For those who get motion sickness - advice?

Ok - never been cruising but I am prone to motion sickness here and there. To be on the safe side I have regular dramamine, less drowsy dramamine, bonine and my doc gave me a prescription for the patches (yes I am coming fully prepared for this - cut me any day (i.e. surgery) but nausea - ugh).

For the patch do you folks suggest I wait till I actually start to get sick or should I take it before? Same with the bonine (never taken that before)?

Thx,
Anjelica

Sadly, this is a question for which the solution will vary from person to person.

My motion sickness occurs primarily when I'm reading in the car, riding in the back seat of a car, and on slow moving boats. I took EVERYTHING with me on our 4-night Wonder cruise a couple of weeks ago. Ginger tablets, candied ginger, ginger Altoids, Dramamine, Bonine, patches, Sea Bands. . . you name it.

I ended up starting Bonine (25mg meclizine--same as less-drowsy Dramamine) the Saturday before embarkation, then taking it every morning of our trip. I felt the boat move, but I never felt nauseated. For me, that was plenty.

Again, YMMV. This is only what worked for me!

I believe with any anit-motion sickness medication it works best before you actually get motion sickness. It is not as effective after the fact.

I used the SeaBands on my only cruise and I use them when flying. I've had no issues with motion sickness. Each person is different.

After seeing a stomach churning myth busters episode, my DSs asked for ginger capsules. They took some and they gave it a thumbs up

Ginger capsules are just ginger root - it is a dietary supplement, not an FDA regulated drug so you probably won't get an exact answer for the "give to children" question.

There are ginger pops but I don't know about a liquid for those who can't swallow capsules. It definitely has a taste so you could mix the capsule contents with ice cream on a practical level...

Can you give ginger capsules to children? How young?

i have a box of ginger in front of me. it is Gravol brand. it says ' directions: adutls and children 12 years and over, take 2 lozenges every 4 hours 1 to 3 times a day. do not exceed 6 luzenges a day. for the prevention of motion sickness take 2 lozenges at least 30 minutes before departure.'

the medicinal ingredients are: each lozenge containes giner root (zinibar officinate)(extract1:25)....500 mg (20 mg of lizuid extract equivalent to 500 mg ginger dried root)

if you can understand what the ingredients means, good for you. to me it just says 100% pure ginger:confused3
you may be able to give them to younger children, they may just be being caustios, just check with your doctor.
good luck

forgot to add, these are soft chewable lozenges.:surfweb:

Bonine works well for me:thumbsup2 I've had good results taking one pill the morning of embarking and one later in the day if needed. Also one each morning.

Someone posted a link a while back for drug interactions and it showed that ginger would interact with aspirin and similar products.

Ginger-ale should be fine for young kids though.

Bonine also has a formulation for kids, not sure how young it goes though:confused3

Good luck !!

I am prone to seasickness and I take one dramamine every day just to be on the safe side and have never had a problem on the ship. No queasy stomach or anything.

I take one bonine every day at 4pm and do not have any problems. On my last cruise (another cruise line in July, Western itinerary) the waters were soooo smooth that there were no waves. didn't need any medication at all. If the seas are rough though I do two bonines--no drowsiness.

Try everything at home before you go as you don't want to bring medication that puts you to sleep.

Just check with your doctor before taking ginger. It literally can be fatal to people with some health conditions. Never hurts to ask your doctor to be safe.

The most important part, I'd say, is what a few other people have said: whatever method you go with - start it *before* you get on the ship, to give it time to work.
Most anti-motion sickness methods work great at preventing, but not as hot at 'curing'...

DH was worried and took the Dramamine starting the morning of sail, before embarking - but ended up not having issues, so he stopped taking them that night with no problem... I already knew I didn't suffer from it, except when the seas are truly rough.

Just make sure to start BEFORE you get symptoms.

FYI- The meclizine is available downstairs in the nurses station for free!! (Our latest cruise being spring break 2007) My husband discovered it after he had to go down and talk with a nurse as I was very very sick on our 7 night Thanksgiving cruise in 2005-(remember hurricane Wilma? She made the water very choppy!) I have found that if I start taking the medication the morning we get on the boat and continue each day, I can usually make it through the cruise with out getting sick.
If you use the patch, I know the recommendation is that you put it on before you set sail. I used the patch on our very first cruise in 1999 and while I was only slightly sick the first night, I had a terrible reaction when I arrived home the next day and took the patch off. (Very bad vertigo and a migrane for 3 days!)
That being said, it really does matter what the waters are like and just how sensitive you are. If I am sick, it is usually the first night (I've had to have many a first nights dinner sent to our room!) and by day 2 I am much better.

Thank you for this tip. I finally found Bonine (after I checked 3 other stores) and bought the last package they had. I guess in Arizona, the stores aren't too worried about motion sickness or something!! But I'm relieved to know that if the package we have runs out - we can get more on the ship!

Hi Neighbor. Which store did you find it at? I know Walgreens has their own name for it, Walnine or something like that. :wave2:
