derby:

NASTY! Neither John nor I could even drink this. Bourbon is NASTY, yuck. It went down the drain. I do like bourbon in recipes--like bourbon glazed chicken, but NOT for drinking. YUCK. (Apologies to anyone that likes bourbon :) )

That drink looked so good. Do you know how to make mojitos? Those are my favorite!

So I had this strange dream last night but only remember bits of it. I was paying for something but using a debit card. For some reason, you added the tip in through the debit card machine - not written in on the little paper. :confused3 Well, the machine malfunctioned. The total was something like 43.17 and I was trying to make it an even 50 as the total. Well, it charged me $1000! So then I had to go to the guest service counter (at Target) to have them fix the error. But I had to use the bathroom, so I was looking for it, and it didn't say "Women" on the door, it had my first and last name. :confused3 Then I woke up. :rotfl:

The night before, I had a dream that I remember very little of, except that I woke up confused. Somebody said that there were the words "home sweet home" written in a cornfield like a corn maze...in Texas but you had to see it from the sky. In my dream, I wanted to go to google maps satellite view so I could look at it, but then when I woke up I was just really confused because I didn't know what the word "home" meant. :confused3

Your dreams are hilarious!:lmao:

I was actually thinking of Kady. Is there something food-wise she always wanted while there but couldn't have because of the food allergies. I'd love to pick her up a mickey head rice krispy(s) or some of those mickey cookies, etc. If for no other reason than to celebrate her being able to have them.
do.

I asked Kady this morning if she would like anything from Disney that she couldnt eat the last few times. (remember she is home sick ) and she jumped up off the couch and said "I really want a rice krispy mickey head with the chocolate" But it is cute because she says chocolate but her "CH" sounds like a "SH" i love that. So if you could get her one, it would totally make her day!

Good morning!

Today is a looooooooooong day, followed by a very busy week. I have activities until 230 and then a meeting from 3-6. I'm supposed to be at a staff retreat by 7 but I'm going to head out in the morning instead; I'd really like to see my mom one last time before she leaves tomorrow.

Dinner will be during that meeting. DH is on his own.

How do you do this? I would be sleeping in my car:scared:

Gretchen- you are so sweet! Let me ask Marisa and I will get back to you. As long as you are conducting an experiment, have a Mickey bar for me....after a Dole float.

It is gloomy here too. I ran errands and cleaned an office that I do but ended up coming home before I got to the produce market because Kady did nto feel well. I think she is overtired. I wanted to grill a steak but it is rainy and while I would have handed Marisa an umbrella, I don't think I want to stand under one myself. We'll see.

Do you see that she would send me out in the rain, but not her.... Interesting  I love the Dole Floats

Funny story: I got up this morning and started cutting the potatoes for the frites on my mandolin. The mandolin has a feature that cuts the potatoes into that nice matchstick size that you (blurrily) see in the photo above. But, it is hard to slice potatoes while using the very essential hand guard. So, I was slicing the potatoes, sans hand guard this morning, while listening to the new Black Eyed Peas song, Boom Boom Pow. Imagine, if you will: Boom (slice) Boom (slice) Pow! (thumb slams into frite slicer). It was Boom Boom Ow! Always use the hand guard. :headache:

I unpacked our mandolin from a bin, and I didnt even want to wash it for fear I would lose a hand. Those things are DANGEROUS!!! I hope your hand is OK

Hi everyone. We survived our busy weekend, and I am trying to catch up here. Please forgive me if I miss someone.

I'll try to keep up this week, but it is a busy one...three baseball games (Liam's coach said Liam is going to pitch either tomorrow or Thursday...fingers crossed he does well! His team REALLY needs some decent pitching), four days of skating, two dance practices, a make-up gymnastics class, and two afternoons spent waiting to get tickets to the dance recitals. Things will settle down in a couple of weeks.

I have two nights a week that we are busy, and that is more than I can handle. I just dont know how you do it. You are so busy!!

Nancy- shhh, we used a walker too. Guess what, she turned out okay.

Nola does great in her walker. We had a child that went down the driveway in her walker, but her driveway had a slope. The baby went fast and into the road and under a car. Those things scare me outside. I think inside they are fine as long as the stairs are gated. Kady never had one but she was walking at 6 1/2 months!! :scared1:

I really think she was tired from the past two weeks. She told me she needs some snuggling :goodvibes With all that is going around it made no sense to send her to school if she was run down and needed one day to catch up. Besides.....Nana misses her ;)

I think Nana missing her was the motivation for her staying home today. For some reason Nana was pushing very hard for her to just stay home and rest...

Good morning! I haven't read back yet, but I wanted to say hi before the day got away from me.

We had a busy weekend. Doug and I went to the Horse Races on Saturday. What fun. I even won about $110.00. But of course that meant I had to buy dinner also. We had seafood. Oh my was it yummy!!

Yesterday we had church in the morning then cleaned house all day. Fun, fun. We had grilled Turkey burgers, salad and steamed broccoli for dinner. We are really trying to lose a few pounds before vacation. Plus we need to eat better. Already Doug has lot 5 pounds. Me - nothing. What is up with that?

I am on my own tonight as Doug has golf league. I have no idea what I will have. I hate cooking for myself. I might go get a 6" Subway roasted Chicken breast. Yea, that sounds good - dinner is set.

I will go read back now so I will check back in later. Make it a great day my friends.
