Cape May 6-13-07 Not Good

This born and raised New England family went to Cape May Cafe for the Clam Bake on Wednesday night. This was by far the worst meal I have ever had on Disney property.

First, It's a Clam Boil, not a bake. Now I knew that going in but you should advertise it properly. I have worked many years on both bakes and boils and know what it takes to make a good one!

Arrived at 6:30 for a 6:50 ADR, not seated until 7:10. second question asked was if we were on the dining plan, No, I using a CM discount and paying OOP.

Seated near the buffet, OK not the best place, but not bad either. I'm not going to take points away for that. server comes over and takes promptly takes drink order. Good Start. Now she asks where I work (she knows that I'm a CM) When I say Bus driver, she starts in on how we caused all these problems trying to get a new contract and how much money we make (NOT). This is NOT what I want to hear at dinner! (besides it was the full time drivers that were against the contract, I'm PT and under a different contract)

Drinks get delivered while we were at the buffet. The salad bar was good with a lot of choices, the ministrone soup was good but the "New England Style Clam Chowder" was not. It may have been NE style to a creole but not to a New Englander. Too many spices that don't belong and way too dark almost a grey instead of a white.

The bread selection was good with different rolls and cornbread with whipped butter.

The Clams.

I have never seen clams that small that were legal for the taking! I'm guessing that they are farm raised fresh water clams. There were two types available, Steamed in water and steamed in a buttery type garlic and tarragon liquid. Maybe that was in attempt to impart some flavor, but it is not my style of clam. DD and I go for the plain clams, corn on the cob and small red potatoes. There was a vat of drawn butter (unsalted - what???) The clams were steamed too long, were rubbery and most has come unattached from the shells meaning you got a lot of empty shells.

The mussels were OK, in two types of broth but they were overcooked as well.

As for the rest of the non-seafood selection:
The ribs were good, the chicken was dry, the prime rib was good. I will give a two thumbs up for the sausage and peppers. A good selection of veggies and potatoes etc. The food that was there was refreshed frequently but that did not help the chicken.

Come time for dessert:
Key Lime tarts, German Chocolate cake, Cheesecakes, Oreo Cookie traets, a strawberry mousse type dessert, hot apple cobbler and an assortment of cookies. Sounds good huh?

It is IF there were desserts out. When I got there, there was a bowl of very tired looking mousse and cold apple cobbler. No tarts, cheesecakes, etc. It took 5 minutes looking for a manager to get the dessert table refreshed. Once refreshed, they were tasty.

Back to our server. I guess the 18% manditory tip added to a CM's bill means she can give exceptionally poor service. She never came back to refresh my iced tea or the other drinks. I had to ask a manager to get more drinks. There were more dirty dishes on our table than I have ever had in any restaurant. She cleaned the table off once the entire meal!

When I asked for the check, it took her 20 minutes to finalize the bill so we could leave. She was more interested in cleaning and setting up more tables than to let me pay the bill. Because of this, we had to choose between Illuminations and Soarin instead of being able to do both.

Overall imperssions.
For a Disney deluxe resort, this was a bad experience. If I want the standard buffet fare, I'll go to Chef Mickeys or Crystal Palace. I went to get something different, BOMA does different well, Cape May Cafe does not.

Sorry you did not enjoy your meal. As a former NE myself (Boston raised) I am not a seafood girl but DH is from NJ and he said that is how littlenecks are where he lived, nice and small. When he goes to Bos with me he is not thrilled with the "piss clams" that are what we see as normal

We love Cape May buffet, been there a few times and found the food to be very good and plentiful....maybe you caught it on an off night?

hmmmm we had similar bad experience ....food not great ..our service was good but the folks next to us endured very poor service and when a manger was summonsed he told them it was their fault ..they should have knwon that even with a reservation they would have to wait ,,,and they should also have known its rather late for their kids to be at dinner..I was horrified ...he was nice but said the most ridiculous things...there entire meal should have been comped ..they were treated badly very un-Disneylike...

What a shame you didn't enjoy your experience. We have never tried it but I have heard mixed reviews. Thanks for taking the time to report on your meal though :)

Other than the desserts not being attended to promptly, I did not have a problem with quantity. There was more than enough food. My problem was with quality of the seafood and some of the non seafood items and with the quality of the service.

I don't think I caught an off night but I could be wrong.

It's just my opinion and take it for what it is worth. I happen to feel that BOMA is the best buffet on property, others do not. I was really hoping that Cape May Cafe would be another favorite of mine. Sadly, this is not the case for me. I thought that Donald's breakfast was bad, others have had great meals there. I like Crystal Palace, Chef Mickey's, 1900 Park Faire and Ohana, others do not. Differences of opinion is what makes the world go round.

If it works for you, Great! Your opinion is as valid as mine. I post this to give others a point of veiw that may be contrary to the masses. This way one can make an informed choice.

Everyone's opinions are welcome on the Disney Dining Review board and we thank you for yours Cranbiz....

Signed Mackey who lives on Cape Cod...I understand what you are saying comparing Cape Cod/Boston/North Shore clambakes to Disney Clambakes..

In Jersey they have little necks. In NE we have steamers. I have had both and prefer the big clams/steamers -we say on the south shore. Little necks are for eating on the half shell like oysters not for steaming. Just my opinion though.

