I bought tier cake pans at a yard sale. DD 20 & I want to try & make a tier cake for DD 11. She wanted a Castle Cake she saw at the Acme but it was to much money. She wants Vanilla cake & chocolate icing.

1) Should I use a pound cake recipe?

2) I only have 3 pans can I do it without supports?

3) What about Icing. I have a chocolate butter cream I like.

We are not trying to make a wedding cake just have some fun but not be embarrassed.

You can find everything you need at your local Michaels store. Wilton makes a variety of products that will give you great ideas on making the perfect cake.
You could make a cake from scratch using a simple sponge cake recipe. You could also use Duncan Hines. (If you tear the box wide open, there are adjustment suggestions inside printed on the box)

Assuming you bought an 8 inch round that is 3 inches deep, that pan will hold 4-6 cups of batter depending on how much you fill it! A typical cake mix will yield you 5 cups of batter. So you will need to buy several cake mixes to make a 3 level tiered cake.

Good Luck on your cake! I am sure you will do a great job. :)

All you need for support is dowels and cardboard. You cut the dowels to the same depth as the cake and then put the cardboard on top of the cake layer you put the dowels in and it lets you stake them safely with out collapsing.

You really do need some kind of support structure to keep the tiers from collapsing. If you head over to Wilton's website, there are plenty of tips and tricks as to what you would need!

I use Duncan Hines mixes for all of my cakes, but I have my own tricks to dress up a box cake mix so that it doesn't taste like a box mix...lol

There are lots of recipes, galleries with ideas, message boards with nice helpful people, and lots of articles about how to do things.

Good luck with your cake!

Can you share.

In a pinch when I only have time to decorate and not bake I have resorted to Sam's or my local grocery store and purchased a sheet cake with no frosting. Then I bring it home, cut it into the desired circle size frost and stack. I also use plastic straws....they are easier to cut then dowels.

Price wise it might be a bit more expensive that way, but sometimes time is money and baking can take some time. Also, my cake is already level and that is a good thing when making a stacked or tiered cake.

Good luck!

This is a great idea. Do I just use a straw in the middle I have 3 tiers I can use.

I use several. It depends on how heavy your cake is. Use straws in the bottom layer put your second tier on a circle of cardboard and place on the cake. I have never done more than a 2 tier, so someone else may need to help, but the straws work for the 2 tier cakes.

Duncan Hines sponge cake?

Just use white cake mix or yellow or whatever flavor you want.

I could not find a box of sponge cake I have 2 boxes white & 2 pound. I bought the wooden dowels. I also am making cupcakes in case this does not turnout well.

Sorry...I've been in class and just saw the request for my tips and tricks for a box mix.

I've gotten my ideas from the Cake Mix Doctor as well as Cake Central. The most basic...I sift the cake mix, add a small box of instant pudding, and an extra egg. Works every time! I've had folks insist that it's not a box mix and it cracks me up.

Now that you know my secret...lol...it's a good thing none of you are competing with me for business! ;)

Thanks! I'll take a picture if it turns out:goodvibes

Have you seen the cover of Wilton's yearbook this year (all over stores like Michaels and AC Moore). It is a castle cake and looks very easy to make.

DD20 did the 3 tier cake. I took a picture on DD 12 camera I have to find it & will post it.
