Just opened fridge and realized that i could feel the heat from the lightbulb. Our fridge is dead. How long are these things supposed to last. :confused3It's only 10 years old! Freezer still works though. Hubby - who is a A/C RAC technician says we should buy a new one. :lmao:

anyone know of any good appliance sales still going on?
anyone have suggestions for a good one?

we have the freezer on the bottom and like that. - but have always wanted a side-by-side.
MIL has the freezer on the bottom, but it's a drawer that pulls out. don't like that.

They last a lot longer than 10 years! My mom had one in a rental that she just replaced (it was brown and at least 30 yr old) it still worked. Ours is 20 and still works fine. My sil just had hers repaired, it cost $55.00 and now is fine. You probably don't need a new one unless you want a new one. Watch those side by sides, get the largest one you can because they just don't seem to have as much room.

that's what is bothering me. DH fixes refrigeration for a living but "doesn't feel like" trying to figure out what's wrong with ours:rolleyes1

Then I would call someone else in to fix it...

Buying new just because hubby doesn't want to deal with it seems silly to me.

Good luck and I hope it all works out!

i agree
but dealing with the male ego can cost just as much.:headache:

Our fridge is dead. ... Freezer still works though.

That is interesting since on ours and a couple of others I have seen, the freezer is where most of the air goes through to cool and then there is a fan to push the cold air back into the fridge part. So if the fridge is dead then the freezer part is dead as well.

As for time, some last forever and some die quickly. We have had the bi-metal temperature switch die on ours and had the fan replaced. Neither were cheap (parts were around 160, labor was almost double that). If the compressor is dead, it is cheaper to get a new one.

With the energy efficient ones today, it may be better to replace it than to fix it.

Ours went a few years back and we purchased another GE model - side-by-side with water and icemaker on the door. My father worked for them for many years and, although he is deceased, my mom still gets a discount on GE products. My old one was over 30 years old and still running....that was the problem, though, it kept running and never "recycled" off. My repair guy said it was burning energy needlessly, not to mention a fire hazard. I am happy with the new one so far. But GE is getting out of the appliance business. If they do eventually sell it to someone else, they may have some deals, but of course you would have to ensure that they will support the products. Every appliance we have is from GE and we've had lots of luck. I'm not looking forward to vetting a new brand.

As a PP noted, watch the side-by-side models. Apart from being a bit narrow (doesn't hold a large party platter), they also can be deeper than your kitchen cabinets. Be sure to measure your cabinets depth as well as the width of the refrigerator space.

Unless your DH decides to take a look at the one you have! :)

There must be some bad-fridge karma going around. Ours died yesterday (it was 12 years old). We ended up buying a new one (a side-by-side LG) that was delivered this afternoon. Our new one uses over 200 Kw less per year than the old one (and the old one was smaller), so you might see some energy savings with a new one. Good luck with your choice.

thanks for all the input.
Apparently, the size of the opening we have for a fridge limits our choices and I cannot get a side by side:worried:
We went out today looking at new ones and I fell in love with the LG French doors/bottom mount freezer model.
As it would figure, it's a brand new model and delivery isn't expected to stores until mid-June!
Of course, it's also 2x the price of the ones DH is trying to steer me towards. I figure, rather than settle for something because it's cheap, i'd rather get something i'll be happy with. And with the french doors - the're be no problem with party platters!;)
Now to convince DH that we can last 3 weeks without a fridge:duck:

I second the bad fridge Karma. Ours died tonight:( I saw some water on the floor in front but figured someone had just left ice laying in the floor, lazy kids with those ice makers on the front, sheesh. Oh well I wish that was all it was, its not working at all.:worried: Ours is only about 4 years old-bought brand new at lowes I can't believe its quit working. It was making a loud grinding noise tho we figured it was just the ice maker but now the whole thing isn't cooling at all. Oh well, going to try and call the repairman tomorrow but my brother says with the noise it was making he bets its the motor. I figured something big would go wrong when we are fixing to leave for disney REALLY soon. Glad we have some backup funds to replace it!:faint:

Nope, not any more! The older models did last longer than the newer ones but now getting 10 years out of a compressor is good (although if the freezer is working it isn't the compressor).:confused3
Our repairman told us that now you'll get about 7-8 years out of the lower end brands like Frigidaire, GE, etc. and about 12 out of a Whirlpool.

so sorry to hear about everyone else's bad fridge-karma.:hippie:
why can't they "start to go" when we have the funds (and time) to choose the one we reeeeallly want?
2 weeks without a fridge....
of settle for one i'll look at everyday for the next 10 years and wish i could've gotten the one i really wanted...:confused3

I saw that on the news as well. I've been eyeing a GE PRofile range for a while now and wonder if the prices will drop before they sell to another company or if now is the time to buy. :confused3

I love the look of a side-by-side, but it does not hold much in the freezer section. Especially with the icemaker, which takes up a fair amount of space. I was looking for one with the freezer on the bottom until I realized that all that stooping would probably not be the greatest idea! :rotfl: I do not have another "dedicated" freezer. Those who stock up on sales in the frozen food section should consider this before buying a side-by-side.

There are some side by sides that have the icemaker in the door of the freezer instead of in the freezer compartment. Unfortunately, the ones I've seen with that feature are on the higher end of the price scale, but they do exist. Our new LG fridge is that way and several others were available that had this feature too. It really does save a ton of freezer space (but your ice bin isn't as big).

Our fridge just died a month ago and we had to take a floor model because we needed one ASAP. We went with a Maytag with French doors and a bottom freezer and absolutely love it. It was on clearance at Home Depot. It cost us a little over $1000. We measured side by side fridges and they did not have nearly as much interior fridge space, so don't be disappointed that a side by side doesn't fit in your space. The bottom freezer on our new fridge is a little smaller than our last fridge with the top freezer, but that's ok with us because we have a chest freezer too. Go for the French doors! You won't be disappointed.
