I had root canal done after my oldest child arrived-- January or February of 1998.

Last time I went to the dentist, he said the tooth really needed a crown. So I gathered up my courage and had a temporary crown put in on Friday-- the real one will be ready after they re-open after Passover, the week of May 5. I have been so incredibly careful to eat on the right side of my mouth, since the dentist mentioned that the crown might very well pop out.

Needless to say, it did at dinner tonight. Here goes my vent:

- I have a miserable cold. So I REALLY don't want stuff crammed into my mouth as I struggle to breathe. My mouth HURT a good part of the weekend; I could live without that again for another temporary fix.

- Tomorrow after school is my daughter's last speech class. I can't cancel; we have to give her teacher the thank you gift I picked up today after work.

- Early tomorrow, 25 teachers from my school leave with 400 Seniors for Grad night at WDW. Two more teachers are at a funeral (Mother in law of one, his son-in-law also teaches with us, so they're both out.) Dead or alive, I HAVE to go to work tomorrow. We don't get subs, we cover classes internally. We're maxed out on subs tomorrow and Friday.

So I have a porcelain (I think) crown in a cup in the kitchen. I have a hole in my mouth where the crown used to be. 11 I've left a message at the dentist's machine, basically asking him to squeeze me in at 4 tomorrow so I can get to speech at 5:30.

I managed without the crown for 9 years. Is this Murphy's law or what???

I've had two root canals were they put the temp thing on and never gone to get the perm one put on because I can't stand going to the dentist. I have to admit, part of the temp crown is gone on the tooth, but it never hurts or anything.... I think you'll be just fine till you can get in.

Wow, sounds like I'm not the only one with bad dental karma! On my last Disney cruise we boarded the ship and went to the dining room for our first meal. I bit into a piece of foccacia bread and one of my molars cracked in two. Talk about bad timing!

Anyway, I hope everything works out okay for you and I'm really sorry to hear about your situation. Just hang in there and in a few hours this chaos will be history. Think about the nice relaxing weekend you have ahead. :)

Oh, I'm fine-- the tooth is dead so I'm not in any pain or anything.

But he did mention that if it did pop out, he would need to see me to get it back in so the space doesn't close up. (Come on, I'm 49 years old. Do you mean to tell me I'm still growing? Aren't things pretty much set in place by now????)

My husband is working LOTS in the next few days-- he works part time after school as a photographer. Some of what he does is for the local Catholic Newspaper, and the Pope will be in NY over the next few days. While he won't be shooting that, their full time photographers are all tied up, so he's busy.) That means that I have to get Kira to speech, and all 3 kids to a birthday party on Friday afternoon and I have them all day Saturday. I just don't have time for the dentist, and could live without another weekend of eating mushy foods because my mouth hurts.

OK, I'm all done whining. Thanks for listening. I guess I should just be very very happy that it doesn't hurt and count my blessings :)

I'm always having crowns pop off, especially during this past year and a half when I did invisalign. All you need to do is go buy some Fixadent and stick it back on. It may pop off again but it is a good temporary fix. Good luck!

OH, great idea!

I'll run that one by him tomorrow when I call during my free period. That will buy me some time.

I had a root canal just after my 2nd child was born. Who wants a root canal a month after giving birth? Anyway, we moved and I had to find a new dentist to do the crown. Well, the temporary one didn't last long. It actually stayed on, but got a huge hole in it! It was very annoying because food kept getting stuck in it! I called the dentist to complain and they told me that the temporary one cracks like mine did or falls off all the time. They told me to wait it out and they'd have me come in right away when the permanent crown was ready. Thankfully after a root canal you don't feel anything in that otherwise I would probably have been in a lot of pain!

This is why I HATE going to the dentist! I hate the idea of a root canal with a passion!

See, that's why you SHOULD go to the dentist!!! Catch those problems before they turn into needing a root canal. Much better than waiting until you have the pain of an abcessed tooth to deal with (and you'll still need the root canal). My dh waited once, felt some twinges and decided to tough it out. By the time he mentioned it to me (and I had to make an emergency appt. for him) it had progressed to needing a root canal and new crown. Me, at the first sign of somthing amiss, I am RUNNING to my wonderful dentist. I've had a lot of tooth trauma over the years, and all I can say, it's never, ever better to wait.

My dentist is such a sweetie!!!

I called and explained how, dead or alive, I HAD to be at work today and tomorrow. (Being short 25 out of 100 faculty members is a problem!!! The dean, in addition to his own 2 classes, covered 2 other classes. One more person calling in sick would have been a serious issue!!!)

He got me in at 4 pm, out at 4:08 pm. :) :)

What he means by the space closing up is when the tooth is shaved down to make the temp crown and the impression for the permanent one, the gums are tramatized, as they start to heal, they heal around the temp crn so that way, the perm one will fit the right way...but if there is no temp on top of the shaved tooth, when the gums heal, they heal around the very small part of the tooth that is left and when you try to put on the permanent crown, it just sits on top of the gum, not fitting at all, instead of sitting down on top of the tooth with the gums around the permanent crown.

I work in a dental office and a lot of patients don't believe us and they don't call us when the temp pops out and when they come in to seat their permanent crown, it doesn't fit...so guess what happens, they have to go another 4 weeks with a temp because a new permanent one has to be made.

Just thought I'd share that in case it pops off again, make sure you call again and get it put back on!!!

oh wow get me started on the dentist. sometimes certain dentist I feel are trying to milk what they can get from insurance and the patient. Now I have had 4 crowns placed in 5 years. the latest one causes me more pain then no tooth being there on a molar the other side has no tooth beacuse the dentist said it will cost 5000 dollars to place a permanant bridge there since on one visit he depleted all 1500 dollars on our insurance. Completley crazy.

IT POPPED OFF AGAIN!!! I'm pretty sure God was telling me NOT to eat that brownie :) :)

I think I will pick up some fixadent until the real crown comes in; I think the dentist is closed this week for Passover.

It doesn't hurt, but obviously needs to be attended to.
