Help Everybody!!! I think we have finally ironed it out that we are not going to exchange gifts with our extended families this year. Each family instead is going to bring something to the party Christmas Eve for everybody to enjoy. We also want to make it simple for the host/hostess by not having a hot cooked meal this year. Soooo, I need ideas of something different to take. We will probably do the deli tray and shrimp tray, but does anybody else have any cool, different ideas for something to take? Like I said, the cold cuts, shrimp tray and desserts. We talked about crab legs, kahlua, chicken wings, etc. Help please!!!!!

Oooh! Oooh! Here's my favorite Christmas thing: A Shrimp Tree.

Buy a tall styrofoam cone at a craft store. Cover the cone with clean large green lettuce leaves (I use romaine)--pin the leaves with fancy toothpicks, you know the kind with colored cellophane on the end. Then pin boiled shrimp to the "christmas tree" and put out several small bowls with cocktail sauce around the base.
:yay:

Great idea, thanks!

I've grilled or roasted marinated pork tenderloins, slice and serve with small rolls and good quality mustards. It's not served in a platter, but Cooking Light has a wonderful spinach-artichoke hot dip. I bring it to parties and always get asked for the recipe.

I am the Host/Hostess she is speaking about and I would love to have a shrimp tree at our party! Hint Hint.....

We do king crab legs on Christmas Eve and they are so easy and YUMMY!!! We have done fondue in the past, too... more work but very fun!

We do a family christmas the weekend between christmas and new years's. We have a party as you are describing with mostly apps and desserts. Over the year's we have found we do need one or two things that are more of a meal to satisfy some of the men!! We basically do platters and crock pots.

meatballs, roast pork sliced in gravy, roast beef in gravy (usually beef or pork not both) and rolls.

sometimes a ham

mac and cheese

vegetable tray to get some healthy crunch

antipasta - marinated mozzerlla balls, bruchetta, artichokes, olives, etc. with the thicker toasted bread crackers.

hot apps that are either homemade or purchased as weman's (stuffed mushrooms, shrimp wontons, spanikoita, etc.)

The # one hit year after year - pigs in a blanket - the kids just love them.

We do this with paper plates and it reallly does make the prep and clean-up a lot easier than a traditional holiday meal.

How do you pin the shrimp to the cone for the shrimp tree. Thanks! I might make this at our Christmas party. I may even try it for Thanksgiving because it sounds so cool and I can't wait.

What size styrofoam cone?

Thanks.

Maggie
