Silly question re weddings

OK this is probably really silly but I am going to a wedding in April and I'm confused. The wedding is in England and I'm from Scotland and my MIL is telling me that after the wedding and meal we will go back to our hotel and get changed into something more casual for the dance. This doesn't happen in Scotland so I'm wondering if this is the norm in England or is MIL just being her usual awkward self and not wanting to stay dressed up so she is telling us all that we need to get changed. I just assumed that I would have the one wedding outfit and that was fine but I also don't want to be the only 1 that doesn't get changed if thats what usually happens.

No if you go to the day reception then you would wear the same all day/night. Remember - not everyone will be staying over with the option to nip and get changed so they will just be wearing the same thing all day.

If you WANTED to get changed that's fine too. We won't burn you at the stake!

It honestly does'nt matter.I have been to a wedding where we did'nt stay overnight in the hotel+stayed in the same clothes for the evening reception-just freshned up.(i was'nt going to lug a change of clothes around with me).
Also been to a wedding where we stayed overnight+i did take a change of clothes-as i knew others did who were also staying overnight-just as well i did Dd who was only 6months at the time-sicked up all over me half way thru the very 'posh' meal .x.

You can do either, stay in the same clothes or get changed, people do both.

we had our reception at a hotel and the guests that had rooms got changed, not everybody did though.....personally if ive got an outfit i like then im going to wear it as long as possible

Thanks everyone didn't want to completely ignorant and not have a clue what was happening.
I have never heard of anyone getting changed for the dance up here.

Thats what I thought. I may bring another top and trousers just in case.

Do the guests that are only going to the night do come dressed smart or casual?. Here where I live evn if only going to the dance you get dressed up and the men wear their kilts

You would never guess hubby was english, I asked him and he said "dunno don't think I've been to a wedding down there since I was a kid" not much help. He's lived up here for 20 years now

Personally if i was only invited to the evening reception+not the actual wedding,i would still go in formal dress(as if i was attending the wedding)but without a hat if hats were intended to be worn at the wedding-hope that makes sense.
As for your hubby-if he wants to wear his kilt-then why not.But if he wanted to wear a suit+tie then that would also be acceptable-still smart/formal wear.x.

I agree with Debenhams-although i got married 8years ago this year-i got an Anna Sholtz designer outfit for my evening reception for just under £150 .x.

Thanks was looking on debenhams site yesterday and they seemed to have nice dresses, just got to get to the shop to try them all on now.
