Local Legends.

I'm curious. Does your hometown, or state/province, or even country have a legend or two that have been passed down from generation to generation?

New Jersey itself has quite a few legends, but the legend of the Jersey Devil is the most widespread, and talked about, in my opinion. (So, I was kind of shocked when I found out that a couple TB'ers from the south never heard of it. - That might've been a blonde moment on my bealf.) Read about it here.

Anyway, discuss some legends that you've heard of or would like to share.

Like I said before, I've never heard about it. But the story is very interesting.

There's this house, downtown. It's old, and basically collapsing on itself. Long story short, there's this big long story about a murder that DID happen, and whatnot. It's actually an interesting story, but it's 1:15 and I'm not that witty right now. So I won't tell it.

But a murder did really take place in that house.

I don't think there are any legends from where I live.
My used to live in New Jersey and when she was a kid she used to play in the woods with her friends.

All the parents would tell them to make sure there home by 7:00 so the Jersey devil dont get cha.

theres a lot of stories about haunted old jails and schools her in Shreveport

then you got New Orleans, all kind of legends there

there are the voodoo people too

There's a house by Astoria Park (10 minutes out of Manhattan) that had a man in it and he kept dolls in his windows and on his lawn. Every time he killed someone, he would put a doll in front of his house and put something with it to show how he killed it (rope for hanging, knife, beating, etc.). There were three dolls that represented his wife and kids, whom he also killed. He was found dead in his house. Its mad scary and the house is still there. This was maybe 20 years ago. My parents and teachers tell us that they remember walking by the house every few days to see any new dolls.

The Hartland covered bridge, has a legend that if you hold your breath across the entire thing and make a wish, it will come true.
It's like impossible though, because the Hartland covered bridge is the longest covered bridge in the world.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, these ones are the one's that people tell me all the time. I don't belive them, but:

The funeral home in my town is suposedly haunted by a little girl in a victorian era dress. The funeral home used to be the house of my town's founder, but was moved and turned into a funeral home.

The spires of the University of Tampa are some of the most haunted places on Earth. They're blocked off and I think you could get expelled if you into them. The university is a private one and is expensive to go to. It's really beautiful, was built in like 1896, and used to be a fancy hotel. President Teddy Roosevelt stayed there.

well, the jersey devil for sure.
and most of the houses in my town are old shmancy victorian kinds, and a ton are haunted.
plus there are these historic houses from the start of my town, and those are supposedly hanuted.
and there's a ton of revolutionary war history around here. oh, i remembered a good story.
there's a road called gallow's hill, because this old tree at the end of it was used to hand prisoners during the war. tons of people have walked near the tree at night, and there's some strange mist and you can apparently hear screaming.
also, there's a cemetery they used during the war, and there are lakes around it, and people say at night they see people walking out of the lakes. they even had some scientists come and study the lakes, and they found this weird supernatural mist that couldn't be explained.
plus, my brother works at this historic hotel that was converted into a restaurant. the attic is supposedly haunted, and no one will go up there at night.

There is a house down town where you can supposedly see a ghost of a young woman in the window during winter nights.

I live near Plymouth, MA, so there are about a million pilgrim ghost stories, none of which I can remember.
