Think I am buying the Canon S5 tomorrow

I spent most of today reading reviews of the Canon S5.......I have the CAnon A85 from a few years back and there is nothing wrong with it, I am just sick of shutter lag and want to upgrade. The S5 seems to get pretty good reviews....

I am going to look at one in the morning, I hope I am happy with the shutter speed.....then I can play with it so I am an 'expert' for our Nov trip!

Anybody out there have it? Good ? bad?

I got mine Saturday and am still playing with it. I had the S2 and decided to upgrade for the video capabilities of the S5. We are going to WDW the week after Thanksgiving and I want to be able to video the grandkids with the parades and characters.

OP, I'm sure you will love the S5. I upgraded from the A85 to the S2IS and loved the change. I thought it was quite a bit faster than the A85 but the thing I liked the most was the ZOOM!

You were not kidding, Andy!

I LOOOOOOOOVE this camera. I have not even printed a picture yet and I love it! The shutter is so fast, the only time I have seen any delay is when I first turn on the flash. Which is my only complaint so far, that you have to put the flash up yourself.

The zoom is out of this world! I can't wait to take it to Disney!

We just got back from The World on Sunday and I haven't even really had a chance to sort through the 1500+ pics I took with my S3.

Having the zoom is great, but the IS is what really rocks! I got shots I've never been able to get before, like this one at Indiana Jones:

Due to my DS11 being in a wheelchair, we're always seated at the *back* of the venues. That the pics come out this nice at full zoom under the lighting conditions of these shows makes me very happy with my S3 ... your S5 should do every bit as well!!

Hi guys, I just went into my local camera store this afternoon and this Canon is the one he recommeded to me too. I have a digital Rebel slr that is just so bulky to take around I asked for something a little smaller, and although this one is not quite as small as I'd hoped for, the smaller ones, I don't think, have what I want.

I'd be interested in what other users think too, it's a great price imo. I looked at online reviews and they didn't sound hopeful, but I also think some of those reviewers use a camera for waayyy more things than I ever would!

Read your reviews on several different sites. The one site only seemed to have so-so ratings, then another site gave it rave reviews.

oh one other negative about it. i had read how the lens cap comes off easily. 'Easily'? Ha ha. MIght as well not even have a lens cap. It is ridiculous how easy it pops off. Barely stays on at all.

We're on our way on Friday - after having the S5 only a week and 1/2! No intention of getting to fancy but I do have a question for those of you out there with more experience and more time w/ your S5. I got a 2G SD card now do you just let the camera set the "memory" size of your picture or do you go in and do it yourself? Does that even make sense? I don't plan on printing larger than 8 x 10 so what should I set it on if I do it myself?

Thanks! How did I get through the day before these boards?

I always set my pics for the highest quality. You never know when you might want to enlarge. Even with a 2 GB card you will get a decent amount of pics, unless, you plan on using the video feature. I have several 2 GB cards I'm planning on using for just the video for our Nov. trip.

I don't generally print anything larger than 4 x 6 but I still always set my pictures for the highest quality setting, just in case.

If you plan on using it for video at all you're definitely going to need more memory (memory is cheap these days, I always recommend having at least one or two extra memory cards as backup even for someone not using the video function, I won't say how many memory cards I have ).

I'm surprised that they haven't done anything about this yet. It has been a complaint since the S1 IS I believe. That was one reason I bought the adapter for the camera so that when it is turned off, the adapter barrel is still protecting the lens from getting scratched. Of course if something were to get down into the barrel, there could still be a problem, but I never had that happen. It also allows the use of polarizing filters, UV filters, etc. Pretty useful all around.

Can you tell me about it, what it does, etc? I used to use filters on my old non digital SLR (old? 6 years?). I wonder if they'd fit this camera lens with an adapter?

Check out Lensmate's web site ... they've even got pictures of S2/S3/S5 with adapters attached.

It's just a aluminum tube that clicks onto the bayonet mount of the S2/S3/S5 and has standard filter and lens threads at the other end. It's useful for protecting the delicate lens extension mechanism from dust and damage and, of course, for attaching filters, Macro lenses, Wide Angle converter lenses or Teleconverters. I've got a couple of filters and a Raynox DCR-1540PRO (1.54x TC) and a Raynox DCR-250 (8x Macro) for my S3.

They make a 52mm and a 58mm adapter. If your older filters are either of those sizes, you should be good to go. If not, you could always use a couple of step rings.

YIKES!! Another thing for a newbie to learn about. I am going to purchase a S5 when my Overtime check comes. Why would I buy an adapter?? And if I buy one for protection will it effect my pictures?? Thanks for another lesson

I didn't buy the lensmate version of the adapter, but it is basically the same thing that I got. I think mine was just a generic brand of the lensmate that beachcamera offered at the time. Other than that, I guess I can just say "Yeah, what LPZ said!".

It is great for protection, but it does increase the overall size of the camera. It is removable, of course, but I always kept mine on.
