Disney's Magical Express -- Luggage Tag Info

We are a group of 6 people, staying in three separate rooms at our resort. Are the tages coded somehow to give the handlers a clue as to where they go?
Since you have 3 rooms, I assume you have 3 reservation numbers. Each room has a separate reservation.

A DME tag has all kinds of information pre-printed onto it, such as your name, the "master" name on the reservation (if that is you, then your name is on there twice), your reservation number, another long number, the name of your resort, a 2-letter code inside a Mickey-head, and a few barcodes. It is the barcode that is the real work-horse here.

Each tag's barcode is scanned. The barcode is, essentially, your reservation number. When the barcode is scanned, it gives DME (and eventually your resort) access to your reservation information ... that's how they know which bags to put into which rooms.
How long does it take for our bags to arrive at our resort?
Disney says to expect them to arrive in your room about 3 hours after you yourself arrive at your resort.

Are they on the bus with us?
No.

DME luggage is separated from the rest of the luggage pretty much right after it's unloaded from the aircraft. DME-tagged bags are brought to a Disney luggage sorting facility on the grounds of the airport. From there, they are loaded onto DME luggage delivery trucks. In other words, luggage handled by DME (upon arrival in Orlando) never goes near a DME bus.

The bags are scanned 5 separate times between aircraft and inside of your resort room, and the delivery trucks are tracked by GPS ... in other words, Disney knows where your bags are at all times. It's a pretty cool-sounding hi-tich system.
Our arrival in Orlando is 11AM. If we catch a bus right away, and go right to our resorts, how long do we wait for our bags to arrive? We all would like to be able to gett settled in and our bags unpacked before we start park hopping...but we don't want to be just sitting around waiting for them to arrive, either.
Well, if you land at 11 a.m., you can reasonably expect to be at our reosrt by 12 or 12:30 p.m. That means you can reasonably expect your checked luggage to be brought to your room by 3 or 3:30 p.m.

You specifically do not have to wait for your bags. They will be brought to the inside of your room whether you are in there or not.

Also, keep in mind that because you are arriving several hours before check-in time, there is a chance your rooms won't even be ready yet. In that case, if you waited to get your own luggage, you'd just have Bell Services store it for you, anyway, know what I mean? If your room isn't ready and you have all your luggage, would you wait around the resort for a few hours for the purpose of unpacking your bags? Probably not.

I know that the luggage handling provided by DME is new and strange to you, but it's just same stuff different day for Disney. They've been doing it for over 2 years now, serving probably about 4.2 MILLION guests by now (about 480 days times an average of 5,000 guests per day). There are no widespread problems. I mean, any system can't be absolutely perfect, but like I said, there are no widespread problems.

If you do choose to get your own bags, DON'T put the yellow DME tags on your bags. If you put those tags on your bags, then those bags won't be at baggage claim for you to get them. Kepp in mind that if you go to baggage claim and wait for your bags, you quite probably will delay yourself getting to your resort, as you quite probably missed the next available bus for your resort (don't worry, the buses run continually, so it's not like there won't be another one in 20 or 30 minutes or whatever).

You'll do what you feel most comfortable doing. Hopefully, with all the info you've received on this thread (and others), you can make an informed decision that you are the most comfortable with.

Hi I have a question, we are flying into Orlando November next year. It will be my first time staying at a disney hotel and therefore my first time taking the Disney Magical Express. We are staying at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, Im a bit of a rookie when it comes to yr bus service.

We are actually going over to Disney to get married. My fiance proposed to me in front of Cinderellas Castle last year.

I am disabled due to multiple sclerosis, so I will be travelling with my wheelchair. What do I have to do with that? Sorry I know nothing about this its my first time.

I am from the UK and im flying in with Virgin Atlantic.

Welcome to the DIS boards TallPrincess!! I can't give you an answer to your particular question, but if you ask over on the Disabilities board they may, probably will in fact, have some good info for you. Hope your wedding is all that you hope it will be, and that you are here on the DIS for a long time to come!!!

