Official Birthday/Anniversary Cake thread

Thank you so much for this thread! It had given me some great ideas for my son's 3rd birthday. My problem is my husband... He doesn't feel a cake is worth the extra money because we are having a family party for him at home and a small party at his preschool. So the question is, is the small "extras" they give like a cupcake enough for a 3 year-old that is very aware of his birthday and the need for cake when having a birthday party?

He already knows we are going to Disney in October for his birthday and says we are going to have cake and he is going to make a wish. He acts out the whole thing. It is adorable! BUT I am worried that a cupcake at Chef Mickey or something else they may bring when they know it is a child's birthday may not be enough. I saw some pics of cupcakes on this thread... Was that one of those magical extras they provided or was it ordered, bought, and paid for???? Please advice! Thank you!!!!!!!!!!

It's my opinion, but I'd have to agree with your husband; for a three year old who's having two praties at home already, having a big b-day cake at Chef Mickey's might be bit of an overkill. I mean I'm sure he'd like it, but with so much going on there at the restaraunt, by the end of the day, I just don't think your son would even remeber whether or not he had a cake much less care!

This was the cupcake my sister got for her birthday from Chef Mickey's:

It was a surprise and didn't cost anything extra. They also gave her the decorative placemat. I would think that for a 3 year old the cupcake would be enough since there is lots of other food at Chef Mickey's and he might not be too hungry for cake at the end.

I think the best birthday surprise she got was at Tony's Town Square:

;) YUM!

I agree.. We will go for the cupcake AND for any other "magical extra" they may send his way!

I need help and am hoping someone on here gave give me some info...

I want to order a b-day cake as a surprise for someone (can't say who 'cause they may be reading this  ) Can someone please tell me the difference between buttercream icing and whipped cream icing? I am looking for an icing that is not sweet and one that would pair well with a strawberry filling.

I would be overly greatful :cheer2: if someone could help me out!!

Thank you

Buttercream is usually a heavier icing/frosting. Whipped cream is much lighter and not nearly as sugary. I much prefer whipped cream icing/frosting.

Buttercream frosting uses creamed/whipped butter for a base. Whipped cream uses, well, whipped cream! And yes, a buttercream will be heavier, but they could be equally as sweet I think!

For what you're looking for, I'd suggest the whipped cream icing. It's sweet but not quite as sweet as butter cream icing. However, you'll need to keep the cake in a cool place or the icing melts!

The combo of buttercream with the strawberries and custard filling was fantastic. I am getting it again in September!

jenjersnap - can you tell me more about the cake you're referring to? As far as where you ordered it, decorations and, if possible, a photo?
Thank you!

There's a pic on pg 31 of this thread, post 464. http://disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1173219&page=31

It was delivered to our room at the BC, ordered through their private dining, and made at BW Bakery. I was perfectly content with the berries and white chocolate decorations ... I personally don't have a fave character.

It was fantastic. Second best birthday cake I've ever had.

Poly private dining told me theirs will be similar. We'll see!

Ideas? My DD's 13th bday we will be having dinner at CR. We have the divers and when I went to order her cake he was a bit confused ... he said he is new to this. He told me at first all they had was the mickey cake and then after talking to the chef said that had captain hook and tinkerbell in edible art. She is a big POTC fan so I asked about that and he said he would have the lady that normally does it call me tomorrow to order the cake. Does anyone know if they can do one with Will Turner on it? I am sure she will be happy with Jack but since the new movie she likes Will a lot. Anyway has anyone gotten a cake like this at Coral Reef? Any suggestions on what to order?

Has anyone ordered from the GF Private Dining recently? I am wondering if they are still sticking to the personalize only 10" cake rule? I want to have one sent to the room for our 10th anniversary in August.... :confused3
Thanks!

I'd call the cake hotline and ask but even when some here were reporting that they could only get a 10 (or larger) personalized, others were reporting that they could get an 8 inch personalized so it could have just been dependent on the CM they got. :confused3

Hopefully, someone who's ordered one recently can chime in.

I think the brownie is from Chef Mickey's, I seem to remember reading that before.
The part about it being free or not, I have no idea.

Hope that helps some.

It is free ... contact the coral reef directly to schedule it after you have your ADR. 4075606636 is the direct line to Coral Reef. You can leave a message and someone will contact you within a pretty short amount of time.
