How cheap are you...would you do this?

Absolutely postively NO way would I put my 12 year old child in a room to potentially sleep and/or share a bathroom with other strangers.
Nothing is worth that risk. Especially a vacation. :worried:

There are things to me, more important than Disney every year - such as sleeping in a room with only people I know.

Heck no. NO way, NO how. None....

Find someone to go with you. Split the cost of the room. :confused3

Someone you know, of course. ;)

Apparently none for some people.:confused3 I don't get it myself either.

Me neither, but perhaps it isn't a case of the OP not being able to afford it, as she actually states that it is "too expensive". Perhaps she is just not willing to pay for hotels, but is willing to pay for the airfare to get them there. I suppose all of us have a different order of priorities, right? We are driving to FL instead of flying cuz I still want a deck this summer. :bitelip: (Shhhhh! Don't tell my DH though!)

Flying vs. Driving is one thing. Rooming with a bunch of strangers with your child (or even without) is entirely something else.

I would only do that if I had enough people going with me to fill up all 6 beds and they promised to keep us together with no others in the room. It is just too scarry to think of what kind of wacko's you could possibly be staying in the same room with. Not to mention things like someone coming in the middle of the night and waking you, someone staying up late watching TV when you were trying to sleep etc.

Yes Flying vs Driving personal preference.. Last year we flew (okay we didn't the plane that took us there did) and it was terrible.. I can't see us ever doing it again. I dont know if the fun disneyland vacation can still be great sharing a room with strangers you dont even know.. and I looked at the prices for those hostels.. You can find hotel rooms for 15$ a night cheaper than the cost of 2 beds for some of them. Maybe the OP just didn't realize that?

I did some searching on the OPs other posts to see where she was coming from...

Re: Stimulus Check
Well, it's supposed to be deposited the first week of May and we go to Disney the last week, lol, so mine is for the trip, too.

First, I am planning to splurge and buy myself some new clothes for the trip. I've been on a tight budget the past three years or so, and the newest outfits I bought were for Disneyland in 2005! I have a couple of Walmart shirts that are only a year old, but I am going to splurge and get myself something new for the trip...not enough for all 7 days, but hopefully at least 4days worth! I'm a budget shopper so I figure that will come to about $225.

Our air, resort, and tickets were paid in full last fall, so the balance on my refund will go to cover meals, tips, and souvenirs. I know there's no way we'll spend over $800 on that sort of stuff, but it will be nice to have that come from "found" money instead of savings. (No credit here!)

I am taking it that the OP doesn't use credit & does have savings, nothing wrong with that!

Now, I am all for budget & being frugal, but a hostel is WAY over the top on the frugal meter, IMO.

We just got back from Disney World and I feel compelled to start planning another Disney trip :hyper: . The thing is, there is NO way we can do Disney World again for at least 3 years. It is just too expensive.

If we want to do Disney next year, it would have to be Disneyland. The airfare there is much less. I've found round-trip flights for under $200. I've also found a hostile at a nearby university where we can stay for $15 each a night. Yes, a hostile. 6 beds to a room...so we would easily be bedding down with strangers in the dorm. Public bathrooms and all.

I think it sounds like an adventure. My 12 year old thinks I've lost my mind. Mind you, if I could get a deal at HoJos like I did in '05 (I booked at $65 a night, but could have gotten $55 a month earlier), I'd book there again in a minute. But, there's no guarantee of finding a cheap, good quality room so near Disneyland.

I figure that we could do a week there for half the price of a week at Disney World. Is anyone else crazy enough to do this????

nope!!!!

I wouldn't do it anywhere at anytime for any reason. I don't even like staying at family's homes. I want my own tv, my own bath, my own coffee maker and my own wifi. On and ROOM SERVICE. I know this is the budget board but I just stay home like I am this summer rather then push the envelope on my comfort level.

Check out mcmenamins.com for their European style, bathrooms down the hall, B&Bs. :)

Doesn't help the OP, but not all places with bathrooms down the halls are sick 'n wrong.

I still want to know what college this is!

I love Disney as much as the next person... but a hostel with my DD????? Can you say "Oh H&## to the NO!!!!!! " I'm sure with all the other wonderful ideas that you can find a way to get there on a dime... good luck!!!!!

Priceline
SkyAuction

You don't need to stay in a hostle to get good rates.

Dawn

There is definitely a campground closer than 34 miles, I just can't remember exactly where. It may not be KOA though. Also, what university is that close to DL?? It can't be that close.

I might do this if I were single. But married, Dh is way too overprotective for that. Plus, he'd prefer to stay home than not have a nice place to stay.

I'd seriously try to talk him into the one in Hawaii with private rooms though!

No offense but I have to agree with your 12 year old.

Mickey Mouse isn't worth my family's safety.

I am 24 and have stayed in plenty of hostels as a student in Europe and "adventure" is a word for it. The quality of a hostel can vary greatly. The people I met there were definitely charachters and some of them behaved in questionable activities. While I had fun in the end, and can laugh now about some of my accomodations, I was an adult and made the decision to stay in these places in order to be able to afford seeing Europe. On the other hand I would not expose a child to some of the questionable people that I met. As a 22 year old I could handle it, but as a 12 year old I would not have been okay. JMO.

I would wait until I had enough money to vacation the way I wanted to vacation. No freakin way would I stay in a hostel.
