getting lost dropping off rental car?

I read something on a trip report and now I'm worried! The person said that it's easy to make a wrong turn going from the port (where he dropped off his family) to Budget, and if you make a wrong turn, you are on your way to Orlando, and it's difficult to turn around!

We planned on DH dropping us off at the port, and sad to say, I am the navigator of the family, he takes wrong turns all the time and then is too stubborn to ask for direction and just keeps on going! I am worried that he will drop us off at the port and miss the exit for Budget.

We are coming in Friday and I am wondering if there is a way to drive by the port and do a "test run" for rental car drop off, or is it all closed up?

Hmmm..

If you do bypass the port and keep heading for Orlando, it is hard to turn a round, however, I don't think it is easy to make that mistake.

I would definitely do the dry run. We did it just for fun, and to see the other ships.

Just watch the signs and you will be fine. We've done a rental car many, many times without incident, and goodness knows we're not the most directionally savvy people!! But that area is pretty well marked with signs since the rental car places are on the main drag and so many people are heading to the port.

(Not saying this is you)

But people who don't pay attention to signs and try to change 4 lanes at the last minute to get to their exit.

<ok rant off>

It's pretty easy. Just pay attention to the signs. they mark where you want to go prety easy. Stay in the center lanes so you dont get boxed in on the wrong side....the highwat will have both left and right exits.

Remember this....determining east and west...if you know your east and west you cant get lost.

TAMPA will ALWAYS be west of you.........
Miami will always be south.......

so you want to head east to the port, and the signs will refer to daytona and jacksonville as north if i remember.

this is DH!! It drives me insane! :scared: I would not be worried one bit if I was there to drop the rental car off with him, but I really want him to drop the kids and I plus our luggage off at the port while he returns the car. It will most likely be much easier to get on the shuttle bus if he's by himself. I am very good with directions, even in a strange city. Him? Not so much. He says he'll figure it out, but I know I'll get a call "I'm lost!" :rotfl:

OK I can understand your concern - now the same way you get off HWy 528 to go to the port, you are going the same way EXCEPT for one difference.
He will STAY ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE of the road after leaving the port, he will go over the bridge, he will go UNDER the overpass (ON THE LEFT) follow that curvy road and it will put him right back onto HWY 528 which has a straight shot to any of the rental cars - There is a huge sign that says this way toward Orlando which of course is heading West so he will notice that and have no problems - a dry run is what my DH always likes to do regardless WHERE we are going :rotfl2:
Good luck and make sure he has my cell phone number which is 321-508-2246.

Budget is so close to port..very easy drive. Your hubby won't have any problems at all. Don't worry!

You could do a virtual dry run. Try these sites:

http://maps.live.com/ - click "birds eye view" after you've zoomed into port canaveral.

http://maps.google.com/ - click "steet view" once zoomed in to "drive" along Beachline (used to be called Bee Line) and see what you'd see out your car winshield.

I just wanted to thank you for this imput - I added it to the Helpful Information thread that will help others that may also have this question.
thanks again for your imput.

I honestly don't see how anyone can make a wrong turn, there are none:rotfl: . Like Shirley said, as you head back out to 528, just stay to your left before you get to the drawbridge and it will bring you back around and merge you in. As far as heading the wrong direction and not being able to turn around I find a little hard to believe. There at least 3 exits within I would say 5 minutes of the ship. I would relax though, the signage is pretty good there
