This just in!

A suburban mother was found guilty today of lesser misdemeanor charges for her role in an online hoax that prosecutors said led to the suicide of her teenage neighbor.

Lori Drew was convicted of three misdemeanor charges for her role in an online hoax that allegedly led 13-year-old Megan Meier to commit suicide.
Lori Drew, 49, was convicted on three misdemeanor counts of unauthorized access to computers in a case that drew nationwide attention both for its novel use of a computer hacking law to combat alleged cyberbullying and for its tales of suburban neighborhood rivalries and teenage suicide.

The jury could not reach a verdict on a single felony conspiracy charge. Drew, who lives in a suburb of St. Louis, was acquitted of several felony counts of unauthorized access to computers to inflict emotional distress on 13-year-old Megan Meier.

Drew faces a possible sentence ranging from probation to three years in prison for the misdemeanor charges. She could have faced up to 20 years in prison if convicted of the felony charges.

I do feel this lady, Lori Drew is responsible, I also feel like her assistant was like wise responsible, as well as her dd, but I do understand the dd being a minor, she didn't know what she was doing maybe, but her assistant I feel, knew full well what she was doing and like wise should have been charged.

This was a very sad case, and I followed it here and there from the beginning, my heart goes out to the Meier family.

It was a slap on the wrist IMO

Agreed, though (apparently) technically, it was the legally-correct call to make. Not that I agree with it in the slightest; it's just that my BF is an attorney and after arguing with him about it long and hard the other night (when they were thinking they might dismiss the case altogether), I can sort of see what he means. It still pisses me right off, though. What a horrible woman. What kind of person actually thinks that it's acceptable to do something like this to a CHILD?! She was a 13 yo girl herself once; does she not recall how much other BS girls that age are already going through without also being bullied by grown women?

There are so many other things I'd like to say about her, but I don't need the points.

Definitely agreed. I can't believe this "grown up" thought her actions were okay. I just hope that little girl is at peace, where ever she is.

I wonder if she has any remorse about what happend to the teenager who commited suicide. I can't believe anyone would do this to a child. It's really sad she still has her daugher and the family that lost their daughter all they have is memories and the how they lost their daughter. I don't know about anyone else but when I saw her walking out of the courthouse with her head held high it made me sick. I would of been hiding with a coat over my head. She may of not been found guilty but she will have to live with having a part in making this child loose her life. Okay I am done. I am getting off my soapbox.

Is it me....or has she never really seemed remorseful for this at all??? I've seen a few things over the year about it...and she just sort of seems like 'shrug.......not my fault'.

I believe the law has been now been changed so that if something like this happens again they can go after the criminal more forcefully. What she did was horrible.

That is how I saw her behavior, also. It's like she still thinks it was a joke...and we are the wierd ones for not getting that.:sad2:

She needs to be in jail.

What kind of mother would ever do something like that? :sad2:

:sad2:
That woman is despicable. She was a 13 year old once, she should KNOW how girls at that age can teeter-totter with their emotions. Especially when a teenage girl has depression, WHAT was she thinking?

Her punishment isn't nearly enough, but again, it isn't a murder trial.

I agree she got off easy.
I hope she's ostracized by society for the rest of her miserable life.

I don't think she will serve prison time. She will probably get probation and some kind of computer ban.

Not to start up another topic or debate.....but as my child is getting older...I am seeing more and more of this. parents that want to be their kids friends and act like one of their friends. My neighbor is involved in every aspect of her teenage daughters life....from helping her with what to say on IM's with boys....getting involved with all the gossip of the teenage kids (and helping to spread the gossip).....to telling her what to wear to "impress the boys"....etc etc etc
the mother so wants to be cool and "in." She keeps telling me that I will understand when my DD9 is a teenager.....God, I hope I'm not like that!!!!
So in a weird way......I betcha that is what happened with this sick woman....she got so caught up in trying to be her daughters friend....and not a parent.....and just took it to another level!!

I'm a firm believer in karma and the way the universe tends to even things up. I can't wait to hear about whatever payback life has to offer her in the future.

I agree with some of the previous posters. I don't think this woman has ever been remorseful. She said it was not her fault. It was her fault, along with a few other people. I am sorry this young girl could not reach out for help.
I, too, believe in karma. It will come back to this woman. I just hope it is not her DD that has to pay for it.
