birthday ideas and welcome home

I posted this in the welcome thread and got no responses. I need some ideas. My brother-in-law is overseas in Iraq. He is coming home for a visit in April before he has to return...in the Navy they call it shore leave, I'm not sure what the Marines call it. During part of his two weeks, he and his family are spending a week in Disney. Their boys' birthdays are at the end of March (11 and 13) so I thought about just giving them Disney Dollars that they could spend at the park. Their daughter will be turning 4 while they are there at Disney. I would like to have something in their room that welcomes my brother-in-law back or some other idea that says welcome back, we miss you and we are proud of you. Any ideas for something Disney for the 4yo that would be special while she is there??? I need some creative ideas. Plus, how do you get Disney dollars? We have no Disney stores closer than 2 and a half hours away.

Off Topic . . .

1) While at WDW, recommend he spend a day at Sea World and Busch Gardens.
2) He and three direct family dependents can get in FREE.
3) Do a Google search under "hero salute" (do not use spaces).


NOTE: I personally think this is a GREAT way to salute and thank our troops. I only wish WDW would do something like this. The military discount at WDW is almost pitiful, especially to an enlisted person with a family. As a side note, we were at Sea World last week. During the Shamu show, they ask veterans to stand and they are recognized/thanked. The audience clapped for at least five minutes. I still get teary eyed thinking about this.

Maybe order a cake and have it sent to their room? You could also have it delivered for one of their dinners. There is a sticky in Dining that tells all about ordering custom cakes...

Another suggestion is to pick out a bunch of stuff on disneyshopping.com (great outlet section too), and when you ship it they will 'gift it' for you - gifts can be wrapped with bows for $4.95, plus they will include a gift card with your own personal message on it. Lots of neat stuff to buy for grown-ups and kids, even get them matching shirts to signify their trip personalized for them. I had stuff shipped last year to our resort - you just have to use the resort address as the shipping address and yours as the billing address. They were even having a $5 shipping sale when I did it. Happy shopping!

Yes in the Navy calls it shore leave, if the Marine is on a carrier or any other Navy ship it is still call shore leave that it if they are on a ship outside port. I know many are saying but it is the Marines not the Navy ;-) but the Marines are part of the Navy goes back to the British having Royal Marines on board their ships. If the Marine is on a base it just leave. I got this straight from a Marine Colonel who lives next door to me. And my son is in the Navy & DH retired from the Navy. Please tell him thanks

If they intend to go to the Hoop Dee Doo Review, be sure to tell them his is in the military. Our friend's husband came home from Iraq for three weeks and she just happened to mention it to the castmember when she was purchasing her HDDR tickets. The castmember gave them Category 1 seating (even though they were on the DDP) and they recognized him during the show!

The Shades of Green was booked solid so Disney gave them a room discount at the Port Orleans resort.

The dollar store has lots of disney things for little ones, and don't forget the glow necklaces ( you can never have enought of those). You could make your own basket or treasure box and send down to the hotel early, so it would be there waiting for them. And don't forget Mom maybe some bubble bath or just something just for her.

For a welcome back gift...you can order a 30 X 30 foot vinyl sign that has welcome home on it..it can be personalized as well from serviceflags.com. They could probably ship it to the resort to have it waiting. We are hoping to use our sign next month when my husband comes home from his tour in Iraq! Thank you to your brother-in-law and also his family for his service to our country.
