Food in checked luggage

I was wondering if anyone can tell me if you can bring boxes of granola bars or fruit bars in your checked luggage. Thought I could do that and then have something the kids could take to the parks to snack on.
Thanks for any advice.

You certainly can pack foodstuffs in your checked baggage. It saves a ton of money (I like a light breakfast to start the day) and it makes a free spot on the return trip for my new trinkets that I inevitably buy at WDW!:goodvibes

Now that I think about it, I wonder if flights between Canada/USA have different rules?

Yes you can pack food in your check luggage. We do it all the time. It saves tons of money and we get what we like. We take granola bars, crackers, fruit bars, bread, peanut butter, chips and other stuff. Just be advised if you take anything in a can they will open your luggage and go through it. That happened to us both times we took a can good in our checked luggage.

where are you flying out of TO or Buffalo..we are flying out of Bflo and have been told you can pack whatever you want in your checked luggage!

Yes you can! I actually used gardengrocer.com and had some breakfast food and drinks (water milk etc) delivered to our room. It was so easy and convienant. We did end up having some left over food that I packed in checked luggage and brought home. You can take snacks on the plane too (carry-on) just no liquids. We brought goldfish, graham crackers, candy etc on the plane for the kids to have.

were going to use Garden grocer...how did it work for getting your order to your room..do we have to stay around our room and wait for the delivery???

Yes, I am flying out of Buffalo and it's good to know that I can take stuff with me to save some money.
Thanks everyone..

We packed food in our checked luggage and in our carry-ons. We had no problems and it saved a ton of money. My only suggestion would be to avoid packing fresh fruit. I put bananas in our carry-on and even though we were careful they did not survive the trip.

This is good to know. Thanks!

Just don't put chocolate in your checked bags. The chocolate will trigger the screening machine to think there are explosives and they will definitely open your bag.

Can you put chocolate candy bars in your carry-on? I wouldn't want to check it cause they might melt.

Yes you can put it in your carry-on because that is x-rayed. The checked bags go through some kind of machine that checks for an odor (I guess) of explosives and something in the chocolate triggers it.

We ALWAYS pack food in our checked luggage. We bring snacks and also breakfast food (oatmeal, poptarts, etc) for days when we want to grab a quick breakfast on the way out the door. We also bring fruit snacks and other kinds of snacks for he kids to eat in the parks between meals if they get hungry. :thumbsup2

I bring food with me for religious dietary reasons. I have packed: bottles of frozen milk and orange juice, boxes and bags of breakfast cereal, snacks (cookies, pastries, candy, fruit roll-ups), fruit (oranges, apples, bananas, carrots-ok, a vegetable), jars of peanut butter, bread, salami, etc. Haven't had a problem yet. I've also brought a peanutbutter sandwich on with my carry on, with no problem.

My last trip I packed chocolate for the kids I was traveling with in my carry-on and my checked luggage without a problem, nothing was opened.

"From 1 January, new security requirements now have the TSA scanning every bag for explosives. Unfortunately, their high-tech million dollar scanners can't tell the difference between a bar of chocolate, a block of cheese, a piece of soap or a lump of C4 explosive. As a result, there are very many false alerts as the bags go through the explosive detectors, and for that reason, all suitcases must be unlocked so that security people can open them up and search through them for the cheese or soap or chocolate or explosives"

That's great, just saying that it didn't happen to mine, so every bag may not set it off.

I guess it depends on whether the person running the scanner is paying attention or knows how to actually run the machine.

Am I able to pack any fruit in my checked luggage? Mostly considering apples as they won't get crushed in transit.

We also want to bring along oatmeal, granola bars, crackers, peanut butter, jam, trail mix, popcorn. From what I'm reading here, these are all OK, right?
