Which is the very cheapest resort that is a hotel? Is it cheaper still to go offsite? (bear in mind car hire & parking & fuel, or taxi fair to park each day)?

Any of the Values and POP are the most inexpensive on site. I don't think it's worth it to stay off site. Everyone has a different stand on this but that's how I think. They even have GP discounts now for 59/night and Free Dining with Disney Visa. Parking will be free and now costs 12/day if offsite. We like to be able to use Disney Trans. My daughter stayed off site in May at Sheraton Vistana and the cost if see didn't have a car for a shuttle each day to WDW was 9/person/day!! Just make sure if you decide to stay off site to ask on those types of fees as well as "resort Fees"

You may need to define what you mean by a hotel. The value and moderate resorts are more like what are traditionally called motels in the US. All rooms open to a shared outside walkway, they are no indoor walkways. To get a more traditional hotel, you need to stay at one of the deluxe resorts. The cheapest of these are the garden wing at the contemporary, and the wilderness lodge and animal kingdom lodge.

Any of the value resorts are the least expensive. Even factoring in the gas and parking fees, it is probably still slightly cheaper to stay off-site however IMO it is worth the extra money to stay on property. If you have a car, parking at the parks if free to resort guests, you can use the Disney transportation, the theming is so much better at the Disney properties and you are just immersed in Disney for your entire vacation. You really do feel like you're in another world.

If you plan your trip right, you can really plan a trip onsite at the value resorts for pretty cheap! We're doing our second value resort trip (don't get me wrong, would love to stay some place really nice!! but not until the kids are older and can appreciate it, too) and for a family of 5, it's a great deal!! There is nothing like being immersed into everything Disney...it's so happy and everyone is catering you to, we love it!!

For years and years, we stayed offsite and were semi-happy with our accommodations. Then, we stayed onsite. I'll never go back to offsite again!

Our offsite hotel was only a few miles from World Drive but, it still took us a bit to get to the parks. Then, when we reached the theme park parking lot, we had to pay to park (which I now think parking is $11.00 per day).

To get from the parking lot to the park entrance, you have to wait in line to get on a tram which took you to the park entrance. Getting on a tram is utter chaos because there is no structured line and everybody just races to get on the tram. Our family was separated many times in the rush.

When traveling to the Magic Kingdom, you get on a tram at the parking lot which takes you to the Ticket and Transportation Center. From there, you have to get on either the monorail or the ferry which takes you to the park entrance. Whew!

If you are a Disney value resort guest, you will board a bus which takes you directly to each park. You are dropped off near each theme parks entrance.

To get back to your value resort, you take the Disney bus back to your resort.

As other posters have said, you can get some really good rates on the value resorts. It all depends on what time of the year you wish to travel.

On the next screen the Special Offers link is on the left hand side of the page. Click there to see what's offered.

If you want ot know the best time to visit Walt Disney World, you can find that information on the Disney World website as well. Just click on the When to Visit (may be Best Times to Visit) and you'll see what times of the year are considered, peak, regular, holiday and value.

Even if you were to pay $100.00 a night for a value resort, you must factor in your cost to park, your gasoline, etc. For our family, it's just not worth staying offsite anymore. We drive our own car but, during our ten day stay, we drove the car only once or twice.

We are fans of Pop Century also. It is not as nice as a deluxe by any means but it is a fun place to stay and has always been fine for us. To my family it is a must to stay on property just for the convenience alone.
We will be staying there the week of Christmas.

Pop Century...............it is 50 cents a night cheaper than the All Stars due to it being in a different county.....lol

All of the values are in the same price range. That being said, I would recommend the POP if you're going to stay in a value room. It is awesome!!

I just love staying on property. There is nothing like being totally immersed in WDW for 24 hours a day. Pure magic.

Like the others before me said, Value Resorts are the cheapest. I have stayed at the ASmusic twice, and the accomodations were more than fine. There are a couple of things you will have to think about when trying to figure out value. The airport is quite away from Disney World (about 25-30 minutes with light to moderate traffic). I would never think of using a taxi for this, unless it is a van service or the like with a set price. But also, what else do you want to do in Orlando? Staying on Disney property is great if Disney is what you are doing, but if you want to hit the shopping malls or other attractions, you are on your own. However, as long as you stay in the World, free parking and transportation. I found the Value resorts to be fun and happy places. Although they are like motels, they aren't in the cheesy area's of town , filled with mostly happy people, and have a cool vibe. Even though we are going Deluxe this trip, I would'nt think twice about staying at a value resort again.

I agree with Mickeystoontown -- staying onsite beats the stuffing out of offsite. We rented a really nice house with a pool offsite a couple of years ago. It was lovely, and far less expensive than staying onsite in a moderate (which is the type of resort we typically stay in) but the convenience alone makes staying onsite worth it, IMO. If you are onsite, you don't have to worry about driving or parking; you can have packages sent to your resort; you can go back to your room in the middle of the day for a nap if you like! Plus, it seems like you just get immersed in the whole Disney experience to a much greater extent if you are staying onsite.
