All I want is the most extraordinary 9th B-day cake ever - is that too much to ask???

My theme for our disney trip this year is "making our own magic". So far so good. Ive submitted my GOAL wish, I have a 8am BBB appointment on her B-Day, pirate cruise, giftbaskets in the works, etc.

A truely spectacular birthday cake is one of these moments and I have to be honest - its the only one causing me worry.

A little background: We are lucky enough to be going to WDW for my daughters 9th birthday - during the "worst week" possible to go - but we are going. In 1999 I baked my daughter a mickey mouse cake for her first birthday. I spent days decorating it. It wouldn't fit in the fridge so the logical place to cool items in NE during the winter - the garage. It was a horrible mistake. A cyber mouse with super mouse like muscles opened the tupperware. Resulting in last minute - first birthday - cookies rather than cake - ever since then - I have done whatever I can to make her birthday cakes extra special.

Ive looked through the whole cake thread - searched and searched - for tips, photos, phone numbers and flavors. I booked our magical birthday dinner at 1900 Park Fare so we can take advantage of the advaced methods of the GF bakery. Im ready and waiting to call 3 weeks out from our trip - but Im really looking for the extra special and willing to pay for it.

Whats the key - what do I say to get the bakery to be open to the extraordinary when its the busiest week of the year. How do I convince them them that this is important to us and we are looking for more than the ordinary sheet cake. I found a photo on one of the GF threads of the cake below - but this person had connections of some sort - this is just the type of cake we want - a super - over the top B-day cake.

Anyone out there know what they key is - do I call the bakery direct - is it the resturant - who is best suited to take my extra special cake order???

Your advice is deeply appreciated - Whip

I don't think you need connections, just money. My guess is that they'd be pleased to provide you with anything you want, assuming you are willing to pay for it.

I'd guess a cake like that one would run you quite a bit of cash.

I just read your pre-trip report. Good luck with your suprise - it sounds so great!!!

No real secret, just very deep pockets.

Best of luck for the birthday surprise!! I'm sorry, but I had to laugh at the rat story! I have done cakes for dd and ds every birthday and I can totally feel for you. I have never heard of that happening-it sounds really funny though. Check this and you should find a number. http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1173219I would recommend confirming before you leave and at check in as well. I ordered dh a cake in feb. and they forgot about it.:scared1: But I did get it after a little asking around.

Good luck and would love to see pictures when you return. ;)

You do need connections. For that type of cake you need to call the GF intimate dinning area. Not the private dinning (room service or bakery). You need the intimate dining. I no longer have the number but I know you can search for it. Just an FYI that cake will be a pretty penny probably at least $100. Good luck.

That looks like a mad hatter cake top. If so one person had a similar one and said it was around $125+ tax and 18% tip. Not horrible, just preparing you. That is a very cool looking cake!!!

If that is near what you expected please PM me, I believe I know who you need to talk to, and also you should call before the 3 week mark. Due to the busy season (guessing x-mas?) they could potentially run out of time slots dedicated to custom cakes. Start talking to them at 3 months out, confirm at 3 weeks, 3 days and even 3 hours. I wish I was kidding, but constant communication seems to help.

Wishing you luck! :)

Call the nearest Publix and see if they have the Chocolate Ganache Supreme cake. It cost about $20 and is the best tasting cake I have ever had. We got one in June for my birthday (heard about it on the radio in the car going down and saw it on the TV in the hotel the night before we arrived at WDW). Check out the Publix Website to see if they still offer that cake. Just thinking about it has my mouth watering. Here is a link to that cake: http://www.publix.com/food/catalog/ProductDetail.do?id=10057

By the way, we got a special cake from the GF once for my son's birthday when we stayed in Sugarloaf. Shaped like Mickey Mouse. Cost about $50 and it was the worst tasting cake we ever ate. Threw most of it away.

Cakes made with that fondant icing look very good but taste like Playdoh.

