Everything Michigan....

Howdy neighbors! I live in Monroe which is south of downriver (there is a whole county below Wayne County!) I think the whole state of Michigan should apply for bankrupty and have the federal government bail it out.
Maybe we should have a dismeet?

I'm all for a DIS meet. MY aunt, who is also a DISer, and I tried to plan a DIS meet last year and no one showed up. Lot's of people SAID they would be there but they weren't.:sad2:

I'm all up for trying it again though. Maybe that first meet was just a fluke thing. :confused3

I can't believe how many neighbors are dissers!! I currently live downriver, but was raised in Redford. Went to CMU for college. Alot of Metro Detroiters here!!!!
I grew up in Redford too:)

I've planned a few Michigan DIS meets in the past (haven't had one in a few years) that had pretty good turn outs.....we've met at 12 Oaks Mall in Novi & at Meridian Mall in East Lansing.

& Feiger running for mayor would be a disaster!:sad2:

Hey there Lars!!! Those DISmeets at 12 Oaks were a lot of fun! I say we start thinking about doing another one in November. It seems the food court at 12 Oaks seems to be centrally located and they were well attended!

Anyone have any thoughts/predictions on what will eventually happen to Christine Beatty?

Bad Bad move on her part  . She is toast! She should've taken the plea deal. KK already admitted they lied on the stand. I think she is making it worse on herself. I bet she is trying to get the sympathy votes.

It wasn't how he said it, it was what he said that impressed me. It's incredibly ironic now, but the topic of his speech was personal responsibility and the duty that we have to others. Knowing that a Republican's chances in Detroit is about that of snowball's in Hades, Kilpatrick seemed like about the best person you could hope for under the circumstances.

sad that he ended up as he did....the youth of detroit could use a role model....

Hi everyone - chiming in from just south of Traverse City here though I grew up in the Detroit area.

I also nearly had a heart attack when I heard GM was in so much trouble. I grew up Chrysler (and in fact, worked for them for a while) where DH grew up GM. It's sad when you think your Dad and FIL may not have a pension in a few years - God willing that won't happen.

We don't hear much about KK up here, but my parents keep me updated. Glad to see he's out. I haven't heard much about the new Mayor - is he temporary? He'll only serve until this November or is it next November? Where is he from (obviously Detroit, but I want to know more about him).

ahhh...traverse city.....beautiful place!!!!

I don't know anything about ken Cockrel - you can read about him in wikipedia...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenneth_Cockrel,_Jr.
his father (a very famous lawyer when i was young and a member of the detroit city council) was one of the most amazing speakers i've ever heard....ever ever......incredible verbal skills...

OMG, this is me! I am originally from Trenton, but my DILs are in Bloomfield Hills. DSIL in Novi and the other is in Northville! My DBIL lives off of Lahser in Bloomfield Hills, My DMIL, too.

I was up there a couple of days ago, it sure has gotten interesting in Detroit. Who would have thought there was a mayor that could make Coleman Young look good??

I left in 1985.

i went off to university in 1973.....came back to live in detroit from 1985 to 90....haven't lived there since, but i visit at least once a year for a few weeks, sometimes more (helping out my mom and sister during their cancer treatments)...

Long story short, my parents' 8 years in Amway/Quixtar almost destroyed their marriage and has left them close to financial ruin. This Dateline segment pretty much sums up what my parents bought hook, line,... and sinker. Books, tapes, meeting fees, and such... they did it all. They were convinced all of the time that "freedom" was just right around the corner. What they didn't know was that those things (books, tapes, "major function" fees, etc.) were the primary income source of those they "worshiped", and not the commissions from the sales of Amway products. Even though Amway isn't directly responsible for these scams, they know about the abuses, but they are dependent on the sales from the scammers and have decided to look the other way. Therefore, I view them as being just as guilty.

oh - a pyramid scheme....those always seem really shifty to me...

Hello Neighbors!

DH and I both grew up in Dearborn - I'm a Fordson grad and he's a Dearborn grad. We raised our family in Woodhaven and Allen Park a/k/a downriver. We have lived in the Lansing area since late 1992. We are frequently in the Dearborn and downriver area visiting friends and relatives and DH works (or primarily laid off this year) at the Ford Truck Plant in Wayne.

I thought KK would never resign because of his ego. I had to listen to his "farewell" speech and it sounded like he was on a campaign. But, of course, he said he'll be back.

Coleman ran the city into disrepair. Archer never had a chance to bring it back. KK wasted taxpayers' money. What a sad comentary about our beloved Motor City.

Do any of you, or are any of you old enough, remember Lou Gordon on channbel 50 with his rants on Jerome Cavanagh? This was in the 60s.

Yeah MSU!!!!! My DH was there and has season tickets.

Enjoy this beautiful weekend.

Jan

sure i remember Lou Gordon...
i was born in 1955 and lived in the area until 73 (when i went off to university)...so i remember lou gordon, soupy sales, captain what's his name....what was his name????
poop deck paul, twin pines dairy, the JL hudson building downtown (now THAT was a real store), himelhochs, jacobsens, food fair,
what was the name of that old guy on tv who showed movies.........bill kennedy?
i could go on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on...

as for sports teams....go pistons.....if i'm in detroit when there's a game at the palace, i'm THERE.....

two brilliant ideas....government bailout of michigan....and a dismeet..

if you have a dismeet when i'm visiting my family, you can most definitely count me in!!!!

Sounds good to me. :thumbsup2

I vote for 12 Oaks Mall. Someone pick a date (preferably a Saturday).:goodvibes

I'm good with Saturday in Nov as long as it's not the Saturday after thanksgiving. :thumbsup2

I agree, not the saturday after Thanksgiving. OR the day of the MSU U of M game.

Does anyone know when that is?

Count me in (for the Dis meet - not the game!). :rotfl2:

Great thread WardFamily1. :goodvibes

Dh and I both grew up in Detroit. He was an east sider and I lived in Southwest Detroit (I could see the Ambassador Bridge from my upstairs bedroom window). We met at Wayne State.

My family moved to Canton when I was 16 (it was all dirt roads and cornfields back then!). Still a Canton girl and probably always will be unless I can convince the powers that be at Disney to let me move in to the Magic Kingdom.

Dh is a Ford man! He loved that company so much. I always said he would work there for nothing if we could afford it. Now he's retired and we're worried about their future (and ours!). If our government can bale out Wall Street they sure as heck need to help our automotive industry.

It's a beautiful day today. We're heading over to the Big Bear Lodge in Brownstown to celebrate our bf's 35th wedding anniversary.

U of M plays MSU on Octber 25th. I have son who is a freshman at U of M, so you know which team we'll be rooting for this year!

I have lived in the Detroit suburbs all my life. My step-dad is a retired GM employee, my dad works for a smaller company that deals primarily with GM, and DH is a project manager in company that does business with the automotive industry. We obviously hope that the auto industry can get through this!

Hey Ricky's Girl, :wave2: I'm glad you found the thread! ;)

Just an FYI to whomever is going to plan the DIS meet, 12 Oaks no longer has a Disney Store. :guilty: The only stores I know of are at Great Lakes Crossing and Lakeside Mall.
