Budget Activities for me and my DH

Me and my DH are still very young (in our 20s) and don't have any kids. We go out on the weekends but during the week we usually just plop in front of the TV for hours. I don't think this is doing any good for us intellectually or for our relationship. Sometimes we have played games ... in particular Uno and Chess. But what are some budget activities that we can do to avoid watching TV all night? What are some fun games for two people?

Any suggestions are appreciated :goodvibes :)

We play scrabble, trivia pursuit, yahtzee. I love Sorry. We cook together too. How about an evening walk? or bike ride?

Personally I like the cooking idea, even if that means taking some cooking classes together, that is still time you're doing together and then once you're cooking more often at home, that will help you save some money and you'll also learn more about each others tastes, likes and dislikes. It can turn your meals into an event or an evening long experience almost like a European meal and maybe then you'll be more open to inviting friends over for meals where you can hopefully save some money as opposed to going out all the time.

Just a random thought and probably not the full thought.

museums, parks, art galleries, we do wekend trips to the mountains or beach. We camp so it's very economical and we have some time "away" from life.

Sorry, realized your question was about fun games :goodvibes .

DH has a 360 and we've been known to have some lego star wars or lego indy jones marathons.
We love scrabble so we sometimes do that as well.

I know you said for 2 people but what also about inviting some friends over? You can watch a rented movie or play games?

Dh and I play card games and we like to play games on the computer like monopoly and family feud (easier clean up, lol).

I'm interested in what other ideas for entertainment others come up with, we get in the "watching tv" rut alot, too.

My hubby and I are both 35 and we have been married for ten years. we online game together, playing World of Warcraft, Diablo2, Perfect world, etc. We love it and have made many real life and online friends. When one of us travels we can still play together and we miss each other less. Try perfect world- it is a free download and it is free to play!

We, too, are a young(ish) couple with no kids and here's what we do:First, we got rid of the satellite subs. to keep us from doing the TV thing. We were like you, we felt like our brains were melting. We just get basic TV over the air, but we supplement with Netflix. In place of TV, here are our ideas:

1. Board/Card games: Some of our favorites are: Ticket to Ride, Cranium (figured out how to modify the rules to play w/ just two people), Monopoly, Scattergories, Yahtzee, Pass the Pigs, Killer Bunnies, Risk, Rummikub, Last Word, Pictureka, Scene It (almost any variety), Uno, Skip Bo, Sorry, Magic Kingdom Game, Mad Gab, Life (old or new version), Boggle, Scrabble, Upwords, Trivial Pursuit.

2. Jigsaw puzzles. We tend to get the big ones (1,000 pieces or more) and work on them for days.

(This is a great time of year to get games or puzzles b/c so many retailers are having sales. We usually add a few to our repertoire this time each year.)

3. Playstation: We still have our playstation 2 and we have several games that we both like to play together, as well as some we play on our own. We are, however, saving for a Wii and some games as this looks like something we would really both enjoy. I figure we'll have enough for what we want by March or so and maybe they'll be in stock by then.

4. DH is a big PC gamer and I like to read, so when we want time on our own, this is what we turn to.

5. We do a lot of free things in town like museums, free concerts, etc. In summer, we just sit outside on the deck and talk or listen to music or take walks or bike rides.

6. We like to do some other things like bowling that are somewhat budget, but still cost.

7. We take the money we save from not paying for satellite and not going to te movies, etc. and toss it into the travel fund and take several low cost trips each year (not really budget, but fun and made possible by doing other low cost things through out the year)

Hope this helps!

We have kids, but I'm budget concious, LOL. Some things we do over the summer when the kids are out of school:

bike rides
roller blading / roller skating
star gazing (we put the patio chair cushions on the lawn and try to find the constellations)
canoe rides
sunset trips to the beach
library
bowling
scrapbooking (yes, my DH scrapbooks w/me)
pizza and movie night - make your own pizza - get creative

And things others have mentioned - play Scrabble, Phase 10, join a gym, learn to cook, etc. My DH has decided he wants to learn to paint so he's been renting books and videos that teach watercolor painting. Are there any things you want to learn? Painting, drawing, learn an instrument, photography, etc. Check your local county listings for low cost classes. Learn a craft and give everyone homemade presents next Christmas (my DH also makes jewelry with our DD).

