Aaaaaaagh Nits!

DD6 has got nits again. It's a real problem in her class - I'm sure there must be at least one parent that doesn't check or treat their child for them because there always seems to be someone who has them.

What do you recommend? I apply a solution - she has one on now that has to be washed out in the morning and then reapplied in 7 days and it absolutely reeks of liquorice. Some people have said tea tree conditioner, leave it on and then comb through with a nit comb is the best way to treat and keep them at bay. I'm hoping someone has a good tip to prevent her getting them at all but I've just googled nits and it says they don't care if hair is long,short,dirty,clean,loose or tied up, hair is hair and they'll set up home in it whatever the length or condition.

There is nit repellants on the market but I dont know if they work. I have heard Tea Tree oil is good.

To treat you just need to get rid - if you just smother her hair in conditioner and take the comb through they will come out. Tie here hair up it should help.

TBO I would contact the school and tell them your concerns - they may issue a letter or such like. Letters go out at our school when 2 parents report nits

Yes this is true! the little blighters will make their home anywhere! Our kids had this problem in primary school, i know it's a pain

Try Lyclear liquid to get rid, then use any conditioner to run the comb through the hair, making sure you get right next to the scalp and comb in thin sections. Use lyclear spray on repellent before returning to school (every morning) and make sure you teach your child to comb (not brush) their hair as soon as they come home from school/out playing or anywhere they go including clubs etc Cannot guarantee that he/she won't catch it again but i found this to be the best solution, Lyclear is made from natural ingredients and does not use any chemicals, this is part of the recurring problem, Lice can get immune to the chemicals used in older types of solutions/shampoos.

My sympathies, when Vicki was little, she had them year after year, it improved no end when she went to high school for some reason, I put it down to having individual desks and the heads not so close together as they are in infants and Juniors.

I tried all the usual lotions on the market and from the chemist but to no avail, until I discovered a product called Chinese Whispers, I got the shanpoo and spray lotion at the health shop and it worked like a miracle on her. I used the shampoo first, then loads of conditioner, combed them all out, then added the spray lotion, it drys quickly with no particular smell. Every morning I would spray the lotion on her dry hair(you couldnt tell) comb it through and then repeat the wash process 3 times a week.

I agree ~ I did this twice a week without fail when mine were at infant/junior school and if they'd picked up a 'friend' on the way it meant it got rid of it before it caused too much havoc.

Luckily, we haven't had them yet Eldest DD is in Year 1. Every time I wash the girls hair (about every other day) I comb the conditioner through and I think this is the best prevention.

Worked wonder's on our eldest's hair,also invest in tea tree shampoo and condition for normal washing.

Hot wash all bedding/pillows so on too! they are little blighters,

Agree with Beth__WDW23/6/02,when our dd was at school we would just get it cleared and then she would have them again. we used Tea Tree shampoo and conditioner ,once we got them cleared up , and seemed to work for us.
In our school , they automatically send letters home once they know someone has them, no need for parents to contact school for this to happen.

i put a few drops of neat tree tree oil in with her no more tears de tangle spray and use it every day and she has never had them since.

My girls have not had them yet but they've been in school numerous times.

Every so oftern I wash their hair in tee tree oil as I've heard that the nits can't stand the smell.

I must admit everytime there's a breakout we get a letter from school.

We have never had them but I was recommended 2 drops of geranium oil in hair conditioner, combed through the hair and have done this everytime the boys come home with letters, the only thing is it has quite an earthy smell but it's not offensive at all.

On the same note a couple of years ago I was behind a very nicely dressed lady and man in a long queue in wilkinsons, as I stood there thinking I thought my eyes were playing tricks as it looked like the ladies hair was moving!!! taking a closer look her whole hair was moving, and she had nits the size of ants crawling along her hair and neck - I felt so ill, but my feet were rooted to the spot, the minute I got home I showered and washed my hair it made me feel awful. I really did not know that they could grown that big - and did she really not feel them

Can you get a child friendly tea tree shampoo and conditioner? My girls are really sensitive with products going in their eyes, but I would like to give this remedy a try - can you recommend a particular brand, Beth?

that is awful isn't it!! especially as she was with someone!!

I have 3 girls and at their first primary school they had them ALL the time!! I found that doing their hair 3 times a week controlled them. It wasn't until they swopped schools that they stopped getting them. It seems likely that just a few children are responsible!

I've just finished a long-term primary school placement with my agency and a few kids in one of the reception classes have them as well as the teacher, maybe I had a lucky escape?! This thread is making me feel itchy though

It is not recommended to use chemicals on the scalp - my DD used to get them at primary school and I would comb them out with hair conditioner.

A recommendation is to use straightners through the hair as this fries the eggs and will stop them coming back.

Oh what fun it is when kids get nits. The only good thing is that they only go on clean hair.

Apparently the NITS are about in DS school, letters were sent out today I have felt itchy since being told have checked him and combed conditioner through his hair and fingers crossed he doesnt catch them
