My DD willl turn 9 in early Nov, and I wanted to get her a really neat birthday gift. Not just clothes (she has a ton) or lip gloss, etc but something she would really remember. Hannah Montana tickets for the Nov 28 Atlanta show go on sale to the general public on Saturday. I've really thought about doing this for her, especially since I found out at the PTO meeting last night that one of the other Mom's is taking her DD for HER bday, and has invited 4 other girls to go also (not my DD though). Decent tickets are $66 each, and I would get 2, one for her and one for me. I'd love to get 3 for her to take a friend, but it's just not financially possibel right now. Not to mention that DH doesn't want to spend over $150 for tickets. She's been to a couple of concerts before so this wouldn't be totally new to her.

But, she's never been to a ballet or theatre production. I can get tickets with all the charges for $117 for 2 adults (me and DH) and 2 kids (both DD's and a friend for my 9 year old) I think she would really enjoy this too but it's over a month from her birthday to the show. If we do this, we might make it out tree decorating weekend as well as exploring downtown Atlanta a little.

I know she'd really love Hannah Montana, but I'm leaning a little more toward the Nutcraker. I think it would be a little more fun for her, since she can bring a friend along as well. Dh just says "Do whatever you want to, either way;s fine with me." What do ya'll think?

I vote for Nutcracker for a couple of reasons. First, she's never been to a ballet or theater production. I think it'd be a great experience for her and something she might really love. As she gets to be a teenager she'll probably go to lots of concerts with friends. Also, she would get to bring a friend with her to Nutcracker. It sounds like it could be a really fun evening for the family! Plus, it's so Christmasy! Your DH sounds like a great sport, I would never be able to get my DH to go to a ballet. :thumbsup2 Good luck with whatever you choose, you sound like a great mom.

I'de have to vote for Hannah Montana. She's only 9 once and next time this kind of concert comes to town it is very possible that she will have outgrown Hannah Montana. The Nutcracker is a classic and can be appreciated by children and adults of all ages.

She'll have the opportunity to see The Nutcracker every year. Not HM. However, don't count your chickens before they're hatched - tickets are HARD to get. There are threads about it on this board and on the budget board. You'll definitely want a plan B.

The Nutcracker is really beautifully done at the Fox in Atlanta.

How big of a Hannah Montana fan is she, though? If she's a HUGE fan, I think that would make a bigger impact and as a PP suggested, you could save the Nutcracker for a different year.

Honestly, I think both are great ideas! (Now I sound like your DH - LOL)

Hannah Montana. I was subjected to the Nutcracker every year when I was a kid, and I hated it!!! She'll enjoy Hannah more, and it will only come once.

I took my DD to the Nutcracker last year, and it was so nice. She loved it! She got a little squirmy, but she was only 5. She wants to go again. She does take ballet.

Now, we don't watch Hannah Montana, but I do think that if my DD had to choose between Nutcracker and anything High School Musical, she would choose HSM.

I know I didn't help you at all!:rotfl2: You really can't go wrong!

Hannah Montana. Hands down, Hannah Montana. If she 9 and like most 9 year olds she would absolutely flip out if she could go to the concert.

I do agree, though, wait and see if you can get tickets. I joined mileyworld.com to get presale tickets and the site wouldn't connect for me when tickets started selling. I ended up paying to join the stupid site and couldn't get tickets in the presale. Tickets are REALLY hard to get.

IMO she can see the Nutracker any ole' time. It's been around for years and will be around forever.

I'll admit I'm bias because DD dances in the Nutcracker every year but I have to vote for The Nutcracker. Yes, its the same very year but every year I get something different out of it. And being backstage last year, I saw how hard not only the principal dancers but the student dancers, down to the smallest mouse, work & train to give their all.
And, she can take a friend & she probably wouldn't be up quite so late.

Also, semi-off topic:

Your DH sounds like a great sport, I would never be able to get my DH to go to a ballet.

The males in my extended family go to the ballet to see DD. I think half of them almost fell asleep during the 1st half of The Nutcracker.

