When you're short on pts-do you rent?

We currently have just enough points for our family but we are already considering a grand gathering and/or a longer stay a few years from now. Adding on a contract wouldn't be right for us since our point total now is just right for our typical trips.
When you need to stay longer at WDW do you rent points from another member? Do you transfer points? Just wondering what strategies are out there...

Rather than assuming the headache and heartache of making reservations, borrowing points, renting/transferring points for family members, why not let them make their own arrangements? There are some horror stories out there about people who used up three years worth of points or transferred points in only to have family members/friends cancel at the last moment.

But if you just need an extra night here or there, you could try to either get another member to make the extra night(s) reservations for you and link them or see if you can get someone to transfer points to you. Transferring in or out is a once a year process (only one per use year) so you'd have to make it worth the other member's while to do this.

If we were to plan a great get-together... we would borrow points and/or pay cash if we needed to. We don't like the renting process from either end.

I am sure Deb is smiling... that is how it should be done..

I have extended trips by paying cash for Friday and/or Saturday. The times I did it, it came out to less than $7 per point, so renting from another member didn't make sense. Example - pay $320 cash or use 48 points (OKW 1 bedroom in May, 25% member cash discount).

I have the points transferred into my account. I will check with MS to see if a member discount is available on the room, but for the two times I have needed one, it has never been available. I have a reservation for this Dec that I have booked this way. This way, I am in control of the reservation. I may end up buying more points, but not right now.