Do you own a house? Are there projects that need to be done? Are your finances in order? If not, now is the time to set a budget, write wills, etc. - get all that taken care of before you have kids. Anything you may want to do - do it now! As my Mom says - once a parent, always a parent!

My husband and I are in a similar situation as you are.
We enjoy anything that says FREE!!! We have bike trails that about about 25 minutes from our house, and it's a central location with some of our friends, We will meet them there and ride our bikes for a couple hours at night. Not only are we getting TONS of exercise b/c we ride at least 10 miles, by the time we get home, it's shower and bed, so we are always in a much better mood the next day compared to when we don't go riding. The trails are really nice, they run through woods, and down my the river. It's part of the cities clean up plan. If you have a local city website, look on their I'm sure they will have several different activites they have.
We also have a springer spaniel who doesn't think she walks on 4 legs but 2 lol! We love doing things with her, whether playing outside, or going walking. She was an engagement gift, but you can also adopt from a local shelter, I know our shelter is $40 to adopt a dog, and they ofter have puppies.
Another we enjoy in the warmer months is yard work/house work. We are always doing something to spruse up our house, although my husband bought it and he and his brother gutted it and re-built the inside, but there are still a couple things they never finished.
That's all I can thinkg of right now. I'll come back if I think of anything else!!!

I think sponsoring a dog would be a great project to do together. Especially an undersocialized one. Our rescue has many couples who foster our puppy mill rescues and come to events together and take the pup out or work on lessons at home to help the dog become adjusted to normal life. Plus its doing a great thing! And so many rescues/shelters are BEGGING people to do this!

Some games my DH and I have always enjoyed together are Rummikub (which is on sale at Target - $10 I think) and Sequence (probably our favorite, it is a faster moving game). There are also some other games by the Sequence maker that are all good.

Yes, we do own our house. Fortunately for us, it is pretty project-free. We do need to paint one of the rooms though. :)

Thanks for all your suggestions! I think your Mom is absolutely right! ;)

What great ideas! And it is good to hear that there are a few people out there that can relate to the TV rut. (That makes me feel better!)

We went for a walk tonight and it was a lot of fun! It is actually warm outside right now here (I live in Alabama :)) so I really enjoyed it.

I'm going to look into a lot of the games you guys mentioned.

Unfortunately, where I live there aren't many free things to do. But I will keep an eye out!

I don't think we are quite ready for a dog yet, but that is interesting about sponsoring one. I will have to see if any of the shelters here offer that.

I've never tried online gaming. I will put that on the list~!!

Thanks again everyone! :goodvibes :goodvibes You've all given me great ideas! I knew I could count on yall! :cool1:

DH and I have been together 12 years, and every night we go for a walk after dinner.

We also play cards together everynight. Rummy and Poker. Yes, EVERY NIGHT. lol
We have fun with it though.
We also enjoy doing our own personal interests together...he likes Video games, i will pick one up with him like wii sports.
or he will work on a scrapbook page with me.

Okay, so my idea can be a little pricey to start up but is tons of fun and the start up costs (and gas) are really your only expenses.

Go Geocaching...

It's like treasure hunting. You plug coordinates into a hand held GPS (DBF and I like the Garmin eTrex Handheld GPS) and then follow it to a general area, and then you search... Sometimes the caches are small (like a film canister) but we've found some that were rather large Tupperware as well. The idea is you sign the log (swap a "prize" if you wish) and then head off to find another cache... It's loads of fun, gets you outside and moving, and it is really great when you find hidden treasures together.

On a similar vein, how about letterboxing. Similar to geocaching, except you don't need a gps. It is really like a treasure hunt. Where you get clues to find the letterbox.

Another idea is volunteering together. There is a great need for volunteers in all kinds of places.

I was just about to suggest the same thing. Geocaching is tons of fun and can be done at very little expense.

You will need a GPS, but a basic GPS can be had for a song. Used and refurbished Garmin models can be found on ebay for between $30 and $50. More expensive GPSs come with features that are useful, but not necessary.
