Dollar Store Poncho ?

I've seen lots of hints suggesting Dollar Store ponchos to carry around. Our dollar store has two different kinds - the thin plastic ones that fold up super small, and some heavier plastic (PVC, I believe ones). The heavier ones look like they might last better, but they'd be heavier and hotter. There were also some cute child-sized PVC ones with Pooh on them, which is what I think we'll get for the kids. Which ones should I get for us? We're traveling next week, so I don't expect it to be super hot.

Thanks!

For a dollar each I would get both and see how the weather goes (I already did this). I plan on keepig the smallest on me no matter what, and the heavier if the weather is predicted bad for the day. The unused ones will just stay in the suitcase for the next trip!

We used the thin ones on our last trip - it poured so bad that they didn't hold up. We ended up buying WDW ones anyway.

So I agree with racheljessicasara - get both so you'll be ok no matter what. :)

hey-
well, check the weather before you go, and if it says thunderstorms and heavy rain, buy the thick ones. If it looks sunny, and just a chance for quick shower, go with the thin ponchos. You can use them for Splash Mt., Kali River Rapids, etc. i hope i helped! =)

We used the thin ones in September and they worked great. Even with the thin ones we were hot. The only bad thing though was that one got stuck in the wheel of our stroller and we still can't get the plastic out:)

Ditto, thin ones ripped so easily and we bought WDW ones. This was Sept 06

We had the same issue with the Target ponchos in October. The hoods wouldn't stay up without being held there, which let rain run down our arms and into our shirts, lol. Worse, I was wearing capris and they poncho stuck to me and let all of the water run straight down my legs. I ended up soaked from my thighs down. DH bought WDW ponchos for us and it was totally worth the few extra bucks, plus 3 out of 4 ponchos survived and will join us again in April!

We weren't caught in a downpour, but it was more than a sprinkle for certain. Enough rain that I wouldn't be out in it anywhere other than WDW!

I found the dollar store ponchos (2 in a bag for $1) to be just too flimsy. I had gotten other ones I think at Walmart that were more expensive (I can't remember how much) but were so much sturdier - if fact we have used them several times, dried them out and have folded them back up and put them back in the plastic carrier to use again and again. I couldn't have done that with the flimsy ones. It think for this trip I am going to look for 3 more (for me, DH, and DS) of the sturdy ones so that if one set is drying out in the hotel I will still have one for each of us.

JMO just get the ones in the park, the dollar store ones I think are a waste of a $1 they are super thin and cheap. We had the $1 ones and used them once threw them away and bought the WDW ponchos at least you can fold them up and put them back in your backpack. We are going in June and will be taking our Disney Ponchos with us, so for us it was worth it.

I haven't even seen them here at our $ stores and we have a few of them around.

Last year I bought my girls cute Dora raincoats (they are similar to poncho type) so they can use them so I just need to get one for myself and my local Walmart didn't have any.

Maybe closer to the summertime? :confused3

I agree. The Disney one's seem to last a pretty long time, I'm still using mine from July 2003 so that's 9 trips...

We have the WDW ones that have survived 4 trips and are about embark on their 5th trip this summer. Ours are the old yellow ones.

If it's cold and going to be rainy much of the day, the heavier ones or Disney ones are best. If it's hot, then definitely the lighter ones because you bake in the heavier ones. The Disney ones are also so bulky to carry around on the "just in case it rains" days. The 2 for $1 ones are wonderful for that purpose. We almost always carry them just in case and they take up almost no space. We also use them on the water rides and then pass them on to someone else, so we don't bother repacking them.

I think the "official" WDW ponchos have gotten thinner - the material they're made from isn't as nice as in years past (I bought one in October 2007). Not much different than the cheap Target camping section ponchos. When the material is too thin, the ponchos get very "clingy" and uncomfortable, and make you feel hotter.

I like the cheap Target ponchos to tuck into a purse or fanny pack "in case of emergency", but also plan to bring a sturdier poncho on my next trip as well. I got one on clearance at Target - it's an Eddie Bauer poncho and looks like it will hold up really well. It's made of a sturdier material and looks like it won't cling to the body when wet (like the most recent WDW ponchos do).

Always check the section for hunting, they have great quality ponchos. At WalMart that is.

We do the same thing, I buy a 4 pk at the dollar store and we carry it every day in the park just in case. We always pull them out for the rapids and then give them to the people in line on the way out.(You know, there is always that guy who had no idea, looking at you in horror because your soaking wet! :thumbsup2 )I have heavier ponchos that I bought at Walmart in our suitcase and if rain is forcast I will put them in my daypack and take them into the park.

We are using ours from 1996 and 2000, we have yellow one and the clear. :lmao: Last year we didn't get to use them on our 10 day trip in august:guilty: . No rain...