I know just where you are coming from. Having grown up on the Eastern Shore the Cape May Clambake was a huge dissappointment for us. So bad that we will never return there again. Just my opinion.

Okay now I am wondering. I am having a breakfast at cape may. Should I be be worried. I know everything gets good and bad reviews, so I always consider that, but just wondering if anyone has any comments on breakfast. I have to add that I think if your from New England there is no other place to get seafood. Actually its one reason why we have never stayed at the yacht and a Beach club. It sounds funny but I always say "why do I WANT TO STAY AT A N.E THEMED RESORT WHEN THAT IS WHERE I AM FROM"

We went to Cape May once in '03, without a doubt worst meal ever at Disney. Even DS, who normally eats anything hated it. There's far too many other places for us to ever consider going back.:sad2:

Thanx for your review ~ It's a shame the food wasn't better.

We weren't impressed with Cape May when we went last year. Same experience as OP. Service was none existent. We were expecting better seafood. I know that we pay a premium because it's Disney, but we felt that the price was high based upon quality of food and service. Even in Texas, the seafood capital of the world you can pay $12.00 for a buffet that includes crab legs. :thumbsup2

Cranbiz, I know what you mean about the chowder. It is nothing like good real New England clam chowder. We've eaten at a restaurant on The Cape that won the Boston chowder fest so many times that they are no longer allowed to compete. And the whole thing is not what I consider a clam bake anyway.

We were there as well, 5/23-5/30. We always eat at the dinner buffet and in the past had found it to be great. DH LOVES it and insists that we eat there at least 2x during our trip. Even better when using the DDP given the crazy cost. This past trip I have to say...it was lacking. I was disappointed to find that things I enjoyed last time were not there this time. I didn't say anything though, since I have 2 small kids and it was late already.
However.....we saved our last table service for the Character Breakfast there. I figured one CB is the same as another, in terms of food. NOT SO. The breakfast at Cape May was AWFUL. Downright awful. Runny scrambled eggs, barely cooked bacon, dried out Mickey waffles, stale bagels and some hash stuff that looked like it'd been there awhile. NO french toast, no pancakes, none of my favorite pulled french toast with the cinnamon & sugar, no made-to-order omelets..... I just cannot even tell you how disappointed we were. Enough that I asked the waitress to send over a manager, who I had watched circle the restaurant dozens of times during our crappy meal. He never showed up. Freakin disappeared. I flagged down the waitress after waiting for 20 minutes. She brings back the chef. Now, I am still in full-fledge Disney spirit and in no way did I crab at this guy like I might have at home at an Outback or Longhorn. I *quite* politely tell him how we felt and get this- he says to me: "Did you ASK the waitress to see if I could make these things for you?". I tell him no, this is a buffet, I don't expect to be waited on like in a plated restaurant. What's on the buffet is there to eat, unless you have dietary issues I would assume. He proceeds to dress me down about not assuming and how I should have asked for him immediately and that he would have made us whatever we wanted. Sounds great right? Only you had to be there to see how he said all of this with a perfectly nice tone of voice, through tightly gritted teeth and a frozen face. It spoke volumes.
After getting a "what for" from the chef, I flagged down the waitress again and told her that a MANAGER needed to show up at the table PRONTO. Finally a woman comes over, (not the mgr I had seen circling the joint earlier) and I explain to her what I had tried to explain to the chef. She wasn't quite so terse with me, but she was still very....stingy...about her resolution. She grilled me about what we *did* have to eat and stated that we did eat *something* so she felt it was excessive to expect to be comped for the entire meal. She offered for us to come back for any meal and she would take 50% off the bill. Fat lot of good that does to us when we're on the DDP. Would force us to pay OOP for the meal.

Anyway, our flight didn't leave until 9pm that night, so DH insisted on going back for the dinner and getting the 50% off.

If anyone is looking to go for a great breakfast, Crystal Palace in the MK is outstanding. For dinner, we love the family-style meal at Whispering Canyon at WL. Trails End Buffet near the WL is also a SUPER value. Cheapest buffet on property and pretty good food too!

We've tried Cape May for dinner twice and we won't go back. Totally disappointing. I am from a totally landlocked state and even I can tell poor quality seafood when I see it. Two of the worst servers of our Disney experience too and we were paying OOP. Sorry to hear so many others have had similar experiences. I love everything about Beach Club except that restaurant.

I totally agree - it's all about perspective. I'm a Jersey Girl originally and did not even consider Cape May as a TS option for us because we eat really good seafood regularly "down the shore" and felt that I would be setting myself up for disappointment here.

Actually its one reason why we have never stayed at the yacht and a Beach club. It sounds funny but I always say "why do I WANT TO STAY AT A N.E THEMED RESORT WHEN THAT IS WHERE I AM FROM"

That's how I felt about the Boardwalk too. Now, granted, Disney's Boardwalk is nothing like the Jersey boardwalks are today, but since I have the whole "shore" vibe close to home, I am looking for something different when on vacation elsewhere. (So we went with AKL - can't get much more different than that!)

Are mussels and Clam the only Seafood on the Buffet?
thanks

thanks

Steamed clams and mussels, peel and eat shrimp, fish of the day (one time it was salmon and another it was fried talapia) and clam chowder

Tch, Florida and a real clam bake? Not happening! That stinks that you had such a bad experience. Come back to the cape!
