One last drinking question

Hi,

I am planning on a Disney cruise soon. I am going with my 19 and 20 year old kids. I know they will be able to drink in Nassau. I really don't have a problem with them drinking a little on the ship, as they know when to stop and are responsible about it all.

I would like to know:
-Are their id cards marked (either physically or in the computer) that they are not 21, so there's no chance they will be served alcohol?
-Will they be served if they "look" old/mature?

Their cards will be marked. They will not be able to buy alcohol. I guess it doesn't prevent YOU from buying booze for them, not sure what Disney would do if they saw that. The drinking age on board is 21.

Disney and DCL is VERY strict about whom they serve. A server will lose their job, risk a fine and up to 60 days imprisonment and the inability to work at a job where they would have to sell or serve alcohol for a minimum of 5 years.

Please don't risk a cast members job or future.

You are correct, Disney's policy is age 21.

I did a quick Google search, and to the best of my knowledge, there is no minimum drinking age in international waters, it is entirely at the discretion of the Captain or the cruise line. Most cruise lines stick with 21.

I do know on my first cruise, on the MS Memoz, a French ship run by Paquet cruising out of Miami with 98% of the passengers being from France, there was no drinking age at sea.
Of course, I should note wine was included at no extra cost at lunch and dinner. There were open bottles on every table.

Princess Cruise Lines also holds to the 21. I'm not sure if there is an actual "at sea" legal age.

DCL's policy is 21. Carnival's policy is also 21. Royal Caribbean's policy is also 21, unless sailing out of Europe or South America then guests 18-20 may order alcohol with a parent signed waiver on file.

Sailings out of the US the age is 21.

I do not think that sailing out of the US has any thing to do with it since the ship is of foreign registry. This is a DCL policy. Look at the fact that you have to be 21 in the US to gamble but on a cruise ship you only have to be 18.

Gambling is illegal in California, except at casinos on soveriegn land (translation, Indian casinos). The gambling age at Indian Casinos that serve alcohol is 21.
The gambling age at Indian Casinos that do not serve alcohol is 18.

Just a quick story...my niece was with us on a family reunion cruise and she is a VERY responsible 20 YO. Her DM was with her and bought her a drink (even carried it over to another location) and a CM came over and asked for both of their cards, then he said he would need for them to report to their rooms for the night and someone from guest services would be in touch.

They both spent a good hour sweating in the room and GS came down and asked if they knew the drinking age on the ship was 21...they said yes. They were asked to stay in the room for the rest of the evening (this was about 11pm so no biggie) and were told that if she drank onboard again they would be asked to leave the ship.

They, obviously, did not risk it again and said that the CM was really nice about it, but got a letter the next morning reiterating the policy. They take is VERY seriously and I would (personally) not want to risk being asked to leave the ship or be stuck in my room for the cruise.

Just not worth the risk IMO.

I stand corrected. You can buy lottery tickets at 18 in California. But you still can't drink, to bring it back on topic.

I know! I got a kick out of that too and thought "they sent you to your rooms with out supper!" That is what DM always threatened but never did!! Funny thing was my sister-in-law (who is in her 40s) was more scared than my neice who was trying to console her and let her know it would be ok. Apparently the escorted them to their rooms.

Even on the European cruises the drinking age aboard ship was a strict 21.