The big thing you'll need to do is when you make your DME reservation, let them know you will be travelling with a wheelchair. About half the motorcoaches are equipped with lifts. By notifying them, they will make sure that they have the proper equipment ready and waiting for you. :)

Thank you for yr reply Tyler.

Yes I will definitely look into that, well the airline knows that im disabled anyway so hopefully they will sort that out for me. Thank you again :)

I'm sorry if this has been posted elsewhere within the thread, but I was hoping someone could help me out in regards to the RETURN flight.

I would like to know what happens with the bags upon checking out of your hotel. Are you responsible to bring them with, or does Express handle that as well? Hoping someone can fill me in on the return flight details. Thanks! :hippie:

EDIT
OK, I think I found the answer here. Tell me if I'm wrong. The deal is, take the ME tags off when I receive them in my Disney resort room, to avoid problems from that point. Bags will be brought with me upon checkout and loaded upon the bus. Upon exiting for the flight off the bus, I will retrieve my own bags and proceed as any other flight elsewhere, correct? Magic Express' bag handling is pretty much done upon checking in to the hotel - pretty much only shuttle service getting you back to the airport after that? Sound right? Thanks for any help!

Yep, you've got it. The only thing that could be different is if you are flying on a 'participating airline'...They are Delta, JetBlue, United, Ted, Alaska, and I think AirTran and Continental....double check on that. I tend to forget the airlines if I don't fly them. But, if you are flying home on one, you will be able to check your luggage right at your resort and get boarding passes issued right then and there...no having to lug your bags to, and around, the airport. There are certain rules that apply like times you can use this service (RAC) but it's pretty straightforward.
If you are not on one of those airlines, then just show up at the DME bus stop at the time they give you, your luggage will be stowed underneath the bus, you'll get on and off you go to MCO. When you get there, just head for your airline checkin counter, same as usual.

OOO - so wait! :thumbsup2 I'm flying United, so that means, when i get to the airpot, there's no need for me to do anything except check-in? My bags will be taken from the bus back to the plane? That kicks butt. If I'm understanding wrong, please correct me! That's really great though if that's correct!! :cheer2:

Hey--just a question:

I just booked flights for my trip in 2 weeks (I was waiting to see if prices went down) and called to give my flight info for ME. The CM said I didn't need any yellow luggage tags because I could just give my airline luggage tags to the ME desk and they could get the luggage with those. Currently, I have no booklet, vouchers, or tags.

Is it ok that I don't have any of these things? I'm wondering because in the past, when they hadn't sent my tags, or had sent them incorrectly, they FedEx'd my ME stuff to me so I would get it in time. This time, it appears that I don't need to physically have any of it, as long as the reservation is in the computer. I just need assurance that I didn't get the CM who had just taken his valium before I called.

Thanks for any info!

Your Disney’s Magical Express reservation has been made; however, you may not receive your Disney’s Magical
Express booklet with luggage tags prior to departure for Orlando. Please be assured that you will still be able to
utilize the service and receive the same seamless experience.
Once you arrive at Orlando International Airport, you have two options:
1) You can pick up your luggage at baggage claim and proceed directly to the Disney
Welcome Center. You will be responsible for taking your luggage with you on the
motor coach.
2) Or you may proceed directly to the Disney Welcome Center. You do not need to claim
your luggage. Disney will gather all of your information and collect your luggage for
you and then deliver it to your resort room.
IMPORTANT: Please pack any valuables, medications or anything needed immediately upon arrival into Orlando in
a carry-on bag.
Arrival at Orlando International Airport. Upon arrival, please take the tram from your gate to the main Terminal
and proceed to the Disney Welcome Center which is located on the B Side on Level 1 and bypass baggage claim.
If you arrive on the A Side, please proceed to the B Side before taking the elevator or escalator down to Level 1.
You may follow the airport signs to Ground Transportation.
At the Disney Welcome Center, please present your airline baggage claim checks to the Disney representative
to confirm the number of bags* checked as well as your return flight information. You will then board a
complimentary motor coach that will take you to your resort. Your motor coach may make up to 3 stops before
arriving at your resort.
Luggage delivery to the resort. Your luggage will be claimed at the airport and delivered to your room. Your
luggage may take up to 3 hours after you check-in to be delivered. You do not need to be in your room to receive
your luggage. Please note if you take your luggage on the motor coach it will not automatically be delivered to
your room.
Returning home. You will receive a Transportation Notice the day prior to check-out advising you of your motor
coach pick-up time and other general information. Your motor coach pick-up time is based on your
flight departure and will be approximately 3 hours prior to that time to allow for multiple stops by
the motor coaches.
Resort Airline Check-In Service. Upon departure, you may take advantage of Disney’s
complimentary Resort Airline Check-In Service for participating airlines. You can check
your luggage and receive your airline boarding pass at your Disney resort so there is
no need to check-in at the airport.

