My DD, DS and DS's fiancee are taking the Amtrak from Harrisburg, Pa to Phila, then onto Kissimmee. I think it's about a 20 hour ride. It's not the auto train, so I'm wondering if it makes stops all along the way. Does anyone have any experience with this? My DD and DS are looking forward to the adventure, but the fiancee is not crazy about the idea. Any experiences to share? Thanks.

About twenty or so stops between Pennsylvania and central Florida, but of course that is allowed for in the schedule - you wouldn't get there any faster if the train didn't make those stops. Coach or first-class (sleeper) are very different experiences, but both will be enjoyable, relaxing modes of travel (don't let the fiancee convince herself she isn't going to enjoy the trip, before she even gets on board).

Suggest to them they eat at least a couple meals in the dining car, where the food is generally very good to excellent, and not just the lounge car''s "sandwiches, snacks, and beverages". Delays can sometimes occur, but before anyone tries to tell you different, the latest the train has arrived in the last month is 48 minutes - and the train has been early at Orlando 14 of the past 30 days.

Our last 15 or so trips have been on Amtrak, we used to do the northeast Ohio to Philly run until they closed our station here in Ohio, so we have to drive an hour to the next closest station and that train runs into DC. No matter, we're headed south after DC, and we have done the whole trip in coach, huge room around the pair of seats, they recline, leg and foot rests makes relaxing a breeze. Bring blankets since the temps at night get really cool, sometimes during the day it's chilly too. We bring a small cooler, sandwiches, snacks and drinks but as stated above, the dining car has excellent food, club car isn't bad either, both kind of pricey but it's vacation.

We've done the roomette (sleeper) from DC to Kissimmee alot, bought once on board and meals were included. Buying a sleeper before hand can get expensive but we only need a room for 2 so we ask after we pull out of DC, if any are available you get a discounted rate but you play the odds of nothing being available. It's happened to us a couple of times out of 12-15 trips but it's worth it to us. The sleeper gives you the comfort lying down to sleep, no noise or disturbances of others, toilet and of course the meals. We're headed down again this January, 23rd, and Amtraking it all the way.

Are there outlets on the train? I would like to be able to plug in our portable DVD player.

Our experiences seem to be what kind of train car and on which train? We've seen 1 outlet to a car and one at every pair of seats. Really don't know who has them and what you may encounter. When we board they place us in a car that's all headed to a certain stop, car may or may not have outlets all over. More often then not, we've encountered cars with one in them.

My daughter and I went from Baltimore in 2005 and we had a blast. As someone already said, the stops are scheduled within the timeframe of the trip and they are usually pretty quick stops. We just slept in our seats - we did take a lightweight cover with us and our own pillows which we then just strapped onto the top of our pulley luggage when we took our transportation to the resort. It was a nice adventure for us. Dining car food was good - we like to sit there and play cards and watch the scenery. We took ipods and small electronic travel games too.
