Lugging around a Nikon D40

Hey everyone! My fiancee and I are going in on a Nikon D40 SLR camera for each other's wedding gift. But before we do, does anyone own a camera like this? Am I going to have a hard time lugging it around? I don't like to lug stuff around. (It's why I stopped playing the cello in fifth grade.)

If you do have an SLR camera like this one, what bag do you use to carry it at WDW? (We're going for our honeymoon.) Or do you just throw it in a purse or backpack? (Well, not throw...)

Thanks,
Nate

i have the same question, but with a Canon Rebel XTi ( same idea )

I have the Canon Rebel and I bought a backpack carrier at a local photo shop. It hold all of my lenses and I use the front pocket to hold an extra diaper and shorts. I also have a stroller so that carries my bag most of the time.

I don't actually have an answer to your question...but I have a question and comment for you!

Is that you & your fiancee in the picture in your signature line? Just wondered because I wanted to tell you that picture is just absolutely adorable!! :goodvibes

We leave next week...

this is the bag I bought

http://www.ebags.com/baggallini/mes...m?modelid=47360

Its not padded at all- but has lots of compartments. I plan on taking my Canon SLR and two lens...Ill stick them (not throw LOL) into a zip loc baggie and put inside the bag. Then when I tired of carrying around the weight of the camera, Ill probably put it in a locker and just use my small point and shoot.

Yup, that is us!!

So here's my dilemma. I never carry anything into the parks. Just my wallet. If I need a special bag, I need a waterproof bag that can be stowed on most rides (I dislike lockers and the charges they bring) or some kind of purse thing for the fiancee to carry (because she usually knows what to do with a bag in the parks and will be carrying a purse anyway).

Thanks!

I have the Canon XTi we got the Lowe Pro SlingShot-200-AW , it hold 4 lens, and lots of room, built in Rain cover. we are going in april 08

I really like the Crumpler bags. I have one now and just got a Canon Powershot, so will need to upgrade to the larger model. I'm looking at the 5 Million Dollar Home to carry both the camera and digitial camcorder.

The one I have is well padded (yes, its been dropped) and waterproof (yes, been in the rain at Disney). I also read somewhere that somebody left there's out in a rainstorm and the camera remained safe. It also has an extra compartment to store the room keys, some $$, extra batteries and memory cards. At most security checkpoints at Disney, I've been asked to unzip all the compartments on bags. I like that this only has one zippered section otherwise I would get annoyed unzipping all of the little places to show there was nothing in there. Its also unisex enough that my husband will carry it.

I have a Pentax DSLR

Honestly, I carried it the whole time (Jan trip). It was either around my arm/neck, arm, or neck depending on the situation. I have a lens filter on the lens anyway so I'm not worried about scratching it.

If the camera is in a bag, the moment passes before I use it! :goodvibes

I'm not one to change lenses (yet) as I'm still learning photography so that wasn't a factor for me. I made sure that my batteries were fully charged each time we left the room so I didn't have to carry spares either.

Enjoy the camera! I had a blast with mine (and got some awesome shots)

I just got back from our trip where I carreid a Nikon D200 with lenses and extra batteries/memory. Even a speedlight flash. I use a lowepro backpack (smaller one). They are comfortable and have a chest strap to keep the showlder straps from pulling on your sholders so much. Also with a waterproof cover, it just makes it nice.

I even had enough room to roll up my goretex jacket and put in there incase of rain or wet ride. :thumbsup2

My DH takes his Nikon D70S with him everywhere. He actually feels lost if he doesn't have it. All he uses is one of those padded cases that fits snug to the camera (sorry not a camera person here so I don't know what they are really called) and the strap is still out so he can put it on his shoulder. He puts that on for the rides and if it is a water ride we just have a plastic Wal-mart bag folded up in our pockets that he slips over it. Never have had a problem.

I, like you, HATE carrying things around while in the parks. I got a Canon Rebel XT a few years ago for Christmas and took it to Disneyland just over a year ago. I took a small jansport backpack (mini size) to carry it and found it a HUGE pain to take in and out of my bag. In fact, there was one entire day where I never took it out because we met up with friends for the day and I didn't want to be a pest!