Oh Hannah Montana:cheer2: ! I just took my 8yr old niece and my 9yr old daughter to see Hilary Duff last weekend and all they talked about was that they couldn't wait for Hannah Montana in December! We have already seen The Nutcracker but I think if you want to be a cool Mom and have a very excited 9yr old the choice is clear!:dance3:

I think for the moment, I'm going to hold off making a decision. Since I'm out of work right now, the money is a bit of an issue at the moment, since DH's truck chose yesterday to start acting up. It's either the transmission or the timing chain, and we won't know until Friday when my Dad takes a look at it. If it is the transmission, HM won't be an option, unfortunately. Guess I'll just cross my fingers that it's not. I actually overheard DD on the phone yesterday talking to a friend about it. She said it would be sooo cool to go, but she didn't think we could afford it right now. :sad1: I don't know where she got that notion, because we're actually fine. (Or we were until the truck thing came up, DH doesn't want to touch the savings account) She's such a little worrier, great student, great big sister, that I really hope everything works out so I CAN take her. And when I find a job (anything through Christmas) I'll take them to the Nutcraker, too. Thanks for all the advice.

I hope everything works out. Sometimes, after Nut performances you can get pictures with certain cast members. Somewhere at my grandparents house I think, there's a picture of me with a mouse, the Nutcracker King & I believe a Sugarplum Fairy. Sometimes they will also sign programs after the show.

Well, DH and I sat down last noght and talked about the whole situation again. He talked to her about school and she actually told him about some of the girls in her class going to HM, and how great it would be to go. But that it was OK if she couldn't, as long as she had cake ice cream and a sleep over she would be happy. I assured her that she would always have a birthday celebration, and that you never know what's gonna happen. I did explain that HM tix were very hard to get and that they sell out quickly, just like Kenny Chesney. (He sold out in like 12 minutes for his Atlanta shows) She went to bed happy.

So DH and I talk about it, but he's still concerned because of the truck situation. I go to bed with things still up in the air. This morning he calls me around 9 am and says he slept badly last night, thinking about this whole thing. He tells me he's going to take the kids to the parade Saturday, and for me to stay home and try to get those HM tix!!:goodvibes He said sh'e such a good child, helps out so much around the house, makes good grades and that she deserves to go. And he said "This is a close to WDW as we can afford right now, so go ahead" AND that he's found a part time job on the weekends to cover Christmas, we're also going to the Nutcracker and I only need to find a job to keep be opccupied and to cover my school expenses. (Gas and books) Oh boy, he's definately earned some brownie points today!!! Maybe there will be a little "magic" for the grown ups tonight too!

Now I just have to get those tix....easier said than done. I'm already calling reinfocements to help me.

You know, those other girls may end up not going to the concert at all. The fact that the mom plans on taking 5 girls tells me she hasn't bought tickets through Ticketmaster, since you can only buy 4 at a time. So, unless she's already been able to get tickets through her personal connections, she's in the same boat as you - hoping to get them Saturday morning. Which means your DD may not be disappointed to be the only one not going, KWIM? I hope it works out for you!

tlbwiriter, I had not thought of that . I guess the Mama Bear in me was a little riled up because the same girls who are all planning on going are the ones my DD usually has sleep overs with, talks to on the phone, they all are invited to her party. I was a little upset that she wasn't invited, since they are all pretty close. I would have been more than happy to get her a ticket, since I understand that financially it may not be possible to buy tickets for everyone. But she did feel left out. That's another reason DH said to go for it.

She's already 5 foot 2, wears size 7 clothing, my shoes, and is beginning to develop, and she's getting some comments about it at school. She's very sensitive and mature for her age, and she said some of the girls are calling her Mrs. S******* (her name) and even asking if she's got her period yet, what size bra does she wear..... I think it's a little jealousy on their parts, but my DD doesn't understand why, becasue she just wants to be "normal" and is kinda embarrased about the whole thing....but that's a whole 'nother thread all together:scared:

So I'm gonna do my best tomorrow and hope that I can give my girl one awesome birthday gift!!:cheer2:

I'm trying to get tix for HOTLANTA. :rotfl: Sorry, Atlanta the Areana at Gwinett Center in Dululth in November 28. Tix go on sale to the general public tomorrow at 10 am on the dot.

Yep, Hannah Montana. My girls would choose this any day over the Nutcracker even if was just me and them, even though they enjoy the Nutcracker too. I'm of the mind also that we can see the Nutcracker EVERY year (we even have the Nutcracker dvd with MaCaulay Culkin if you can believe it), and in a couple she'll be over HM. Plus, you can't stand up and scream "I love you Clara" at the top of your lungs at the ballet. :)

Have fun!!
