Has anyone rented one of those Orlando area Vacation Homes? You know, the ones that have the pool, full kitchen, multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, etc? Which company have you used and how much did it cost?? Did it work for you staying there or onsite better? We're thinking of going with a group of 6-- My DPARENTS (ages 63 and 69), me and DH (23), and my DS and DBIL (29 and 37). Is it cheaper to all stay together in one of those houses or get 3 seperate hotel rooms?? ANY advice or experience would be GREAT. :thumbsup2

We did one of these when we first started going to WDW many, many years ago. At that time it was in the Vistana community and I am sure there are many choices now. Although it was cheaper, even with 4 kids in tow, the convenience of being on Disney property outweighed the savings for us.We have always stayed on site since then. If WDW is only a part of your trip a vacation home might be a good idea, but if you are going for WDW, it's my opinion you will miss a lot if you are not on property.

For our family we use the homes. We have our own bedrooms but it is nice to have common areas where you can enjoy the time with each other.

Much cheaper to get a home/villa/condo. I've seen them as low as $700/week. We got a very nice 4BR/3ba for $900/9 nights in Davenport (Solana Resort). We got 2 rental cars for about $100 each (all adults with different schedules, made it easier).
Only thing is, you have to pay for parking at WDW each day, and that adds up, esp. with 2 cars!

we mostly rent houses when we are at WDW.
the convenience of parking at your front door (without having to take a bus & then walk forever to your room) & your own private pool a few steps away just beats any stay onsite. I just can't think that taking your own car & the time it takes to get it & drive whereever, takes more time than waiting with a bunch of tired park goers to get on these busses.
but I can see where one day I'd like to be onsite, I have visited most of the resorts( looking for sqaushed quarter machines),, but only when I have a ton of time to spend there.
& if you NEED 3 rooms or more a house is really the best $$$ saver,, I'd rather use the $$$ saved on a longer vacation.

next december we have a 6 bed/4 ba - 3400+ sq ft house for $1200 a week (we have 4 family sharing) , but I have got pricing for some under $1000, but now I am being picky with so many to choose from, my criteria has now started to include homes that do NOT have homes right behind yours, I want a view or privacy, also, a nice covered lanaii deck & seperate family room & living room, INsuites are a +.
there are sooooooooo many homes for rent you have a lot of choices, & I was really surprised that 5 & 6 bed homes are not much more than 3 & 4 bed homes.
I have even seen 3 bed condos for $59 a nite!!!! why on earth go to a generic motel ( if you aren't staying on property)

we usually search at VRBO.com

GREAT WEBSITE! Thank you!:thumbsup2

Would never stay in a hotel room again after experiencing the great benefits of renting a home. We rented in Chatham Park (most homes built in the 90's or early 2000's) and loved it. Next we're renting in Eagle Pointe in Feb. Davenport area is also supposed to be nice. The home we rented in Chatham Park was overlooking a small manmade lake with tons of wildlife that visited. Although the home to the left of us was built close by, there was a nice row of trees to offer privacy for both of us. The pool area was beautiful with a lovely fountain/greenery. It was fabulous being able to have breakfast in our kitchen each morning. Having our own bedrooms was a big plus when four would have normally shared one room/two queen beds. Ugh! Never again! Oh, the cost? It was $741.00 (inclusive of all taxes and cleaning, etc. etc.) for ten days. Even though we had to pay $100 for a rental car and $11 parking each day, it was well worth it in our opinion. We would do it again in a heartbeat.:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

Are you driving? The main advantage to staying onsite in a Disney resort for a group like yours is that you can split up and use Disney transportation. Given the differences in ages, I'd at least make sure you have two cars.

Compared to a regular offsite hotel, a house is the way to go!

Homes are great. The most popular subdivision on this board seems to be Windsor Hills. It used to be Windsor Palms, so I bet you could get a better price there. :) Both are very close to disney and have condos, townhouses, and pool homes. Be sure to check that you have the bed types you need for 3 couples.

I'll second the Chatam Park area as being very nice, quiet and yet really short drive (probably less even than standing and waiting for the bus and it's ride!).

And even though you have to pay for parking (if you don't have an AP), it's still cheaper.....using the numbers from FoggyToad:

$741 for 10 days
$100 rental car
$110 parking ($11 x 10 days)

Total: $951 for 10 days....

that's $95.10 a day for a house, everyone gets their own bedrooms, a full kitchen, a private pool, and peace and quiet! Sorry, but the only thing cheaper on site is the AllStars (if you get a deal) and they are small crowded and noisy! If you figure in that you also save $$ by having a kitchen, it probably comes up cheaper than even AllStars. We tend to do a filling breakfast at home, a late lunch in the park and then we go home for dinner many nights. By having a late lunch 1-2pm, we don't want dinner until 7pm anyway. If we are planning on night activities we go home late afternoon, rest, eat dinner and then return. For the mornings we have character breakfasts we will still come home for dinner most times. I tend to have a dinner of some kind in the crockpot (I bring a auto timer from home, like you use for lights on/off, and have the crockpot set to turn off at a certain time. If we decide not to come home after all, the food doesn't over cook, but stays warm for several hours so when I get home I put it in the fridge to reheat the next day. Gives us flexibility to stay if we really want to, and still doesn't waste the food, and I don't have to actually cook!).

We are planning a trip to DW in November 08 with family, DS,DIL and 2 grandchildren. I had been thinking about renting a vacation home but had read, on another board, they could be dreadful. This thread has certainly changed my mind. Thanks everyone, sue

We rent at least twice a year every year since 2000. I prefer houses especially in the summer because I like having my own pool!

I love the space, the comfort and the beauty of these homes. The only downfall would be the lack of housekeeping but even some companies offer that!

I am a privacy freak, which is why I like houses. I've used Florida Leisure, VRBO, and www.closesttodisney.com

Just had a house in Windsor Palms during Christmas, and already booked next trip at Emerald Island. Agree with other posts, there are so many places around there that are very close to WDW; it's worth the drive/parking to have so much more space and comfort, your own pool, kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, etc. FWIW.

We have stayed on site and enjoyed it alot but also enjoyed even more off site. Stayed at condo, windsor hills, windsor palms, westgate villas. Much better than offsite, more room, pools ect

The last three trips we have used Florida Leisure Vacation Homes. We always pick one of their executive homes and these are perfect for our needs. We love the large screen TV's, the hot tubs and the last home we had had a great view of a small lake with a fountain. The house was on a gated community - Cumbrian Lakes.

I still dream about that house and will definitely be booking it again for our late Summer trip this year.
