I have an upcoming - cannot say - reservation and we may have to cut it down and only stay some of the time. Is it better to list the reservation for rent or to rent the points?

Anyone?:thumbsup2

If you try to split the reservation into two reservations (one for 1 night, the second for 2 nights) what you are really doing is modifying the existing reservation and then creating a new one. Once the night(s) are freed up, they could go to the waiting list and you will not be able to rebook at the same resort or room type or may not get anything at all.

If you decide to risk it and are successful in booking a second reservation, I think you will find it difficult to rent it. There are not many people looking for a 2-night stay so you would be trying to someone who wants that resort, room type, dates and is happy with a very short stay. On the other hand, if you try to rent the points you are casting a wider net since you are not restricted by the dates, resort and room type. Trying to rent such a small number of points will limit what you can book however so again you will be looking for people who want a very short stay. If the points can be transferred you might be able to find someone who needs a small transfer to complete a reservation.

Also, in case you are not aware, the DVC Rent/Trade board here on the DIS does not allow existing reservations to be offered unless you are within 30 days of check in. If you rent or transfer points instead, there are no such restrictions.

went rent out a reservation (not points) make sure it is a popular time and if it does not rent - then make sure I can go then.

doesn't sound like you have that option. so would go for points, like Lisa suggested too.

renting out points allows the buyer to choose the dates they want, if available through MS.

I am confused but that is why I read these boards daily.

If I am not a DVC owner, then I assume that the owner needs to secure my reservation.

If I am a DVC owner, then I thought there were strict limits and procedures on point transfers.

If someone is a DVC owner and rents points, will someone please explain "renting" versus "transferring" points?

Thanks

"Transfers" are limited to once (in or out but not both) per use year. However, a "transfer" exists if, and only if, one member physically transfers points from his account to another member's account. If you use your points to make a reservation in another's name that is not actually a "transfer" of points (even though many may refer to it as such), and thus many rent by using their points to make a reservation in the renter's name and they can do that multiple times a year.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but I am still fuzzy on rent vs transfer.

Reading the rent/trade forum, I see deals for about to expire extremely odd lot points for $5 to $9 per point. Can you use or combine these odd lot points into a bigger existing reservation?

Say I am a DVC owner and have a reservation for April using 2009 points and someone has a few (less than 1 day rental) expiring 2008 points for rent at a great price. Is there anyway to use (rent) these points without transferring them into my account

If you rent points, the DVC owner renting the points controls the reservation. If you get points transfered into your account, you make and control your reservation. Like the pp stated, you only get 1 transfer in or out per UY. If you are a DVC owner and currently have a reservation and wish to upgrade to more nights or a larger accomodation, you would have to recieve a transfer to do this. Renting points would only make sense if you rented the entire amount for your reservation. But then remember, you will not have the total control of your reservation. I hope this helps.

My understanding is that you can only use points in this situation through transfer. To do a rental, it would have to be enough points for one day and a separate reservation would need to be made by the member renting out the points.

"Renting" points is a bit of a misnomer since DVC points can only be used by the member who controls the contract in which the points are held.

The points you see offered which are due to expire are usually points that have already been banked. These cannot be transferred to another member and can only be used to make a reservation. If the number of these points is enough for a single night, that member could make a reservation in your name and then link that reservation to your existing reservation thru MS. You would not need to move during that stay. If they have stranded points, but not enough to reserve a single day, the only options are for them to use other points from their account (either current or borrowed) to have enough for the single night ... OR ... to have points transferred into their account to complete the reservation (IMO, that becomes too cumbersome since it would be better to deal with the member who has enough points available for what you really need in the first place instead of depending on all of these puzzles pieces fitting together).

The reason some of those points are at a "great price" is that they have some severe limitations and are distressed points with little value to anyone without extra planning or assistance.

I guess there would be two scenarios that would prompt someone to sell a vacation (or reservation). First... If I secured a highly cherished time period with the intention of selling the vacation. Second, if I had a reservation already and could not keep the date. I would both try to sell the reservation and at the same time advertise points for rent.

Basically, if you have a highly desirable reservation it will get you considerably more $ than to rent open points.

Technically, neither selling a Vac. or renting points is allowed. For what that is worth.

I learn something new everyday. Renting points is allowed? Is the 20X rule of thumb spelled out too? Or is there some other limitation?

No, the 20x rule is not spelled out. There is some vague language against renting for commercial gain.

Basically Disney/DVC can define commercial renting any way they want, but their definition would need to be reasonable enough to stand up if a commercial renter would challenge them in court.
