Use Disney Gift Cards on Cruise?

Apologies if this has been addressed somewhere -- I didn't find anything when I searched the forum.

Can Disney Gift Cards be used on the cruise, for instance for shopping or even for the deposit on a future cruise? I am asking because my daughter's band booster club is selling "scrip" (gift cards) and Disney is one of the vendors. If I'm going to spend the money anyway, I would like to use the Disney gift cards and then her band will get 7% of the gift card price. Everybody wins! :cool1:

Wow. I wonder how they got the 7%? It used to be that but for us it is now 2%. The short answer to your question is yes.

The mildly longer answer is you don't use them directly on the ship. Only your KTTW is what you use for purchases on board as well as CC. What you can do is add the value of the gift card to your OBC. You can even do this in advance by calling DCL and giving them the gift card number.

Excellent! So I take it that I could also use the OBC for a deposit on a future cruise?

MBPrincessMoM: the current scrip list I have says 7%, so I hope that is accurate. :)

I would assume then that disney dollars cannont be used in the gift shops on board also, right?

I would love to know if it is. We have a HUGE program at our school and can't get them anymore for 7%.

I called ahead and put the cards on my account. It did work. The crazy part was that they don't give you any kind of receipt when they do that so I personally kept the cards until I was certain that we had gotten the credit. If you are on board then you can go to guest services and give them the cards. What is a little crazy is that they want you to charge stuff first then give them the cards (which I understand so they don't have to give you a credit back). If your account is more than $400 on any given night they will charge that balace to the credit card you gave them. When you go with your gift cards they will reverse the other charges - not complicated but a longer answer.

Correct....they can be used towards your shipboard account, but used directly in the shops, bars, spa, etc.

Just go to guest services desk on Deck 3 and apply them to your account.

I am not sure about this.....every time I booked onboard they wanted a credit card (I just used my Disney Visa) but if you wanted to use a Disney Gift Card to use for a future booking I would not transfer it onboard credit, but ask the sales rep if you could use the actual Disney gift card for the deposit for rebooking.

I don't think you can use onboard credit to book a future cruise but ask DCL just to be sure.

I emailed the parent who is in charge of our scrip program and asked her to check on this. I'll let you know what I find out.

I will also contact DCL and find out whether and how the cards could be used for a future cruise deposit.

No, your on board credit cannot be used towards a booking of a future cruise. You do not see your booking deposit on your on board account. It goes directly to your credit card, debit card, etc...

So rather than using the gift cards to add to the onboard account, I guess I need to find out from DCL whether I can just use the gift cards directly to pay for the deposits. It seems to me that they should accept them as payment, just as they would accept cash, or a CC or debit card. If not, we'll just stick to traditional forms of payment for DCL.

Sadly, you are right; it is now only 2%. :(

I'm not sure 2% is going to be worth the hassle of trying to use the gift cards for this purpose. :confused3 I think I'll stick to buying the scrip that pays back more.

Our school uses Great Lakes Scrip and they have Dsiney listed for 2%. But for a school every bit helps!

Oh, absolutely and we are going to spend the $$ anyway so the band may as well benefit, too. I'm a little surprised, though, that Disney slashed their contribution from 7% to 2%.

I am not surprised they cut the percentage. I think our school bought $100k the first month it was offered (we're not far from DL). It was great while it lasted. 2% doesn't add up as fast but it does count. To make it easier you might have them by you $1k card (or however many). I beats having $25s or $100s.
