What are my options... injury involved

OKay, I rented some points out to my friends and they are supposed to leave Friday. Their DS12 got hurt this past weekend snowboarding. He now has a broken arm and I beleive a broken disc or fractured disc in his spine. They do not know if they want to cancel as of last night when they called me.

What are my options if they want to cancel and re-schedule? I've never had to do it so close to arrival date. I feel really bad for them but can't afford to refund them or lose the points if I did. They chose not to get the insurance either.

They might still go, they were talking about it last night. Besides DS12, they also have DS4 and DS6. They made such a big deal about it and saved it to tell them on Christmas and Mickey called to say he would see them soon and all that. They don't think the younger two could stand to wait any longer.

I feel so bad for them !! I will call MS this morning to see what I can do. I'm sure you will all have answers for me first though so.....

If they want to change the date and go in 6 weeks or so, what are the odds I could get them a 2 bed somewhere. It was 189 points for them from Frid to Wed. at SSR.

Well, first of all, I hope he is feeling better soon!

I'm sure you already know your points will go into "holding" status when they are cancelled, and will only be good for booking 60 days or less from the time you wish to travel. If they can re-schedule now, you could probably book them something for 6 weeks from now as long as there is something available. Just remember that will be in a higher point time than this one though. It will cost them and you more points.

Also when is your UY as the points have to be used by then. We ahd to cencel in Decmebr the day before we were due to arrive, when I got kidney stones! As our UY is March we had to go before the end of Feb.

Hope it all works out for your friends.

Claire ;)

How much flexibility you have is going to depend partly on how flexible their travel plans can be, and partly on your Use Year.

If they are flexible about travel dates, you can probably get something for them, although as Diane said, it may cost them a little more. But costing a little more is much better for both of you than them losing their money altogether. This is a perfect example of why trip insurance is often a great idea for folks renting a DVC ressie.

If they are not very flexible, then you may run into UY problems. Ideally, you want to use the points in holding for their vacation (or swap them for one of your own, if possible). If you can't do that, then you will have to book something further in advance than 60 days using regular points. That, of course, will leave you with 189 points still in holding that are "use or lose" for this UY because they can't be banked. If you have to borrow points, it gets even uglier.

The other question is their son's injury. Depending on the exact nature of the arm fracture, healing could be pretty rapid for that injury.

The spinal injury is a very different situation. He might have rapid recovery from that, or recovery may take a very extended period...much longer than 6 weeks. Hopefully, the Ski Patrol folks protected his spine following the injury, and the injury was not too serious.

injury was not too serious. We have really good people working on the mountain (I work there too) and even have some specialists that work and a place to land for patients to be airlifted out if required. I was told that he isn't allowed to go on anything bumpy or fast.

That's the real key in any trauma situation. The injury is what it is, but you can make it a LOT worse if you don't keep your wits and take normal, basic precautions.

Often spinal injuries don't present any symptoms at all initially. The real difficulty is that doctors can fix a broken arm, but they can't fix an aggravated spinal injury. Inexperienced people (even very well-trained inexperienced people) often haven't had enough "reps" to do the basic things automatically. Pros do the basics without thinking about them. Sounds like you have pros, which is pretty typical of Ski Patrol just about everywhere. I'm glad his injury wasn't serious.

Hopefully, your renters can use your points, either as scheduled or rescheduled, which would be better all around for everyone. If things are bad enough that they have to reschedule, and it will be several months away, things could get difficult. I always tell my renters that I will gladly reschedule their trips if they have something happen, but I don't give refunds on the points. Hopefully, you have a August or October use year, so you have plenty of time to reschedule their trip, if necessary. Hopefully, they will go on their trip anyway. If they are from the north, Florida would certainly be a nice place to recouperate(and warmer than home). I wish you luck on this, especially if you have a February use year!
