For those who need meds for sea sickness, which is your preference?

Band? Pill? Natural? Patch?

I have a real problem with seasickness and motion sickness in generall and have tried many things. I've found the 24 hour chewable Bonine tablets work the best for me. :thumbsup2

No it has not affected me like that, which is one of the reasons I like it so much. Drammamine just knocks me out.

That is good to know. I will have to try it before we leave to see how it affects me.

Dramamine makes me stupid!! :rotfl2: I get light-headed, I need sleep, I cannot make a complete sentence or thought and I cannot last more than 4 hours after I have taken it.

What you want to get is Meclazine. It is the active ingredient in Bonine. Walgreens and CVS sell generic versions with meclazine. Meclazine is the non drowsy version. Also, you want to start taking it before you get on the ship. Once you start feeling sea sick it takes longer for the pills to take effect and make you feel better.

And please forgive my typo in the title. How embarassing. :crazy2:

I've looked and looked at your title, where is the typo? I've used them all and find that the pill and the patch to be most effective. ginger NO! the bands NO! and those electric shock bands NO! Meclizine does work and is non drowsy.
the important thing is to keep up with the medication. Don't wait to "start to feel sick before taking it. take it as prescribed whether you feel sick or not.

My family swears by ginger capsules from the health food store. They really work and have NO side effects. They also help with digestion which is good on a cruise!

I saw an episode of Mythbusters and they determined ginger was the best as well.

Enjoy your cruise!

Meclazine is available on deck 1 at the Nurse's station for free. There are packs out there and my husband always starts his cruise off picking up a few.
We have found that the pills work the best. I tried the patch on our first cruise and had terrible side effects for a few days after removing it.
We had one terrible Disney cruise out of six when we all experienced sea sickness for an entire night. It was Thanksgiving week 2005. The were a lot of hurricanes that season and the waters were rough!! But, by day two we were fine...just kept up with the meclazine.

Another vote for Bonine/Meclazine. I started taking it the night before our cruise and gradually weaned myself off of it by the middle of the cruise. The first night of the cruise was a little rough - someone said it was because we were crossing the Gulf Stream on our Western Carib cruise. I was fine and our friends were fine, but dh left dinner early to go lay down. He was not taking anything, but he was fine after that first night.

sorry niciggy, I won't cruise without my "shock band" again :upsidedow the drugs make me stupid and the patch makes my eyes blurry. I tried to go without my band for a few hours. Not a good idea. Within 10 minutes of putting it back on, I felt fine. I never felt shocked but I could feel a mild... something that wasn't uncomfortable at all.

Yeah, definitely Bonine/Meclizine (which is the same as Non-Drowsy Dramamine). Regular Dramimine completely ruins me for the rest of the day.

I went to the store tonight and bought ginger caps and Bonine. I will try both. I cruise in May, so I have plenty of time. Considering that I get car sick easy, I will have plenty of opportunity to try them out.

I am a bit concerned about the patch considering that I have reactions to all medication and am sensitive to a lot of meds. I cannot do Dramamine, so Bonine may not work either.

Call your doctor before taking ginger. It has potentially fatall side effects for people with certain health conditions or on certain medications. Consumer Reports about 2 years ago did a story on this.
It probably has no side effects for many people, but as always, check with you doctor before
You have to be careful with interactions and health issues. I can't eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice because it can cause fatal side effects with the blood pressure medicine I take.

I start taking Bonine the day before we board the ship...or the day we start in the parks before the cruise. I take one in the morning and although I am a lightweight with other meds and sometimes can't get through one glass of wine I am not affected by the Bonine. I can't watch the tea cup ride going around if I have not taken the Bonine but can ride it without feeling nauseous if I have taken it. I also continue taking it for 3-4 days after the cruise and it keeps me from experiencing the swaying some deal with getting their land legs back.

I take Motion Mate -I can't rember the company -Nature's Way? Anyhow, they make a lot of different ones but this is the best. I can only find it online now. It is a yellow bottle. I have a lot of medical problems and this works with very few side effects (make sure you swallow with a lot of water). It is made from ginger, peppermint and a few other herbs. When I travel I also try to have ginger cookies and peppermints. Also, make sure you are hydrated. I was told to drink lots of water the day before traveling so your body is completely hydrated. Then I drink more when I get to my destination -I limit it right before traveling to avoid rest stops!