They're correct that you don't need any of that stuff (as long as you have a reservation).

But it would feel better to have it, right? Call DME again and maybe you'll get a CM who wants to help. 866-599-0951

And yet another vote for trusting DME. I believe they basically shipped out the packets/yellow tags via FedEx if they had made a mistake, not if the guest booked to closely. Their fault, they'll try to make it right. I wouldn't worry about it. Hold onto your baggage receipts, give them to the DME CM at the checkin desk, also try to give them a description of your bags. I like to make mine stand out so they are easier to identify. You should have no problem.

Soo...I neurotically called the Magical Express people just to verify that it was all copacetic. The conversation:

Me: ...the Disney people told me that it was OK that I don't have any tags/booklet/vouchers as long as they have my flight information.

ME CM: Oh, I can't believe they told you that. Wait, no, I do believe it.

So she checked in the computer and none of my information was there. I don't know whether it would have made it over eventually, but she took my flight numbers anyway, and said she would mail out my stuff. I still don't know whether it would have worked ok without it (I suspect it would,) but in any case it's a little more comforting to know that ME at least knows I'm coming. Now we'll see if anything gets delivered.

But it would feel better to have it, right? Call DME again and maybe you'll get a CM who wants to help. 866-599-0951

Ironically, I called them using this number, and then looked down at my cell phone to see that I had apparently already labeled and saved it to my directory from past trips, and then promptly forgotten about it.

Thanks for all the help!

Update: 9/14--received the booklet/tags today. Woo! Little more than a week left!

the magical express bus?

We didn't receive the yellow tag, and don't think we want to wait the three hours for our luggage.

Thanks

Should I call Disney if I haven't got my my yellow tags yet? I got my confirmation a couple days ago with all my vouchers and my Disney world travel tags (hard plastic with a loop to put on a zipper...it has a picture of the castle on the front and lines for my address on the back...I know this isn't the tags but should the yellow tags been included in this package?

Yes, you can bring your luggage with you to the bus. It will be stowed underneath the bus. But, be aware, if you do it this way, the bus driver will be looking for a tip. Anytime anyone 'touches' those bags, they assume they will be tipped.

What you got has nothing to do with DME. That is part of your package reservation. DME info packets, with yellow luggage tags, are sent directly from DME/printer. I would call DME directly to make sure they have your reservation on file.

So let me get this straight....

We are flying home on Airtran. At CSR we can check in for our flight and also give them our luggage to check in as well? So when DME takes us to the airport all we have to do is go directly through security and to our gate? We would not have to go to the check in counter at all?

If so...that is awesome! Sure beats having to stand in those long lines at check in kiosks. Guess that's why "participating airlines" are considered a "perk", huh?

So I'm guessing CSR gives us our boarding passes right? In other words it is like checking in at MCO's Airtran, but really checking in at CSR.

Yes, you've got it. Unless something has changed anyway. That's why so many people can't wait for SW to join the group of 'participating' airlines!! It really is nice to just get on the bus and head right to security, rather than deal with all that luggage!!
