Cheer Competition at Universal

Hi All,
I have done many All Star cheer competitions in Disney. Our gym is going to a competition that is going to be taking place in Universal Studios in March 2009. Has anyone out there attended a competition in Universal?:confused3

I had a few questions..
Where does it take place in the parks?
Did you stay on property?
If you did/didn't stay on property would you do it the same way again?

We have an option of either staying on property or not. My wallet would like me to stay offsite but I do like the idea of being right there and getting the front of line ride perks for our time between competing.
Please let me know if you have any answers for me.
Thanks so much!

Our team did not go the year our gym went to Universal three years ago, but from what I remember, the actual competitions were in the sound stages in Universal Studios. If it is the Spirit Nationals, they are being held in Toon Lagoon in IOA.

Since you have the option of staying where you want, I would definitely stay on site. You are only a boat ride or a short walk away from the parks, so getting back and forth is easy. You won't be completely dependent on competition or hotel transportation to get back and forth to the venue.

If you forget a bow, spankies, hairspray, etc, you are only a 10 minute walk away. Much faster when you are running :teeth:

Convenience of FOTL on your off times is an added bonus. Since there never seems to be big blocks of time between practices and competitions, FOTL will let you get the most of Universal in that you can. You also have a multitude of places to eat within walking distance at Citywalk.

What are the exact dates of this event?

And....how does it effect the crowd level?

Not sure if this is the one the OP is going to, but there is US Spirit Nationals being held at Universal 3/27 - 3/29.

Expect the cheerleaders to be coming in a day or two earlier and perhaps staying later if they are making a vacation out of it.

Looking at their website though, it says the competition will be at Toon Lagoon in IOA.

The hotels being used onsite by the competition are the Royal Pacific and the Hard Rock. However, depending on the gym's policies, some are allowed to make their own arrangements, so it doesn't mean that there will not be any cheerleaders at the Portofino.

As for crowd levels, since they are using available onsite rooms, it wouldn't be any different than having non-cheer customers in those rooms.

Yes, that's the one we are going to. Cheerleading Worlds in Disney is the biggest amusement park competition and reports have always been that it does not affect crowd level at the parks. I'm guessing that since this competition although large is not a HUGE one that it too would not affect crowd levels. Thanks to all for the information. I would love to hear from someone that has attended this competition in the past and how they liked staying in Universal.
Thanks! :goodvibes

You might want to try the cheer parent thread over on the CB. You might have more luck with somebody who has cheered at Universal.

We were at UCA nationals in March at Disney and HS did seem a bit more crowded than usual, but it didn't seem to really affect the rides as the cheerleaders were usually just standing around waiting to go on stage. Although, it is hard to judge the Disney competitions for Universal, as many of the groups actually compete at the Milkhouse away from the actual parks. WWOS was a total zoo when we were there.

I would assume if you are going during that time, you will see large groups of cheerleaders standing around the Toon Lagoon stage, and maybe some groups around the parks during their off times. But it shouldn't be a huge impact as most of them are there to cheer, not vacation. For instance, our gym won't even let our kids go on rides or use the pool from Friday evening until after you finish competing on Sunday.

Good luck!!

We are heading to Cheersport in Atlanta. While exciting, I would love to have DD cheer at our favorite themepark!!!

 Maybe we will see you down there. Where are you staying? Our team is staying at the Sheraton Atlanta.

We always do two nationals and this year is the first time there is one in Denver, so we are doing Denver and Atlanta.

The other teams are doing Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, LA (the new IALC for the < level 5 teams), and then hopefully back to Worlds. :cheer2: :cheer2:
