Anybody here collect Disney records?

I recently bought a Pinocchio Record "book". The nicely-illusrated book originally had three records in sleeves but only one survives. The label is RCA Victor. The book itself is in fairly good, but used shape. The record is an old, slightly thick 33 1/3rpm (it is thicker and heavier compared to the thinner 33 1/3 records of the '60s & '70s).
The front is so cute...with Pinocchio and Jiminy Cricket on it.

Any ideas on if it is worth anything?

Hello agnes!- In general, old Disney records have little value, even among the few collectors. Although old theme park albums are an exception, story records are pretty common unless they are really old and first release.

VALUE- Since your edition is probably no older than the mid fifties, being 33 1/3- not 78 rpm's, and since it is missing 2 of the 3 discs, we are not talking about any serious value. I'd think maybe it is a updated revise of the original from the 40's that had beautiful artwork.

If you bought it, you must have found the art very attractive, so I know you'll enjoy just having it.

The artwork is very sweet. I would have to investigate when Disney was releasing its recordings on RCA Victor as opposed to the later proprietary Buena Vista Records, that might help me to get a timeframe.
OMG - I just took another look at it and I think the disc is a 78!!! I had just assumed it was a 33 1/3, but I don't think it is! THAT is why the disc is so much thicker. An earlier child's disc might fit with the other albums in that box, the kids stuff looked older than the '60s Andre Kostelanitz (sp?) I saw.

I wish all three records had been in the book, but the price was certainly right.

The only original I've ever seen has a large reddish orange disc on the front cover artwork, with Pinocchio one the right and JC on the left of the disc. Does yours have that disc? What is the diameter of the remaining record?

Yes, it has that orange/red disc, but it is not actually on the front cover itself. The cover is a cut-out that frames the orange disc, with Pinocchio on the right and Jiminy Cricket on the left. The orange/red disc is printed on the first page/record sleeve and has printed on it "Recorded from the original sound track of the Walt Disney Pro-duction, "Pinocchio."

The front cover says "Walt Disney's Pinocchio" above the cut-out and "Victor Records" below The record itself has "Victor" on the black and gold label. The record does not have "78" or "33 1/3" printed on it or etched into it and is about 10" in diameter.

Do you remember how much they were? One of the catalogs has album frames, but they are too pricey. My husband only has 3000 albums...

I don't remember because I bought them a while ago. Sorry!! I'm going to guess under $15 and closer to $10. They are black metal frames and I don't think I would have paid a lot for them. I have too many albums.

Keep an eye out for the 40% off coupons in the Sunday advertisements and buy one at a time. That will cut the costs as long as you are not in a hurry to hang them.

ETA The 3000 number just kicked in. You don't need frames........you need an addition!!!

agnes!- As far as I can tell, without actually seeing the album, you have the original 1940 issue. I do remember that the artwork inside was absolutely beautiful, so I would not want to put it in a frame.

The reason it doesn't say "78 rpm", is because it was taken for granted you knew what speed... it was the only one there was back then!

Hard to put a price on it- more than a dime! The true value is really in the art inside, very few people have turn tables that will properly play the disc. Come to think of it, not many people still own turntables at all anymore. A record collector would want the records, but a Disney fan will be happy just to see the art.

I looked your record up in "The Golden Age of Walt Disney Records 1933-1998" by R. Michael Murray. This is what the description reads:

Victor P-18 "Pinocchio" recorded January 19, 1940, released in February 1940; MST (stereo); three record set; 78 rpm; cover notes: "Recorded from the original sound track of the Walt Disney Production , Pinocchio"; this was the first use of the term "original sound track"; individual records numbered 26477, 26478, and 26479.

First issue: Light blue, die-cut front cover with eight color picture panels on the inner jacket and sleeves; internal sleeve artwork is beautiful; initially sold for $2.00
Value (Mint Minus condition/NM) $150.00

Second issue: Same cover picture but it is not die-cut; without internal pictures; the same cover picture was used when it was later reissued as RCA Y-349
Value (Mint Minus condition/NM) $75.00

Keep in mind that Mint Minus condition means that all the records are present; there are no marks on the records, cover or sleeves, no split seams and only a few visible scratches that do not affect playback.

Regardless, it sounds as though you have a great find! If you have any other questions about Disney music, just ask. The book I referenced above is the best source I have found for Disney records.

Well, then, I have the First Issue. Unfortuanetly the condition is probably only fair, with the one record present and the book itself being somewhat worn.

Still it's very sweet and I think I got my 10 cents worth.

Does anyone know much about the Disneyland Golden Book Record set? Are they worth much if anything? I have a set in a yellow box with 20 book/records (45rpm)...the box has all the golden book characters on it. Just wondering if it is valuable or not. Ideas?

Agnes as a record collector I can tell you that the mint value of a record is dramatically reduced by a lesser condition. Very good (VG) is about 50% of the mint value, Good (G) maybe 25-30%, Fair (F) probably less than 20%.
As others have said, the coolest part of the old Disney records is the art and just the way they look. The music on the discs is probably available on CD, so it's more of a conversation piece than anything. I have some Disney albums that are just fun to look at. If I want to listen, I break out the CDs.

As for album frames: I couldn't find them in stores when I was decorating a "Vintage Disney" bathroom for my many old albums. I found a seller on EBay who had them at a great price. You can do a search for them and compare prices.