Uh, after you check out the other Publix cake, check out the Macho Mocha under "Grooms Cakes" This was our wedding cake with fresh stawberry filling - oh how I miss that cake!

They can also do Disney cakes and the flavor and texture is amazing!

Thanks for all the tips - I love Publix cakes also (i spent quality time there the last time I stayed at the palms) but I really want a disney cake - somehow I feel like I can finally make up for the mickey mouse cake disaster. I dont like the taste of fondant either but my daughter doesnt like frosting - she scrapes it off - its all about the cake for her - so Fondant is perfect for us. Tinker I sent you a PM for that info - thanks so much for your help! Whip

Hi Whip ... I don't have any GF Bakery info to pass on ... but would like to say that you must be a pretty great mom to go to the lengths you are to make up for a first birthday cake mishap! :goodvibes

(My nephew just celebrated his first birthday, and we baked him a "little cake" just for himself and he pretty much destroyed it and a had a great time doing so ... I don't think he even really noticed that it was decorated special or anything!!)

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like you would be putting out a lot of $$ for a cake that you all will get a thrill of looking at but not necessarily enjoy eating!! (I don't know, but if you are going to just scrape the icing off, why spend that much money on the cake in the first place?)

A birthday trip to Disney with the BBB and the GOAL suprises is going to make it an awesome birthday for her ... I wouldn't stress so much about the cake! :goodvibes

Easy ya'll let Whip do her thing...I think it is wonderful your doing this for your daughter Whip!!! My son and I have a tradition...every year for our birthdays we go to MK (we skip school and work ;) ) and I do whatever I can to make it as magical as I can for him. He is going to be 21 this year and guess what he wants to do for his special day...just him and I at MK!!! Your daughter will remember this the rest of her life!!! You're a great mom and if you can splurge a bit do it b/c it is never a waste when it is on a magical smile that comes from your childs toes!!!
Happy Birthday to your baby girl (even though she is 9 hehehehe)princess:

WOW! The cakes at the publix store look good. What store is closest to Disney?

Good luck with your cake from Disney, if you have the money go for it!

There is a fairly new Publix over by the Outlet Mall (close to where Dolly Parton used to have her place - recently shut down). That's where I got mine. It was the most marvelous birthday cake I have ever had. I had some every morning for breakfast until it was gone.

Don't get me wrong ... I also think it's wondeful that Whip wants to make her daughter's birthday at Disney extra special ... it just seem to me that with all the magic that Whip has already got in place, the cake wasn't something to stress over. (Now, if it's "good" stress, as in Whip's having fun searching for that special cake ... I say "Go for it!".) :goodvibes

WOW, I am wishing there was a Publix around me!!! Those cakes look fabulous and I would love to try one!!

Do people really eat the fondant? We just peel it off and eat the cake and frosting underneath. I didn't think you were supposed to eat it. :confused3

Have you checked out the cake thread? There are some great cakes on there! Someone got a small version of a "seas" wedding cake. Shells, starfish, sand (assumed it was brown sugar)... very cute, but very expensive. I'm sure if you chose a place like GF to make your cake, they would work with you on the phone. And if you have a photo in mind, I'm pretty sure you could email it to them once you talked to someone.

Good luck, and have a GREAT time! pixiedust:

OK not to go too OT here, but I am from Florida and I am definitely a Publix devotee. Their cakes are FABULOUS and I swear they are the greatest grocery store ever!!! So trust us from this area of the country that their bakery is great!!

(too bad there isn't some way I can get a paycheck for my fabulous publix support? ;) )

I LOVE fondant - I hate sweet icings but a good fondant is sweet without being sugary sweet. Lots of people don't make good fondants, though, and it tastes like play dough. I love the texture. Man, now I'm craving fondant icing...

Most bakers will put a layer of buttercream under the fondant for an added taste of sweetness and for people that don't care for fondant to be able to pull it off. It's definitely edible.
