Ok, well it's not dead but we have a DLP and I think the bulb died and it's $200 to get a new one and we have no idea how to even replace the bulb. Anyone have experience with this problem? it's a Toshiba DLP we got two years ago so no warrenty left on this tv.

I just replaced my bulb in my Samsung DLP 56". Was very easy, took all of 10-15 minutes to do.

1 Unscrew the door on the back of the TV, open.
2 Pull out the bulb plastic carrier.
3 Unscrewed 2 screws where the wires hook to the bulb.
4 Unscrewed 4 screws that hold the bulb in the carrier.
5 Put new bulb in put back together the way I took it apart.
6 Put back in TV, make sure the door is shut correctly and screwed tight. Most TV's have a door sensor to see if it is open.

I got my bulb at http://www.discount-merchant.com/
Was the best price on the web. They have instruction on there website to.

Randy, thanks for the info. I guess I'm not that freaked out now but those bulbs are expensive and you know my Dh is freaking out because Football season is starting and he can't watch the game on a non HD Tv. lol

Question: How often do you think the bulbs need replaced? I am actually waiting for the repair man to come to replace mine tomorrow. We have been without a TV for 2 weeks, and I LOVE IT. But anyway, this is the second time in 3 months the bulb went. The TV is 1.5 yrs old, and we do not watch it all the time. We have other tv's.

DLP TV's need a new buld around 3000 hours. Ask your repair man to tell you how manny hours you got out of the old bulb. The TV does keep track of this. He will have to reset the counter anyway back to 0.

I had a 52" Toshiba DLP set that lost 3 bulbs in the first two months. I had to wait weeks for the first one as they were on back order. Once I found out that they are $300-400 and need to be replaced every 3000 hours I promptly returned it to Best Buy and purchased a 50" HP plasma. Two years later and not a single problem with the plasma.

DLP technology is not ready for use in consumer applications. It is too fragile and expensive to repair. My old LCD projection TV was a better technology that lasted for 7 years before problems began.

so how do you reset the counter? will we have to do that as well?

We just had to replace the bulb on our Sony last month. I'm sure all of the bulbs are different, but my husband was able to find the bulb we needed on amazon.com through River Valley Electronics

This was just the bulb and we used the existing case in the tv.

It took him less than 10 minutes to change it.