I also took it in an over-the-shoulder bag (the overland donner bag) to EAA airventure last summer. I started feeling faint and dizzy from carrying all the weight between that and water bottles etc. From that point on I decided if I bring it, I'm just going to carry it straight out and bring a ziploc to put it in for water rides...if I bring it at all.

For that reason, while I absolutely LOVE my DSLR, I'm strongly considering one of those teeny weenie Sony digital cameras to take to the parks from now on. It will fit in a pocket and I won't have to worry with lenses, tons of batteries, huge bags, etc. I just am over the carrying huge bags everywhere thing.

Yes. It's going to cost me more money, but for the photo quality, I don't find it worth it at this point. I'm not trying to step on toes, but it seems that so far, the people posting replies are the ones who don't really mind carrying bags or have a stroller to put them in. I'm in the same boat as you-I really like to carry as little as possible. I don't even carry a purse!!

If you can't get a second camera (maybe with wedding money?), I'd suggest seeing if you could borrow one from a friend or if all else fails, bring one lens and carry it around your neck with no bag so you can stick it in wife's purse for rides and such in a ziploc or something. They're sturdier than they seem. I've dropped mine a couple times (not on purpose, of course) and it's always been fine. Changing lenses is too much of a pain unless you're there for 2 weeks and have all the time in the world to set up perfect shots everywhere you go.

I have a D40, with a couple rather large lenses. It doesn't bother me to carry it, but it is heavy even with the smallest lens I have on it.

However, the D40 is probably one of the smallest/lightest, if not the smallest/lightest, of all the DSLR's out there. If you find this camera to be on the "awkward" side, you may want to consider one of the smaller digitals that are really great cameras, such as the S3IS.

I think the best advice is to go to a local shop and play with it for a while. Get a feel for what it will be like to have to carry it, pack it in and out of whatever bag you buy, etc. And, don't just concentrate on the D40, Look at the digitals as well, if size/weight is an issue.

I have an Olympus E-500 SLR and love it. yeah slr's are a pain to carry around, and hard to get around those one in a moment pics, but the quality of shots is worth it in my estimation. Having a handy point and shoot is a good option due to size, but the pic quality is a pain in the butt. Not sure if we will bring both cams to the parks, meals etc, but for sure the slr and will deal with the pain of carrying it around. However, we have 2 kids, 1 for sure in a stroller so it will be a bit easier to stow, just not sure I'd leave it around while on rides..

just ordered a vivitar 6200w, they say it is waterproof and shockproof . got it at target.com for $119 its a 6.0 megapixl expanded memory to 2 gig . will give it a test run and post results. trying a waterproof camera cause there will be a time i forget to put it in a ziploc before i get wet :cool1:

We recently bought a Nikon digital SLR camera too and want to bring it with us on our upcomng trip.

The tips posted here have been very helpful. Thank you!

I have a rebel xti and I am very excited about taking it to the parks for pictures for the our first trip. Like you I am dreading carrying it around...but in the long run I think I will be happy about it. I will also bring my point n shoot just incase I need a break one day.

You can try checking out cambags.com to see how stuff fits in various size camera bags. Your best bet is to go to a good local camera store and try em out. I have a Canon 20D and use two different Crumpler bags (looking at getting another). Finding the perfect balance for a bag is hard. You may do well to look at a messenger style bag or shoulder bag. Most backpacks take to long to get into/out of in my opinion. The bag just gives it the extra protection that I feel better with than just tossing it in a plastic baggy to keep dry.

I have a backpack camera bag that I carried around the parks last week. It had my canon rebel xti, video camera, and some extras. It was a lot to carry, but it was dd's first trip to disney and I didn't want to miss anything. I also took my small point and shoot and used it a couple of times, but couldn't get as good of pictures because the quality was not as good and because of the shutter delay. I liked the backpack because it was easy to carry.
