Cat 9 Upgrade to Veranda after booking -did you get one & what did you pay?

Hubby would love it. How did you get yours...at port or another time?

We booked a category 9 and chose our room for our cruise leaving next Saturday. At around 30 days we logged on and had been moved to a room with a balcony on deck 5. No rhyme or reason and we didn't do anything special, but we are thrilled with the upgrade.

We cruised about a month after 9/11. The ship was only about 2/3 full. We were in a cat 10 (Florida resident special). When we arrived at the port, I asked how much extra it was for an upgrade to a veranda room. They moved us to a cat 6 for only $350.00. Originally it would have cost over $1000. So it was a great savings. Depending on how full the ship is, you might be able to get a deal at the port.

We bought a Category 9 and we were upgraded about a month before our departure date to a Category 7 on Deck 6. We didn't request to be upgraded but it was a nice surprise!

Got upgraded to a cat 11 at first, then a cat 9.

Upgraded at the port to a cat 5 for about $800 (7 nite cruise)

All in all, we ended up paying about the same price for our cat 5 as it would have cost to reserve a cat 9 during low season (january). The weather was fabulous and we had a beautiful cabin...we were very pleased!

This was our first ever cruise and we booked a category 11. I had been checking online for a possible upgrade up until the night before we left on our cruise - no upgrade showing.

Got to the port and the CM asked, "Who do you know at Disney?". We looked at her puzzled, still not getting it (duh!), she then tells us we were upgraded to a category 5!

I started jumping up and down - too funny! I swear I was almost crying. My poor DH and DD just looked at me as if I were crazy .

We booked a 12, knowing we'd at least get an 11 (4 people per room) and were pixie dusted up to a cat 9.

However, I'm curious to hear the answer to your question - upgrading a 9 to a veranda for a fee, and how much that fee was.

If you upgrade after booking but before the port, you'll pay whatever it would have been to book the nicer category to begin with. If you upgrade at the port, you'll pay the discounted rate for an "at port" upgrade, and you'll pay from what you were assigned to what you buy.

For instance, if you booked a cat 12 and were assigned a 9....if you decide to move up to a balcony, you'll pay the rate from from the "outside stateroom" to the "verandah." (you were assigned an outside even though you booked an inside.) The upgrade rate is determined before each cruise. It depends on the length of the cruise, but is generally 1/3 to 1/2 off of what it would have cost to book the nicer cabin to begin with.

Put in dollars...on a 7 day, we upgraded from an inside to a window for $288. There was a balcony available, but it would have been $600. On a 4 day, we went from an inside to a balcony for $411. SO...inside to balcony was about $100 per day each time. It does not depend on the number of people sailing except that they obviously can't put 4 people in a 3 person cabin.

Did you just have one cabin? How fun that you ultimately upgraded to a 5! I would spend the $$ to upgrade at the port but we're traveling with friends and doubt they would upgrade. Since our daughter is staying in one of the cabins, we really would rather stay close to them than upgrade ourselves to a veranda.

Yes, we had just one cabin...when you ask about the upgrade, if one is available they can tell you where they are on the ship so maybe you can still be close to your friends even if you aren't right next to them...we were definitely glad we did it and would do it again in a heartbeat, though I think we got really lucky on this trip and may not have things fall into place as nicely another time with the DCL free upgrades and then the available cat 5's

I wonder if it depends on how full the ship is? Would they rather keep people together than spread about the ship?!?!

I have a inside cat 10 which I am extremely happy about would not mind a verandah (sp).

Actually, I think they spread us out so that each room steward may have one empty cabin rather than a couple stewards having not much to do or being reassigned. However, typically the stewards do a chunk of rooms near each other, so the same guy is doing cat 6 and cat 11.

Obviously, the availability of upgrades depends on how full the ship is! And how much they are willing to give away vs. how much they think they can sell at the port.

oh there is hope!!!! We are 42 days from sailing on the wonder with a cat 9, room 2114, but are traveling with parents and brother and family. We would be happy if 1 of us got upgraded!!! Not that I wouldnt be happy with my cat 9 but a 6 or 7 would be nice. I keep logging on every day hoping to see something is different. cat 9 11 and 12 are all gone so hopefully they need to clear out some rooms
