I've been looking at the menus on allears trying to get an idea of how much our bill may be so I can set aside tip money for each meal. I realize this won't be exact but I thought I could get a "guess-timation". Does anyone know the % of tax they will add to our bill?

State tax is 6% but some counties have additional taxes

I've always heard that you should tip based upon the pre-tax amount. I often tip on the after-tax amount, but if I have an expensive meal where the tax amount is large, I will use the pre-tax amount. In that case, I'm usually tipping 20-25% on the pre-tax amount.

I have always heard that too. You base your tip on PRE-tax amount.

:) Thanks for the help. I think I knew that, guess I just forgot. :confused3

For most of Disney it is 6% but a portion it is 7%. Disney World resides in Orange and Oceola counties, and one county has a "local option" 1% addition.

Looking at my receipts from Jan/Feb 2008:

Restaurants at DTD, AK, MGM, MK, Epcot, plus off site restaurants were 6.5%.

Retail location on Disney property, World of Disney, Pin Traders, China Pavillion, etc, were 6.5%.

However, Walmart, Joann's Sam's Club, and Sally's Beauty Supply offsite were all 7%.

For the automatic tips that Disney put on my reciepts (for the ones where I used my DDE card to get a discount), the tip was calculated on the total food cost BEFORE the DDE discount, but tax was on the discounted food cost and did NOT include the tip.

In other words:

At Sci Fi we spent $64.12 in food, got $12.82 discount, paid $11.54 tip and $3.34 tax.

Hope that helps!

that I have found is take the 6% tax amount and triple it. That's an 18% gratuity, which you can round up a little or down a bit depending on the level of service.

My rule of thumb is to tip on the food amount before discounts and before tax. I also second doubling/tripling (depending on the location) the tax rate to get an approximate tip.

But I'm also a former server so I tend to overtip...

Tax won't affect your tip as you are supposed to tip on the before tax amount.

Tax does not affect your tip.

However, the sales/food tax at Disney is 6.5% not 6%. All Stars and Pop are in a different county from most of the rest of the complex and their tax is 7%

Wow! Where is doubling the tax considered overtipping? I'm staying away from that location!

When I was in Chicago this past weekend my meals had a 10.25% tax, so doubling that would be 20.5%, which is usually an overtip.

You remove thre tax before you tip?!? How odd and how time consuming for you. Unless you are eating $200+ meals, you are talking about cents difference in your tip. If you check is $50 the tax is around $3 which means you are saving 50-70 cents by bothering to calculate based on pre-tax amount of check. Doesn't seem worth it. We just do 20% of the check amount and manage up a little for exceptional service and down a little if service is poor. Makes life much easier.

Your tip should be based on the cost of the food alone, not the tax. :)

I also understood that you don't have to tip on alcoholic beverages. Can you imagine the increase in the tip? Especially if several or many drinks are ordered and they run quite expensive at WDW. So, the tip is on the food and service. Not the tax or alcohol.
