How does transferring work?

Let's say DH and I wanted just a 50-pt SSR contract to start with...

But my parents want to take the whole family (14 of us total) on a vacation to Disney.

Would it be possible to transfer into our acct. enough points to cover that?

Thinking if we bought this year, trip is next year.. we could bank/borrow to have 150 pts available..

Planning on bringing up the idea to my parents to stay at 2 of the treehouse villas, therefore we would need approx. 632 total points (482 points would need to be transferred into our acct. with our 150pts we'd have)

Does anyone ever have that many points to be transferred? (thinking it would be early/mid summer that we would be doing this transaction).

Also, do the transferred points need to come from somebody with an SSR contract to be able to book at 11 months out?

Thanks for any info!

You could also transfer once this year and once next year so you could get the 482 points in two transfers if you couldn't find someone with enough points to do one transfer.

Yes, they would all have to be SSR points if you wanted to book SSR at 11 months.

That would've worked, but we'll be traveling summer of 2010, so I'd need all the points by this summer to be able to make the reservation at 11 months out, :(

Thanks for the reply though!

Or can you make a ressie without having all the required points in your acct? Although I'd hate to do that with the *chance* that somebody would have the required points for us, with right resort.. and not be able to find that person next year.

Typically, you don't have to have the points in the account when you book your reservation, only when you travel.

However, in your case, since your contract does not have enough points to cover the trip, and you are relying on a transfer, they would have to be in the account at time of the reservation. MS can't book a reservation unless they see that there will be enough points by the time of the reservation is going to happen.

YOu can still get 2 transfers, as long as they are for seprate UYs.

Say, you get a transfer from someone of their Apr 09 UY SSR points. Those can then be banked for a summer 10 reservation.

You can also get a transfer of points from someone of their Feb 10 UY SSR points. Those points are good for the summer 10 reservation without banking.

You will not be able to do another trasnfer for your 09 UY or your 10 UY, as you are allowed only one transfer per UY. Best of luck -- Suzanne

Can someone transfer points before a UY starts? In order for the OP to book her trip in summer 2010, she would be making the reservation probably in August or September of 2009. I would assume that she would have to have the transferred points in her account by then.

Would someone with 2010 points be able to transfer them that early?

Yes. You can transfer points from your next year UY in advance. I've done it.

Ok, thanks for the replies all of you...

So if I'm reading this right, I could actually do 2 transfers this year, but one would need to come from somebody's next-year allotment, right?

I didn't think you could transfer banked/borrowed points though?

But if I did find someone to transfer enough to me this summer, I could bank all those points till next year?

Sure would make it a lot easier if dh would just agree to a bigger contract, :rotfl2:

So if I'm reading this right, I could actually do 2 transfers this year, but one would need to come from somebody's next-year allotment, right? Yes, from their current year points.

I didn't think you could transfer banked/borrowed points though? That is correct. See my prior answer.

But if I did find someone to transfer enough to me this summer, I could bank all those points till next year? Yes, you can bank points once they have been transferred to your account. I am staying in May 09 on points I received in a transfer in Sept 07, which were April 08 UY points. Without banking, they would have expired in Mar 09.

Sure would make it a lot easier if dh would just agree to a bigger contract, :rotfl2:

Food for thought.... tranferring 482 points would mean sending about $4,800 to a complete stranger, and trusting them to transfer the points to you. We have had points transferred, but only 10-20. I would send 1/2 the money, they would make the transfer, and then once the transfer was confirmed, I would send the other 1/2. But this was just dealing with $100-200. Not that I think someone would intentionally steal from you....but that's A LOT of money to be throwing around. That is what I would be slightly nervous about!

Yea, I had though that too.. would be horrible if something went wrong,

Had thought I could do it all through Paypal using a VISA.. that way I'd be protected (i would hope)...

Just thinking, if my parents decide that Disney's definitely the place they'd like to take us all to, I'd really love to stay at a DVC, instead of 4 separate little rooms.

Guess I'll just wait and see.. family's coming into town in couple wks.. we're gonna sit down all together, and hopefully figure out where we all would like to go.
