Help Me Survive The Dolphin!

Arghhh! I have to attend a conference at the Dolphin this week.

It is going to be so hard for me to be at Disney without my wife and kids! I am not going into the parks but might have dinner at the Boardwalk.

Any business travelers here who have been in the same boat? It will be hard to see families with kids going out to have fun while I am going to meetings.

Will you be able to get into Epcot to see a concert, have dinner there? I am not sure if you need to survive being cooped up all day, or survive being away from your family

I have been in meetings at Disney resorts before without being able to get out until the late afternoon. But then I went to a park (usually Epcot, it's my favorite and the one I spend the most time at). You can also bring something back from WDW to your family. Maybe something foodlike, from the Boardwalk Bakery or elsewhere (a little different than a regular souvenir).

I know how you feel. My DH does an convention in Oct. every year without us and it's VERY hard for him. We've been staying at the Swan the last few years and he refuses to stay there because there are too many memories. He actually stays in hotels we've never been to before because it's all new. Last year he stayed at the BW. But yes, once in the parks it's very hard for him because everywhere he goes there is a memory of someone or something we all share.

He just goes and has fun when his meetings are over and he calls me constantly on his cellphone so we can share what he's doing together and it makes it easier.

My husband had a conference in Orlando one time and ate at the Flying Fish Cafe. It was really crowded so he had to eat at the bar. When he came home he told me about the gorgeous blonde dentist he sat next to and chatted with all evening.

So you might want to try there.

My husband travels quite a bit, and he doesn't do the parks when he's in Orlando either. But he does like to have dinner at DD, BW, etc. when he can. But it's just not the same when you are going it alone.

He did go to DL by himself years ago. He called me from his cell phone and told me it was pretty weird walking around an amusement park by himself.

Now that our kids are a little older, I try to go with him when possible.

I'm so used to travelling by myself - I just came back from London/Paris (including a day at DLP), meeting friends sometimes, but otherwise the trip was alone. My husband can't make it to my sisters wedding in CA this July, so I'll be out there a week - doing Disneyland probably myself there too, unless I have some friends meet up with me. Hubby and I did go to Europe twice in the past couple of years, but I usually head down to the WDW parks by myself too (I'm local!)

I actually enjoy the parks alone, or with friends or family.

I tell you when I had a conference at CSR I still headed out to the parks, managed 1.5 days of time and had a blast. I was able to go on things that I wanted to, spend time roaming around and people watching. Look around for other conference attendees that enjoy Disney and hook up. If nothing else head to Boardwalk then you can roam to the other nearby resorts too.

My dh likes to go souvenier shopping alot. He likes when the ds smile when he gives them their gifts and it helps pass the time. We did go with DH once when he had a conference at the Swan and he was so busy between meetings and dinners that we never saw him. One night he got sick and just stayed in bed, we went to the parks because the ds were getting too antsy being stuck in the room. How about sending them some funny postcards with their favorite characters. Hope the time passes quickly.

Well, right now I am stuck at the airport in Hartford (BDL) with nothing to do. Delta flight 1499, with non-stop service from Hartford to Orlando has mechanical problems. They are flying in a spare part from Atlanta and we hope to depart 4.5 hours late and get to MCO at midnight. ARRGGHH! (more pirate sounds from me!)

I feel bad for the families in the gate area who are starting their Orlando vacations this way.

I really do NOT want to enjoy the parks without my wife and kids - this from the guy who in the delivery room was bawling because "we finally have a child to take to Disney World with us!". That child has been to WDW seven times in 14 years now.


I am supposed to hook up with friends from our Orlando office on Monday night at the Boardwalk or off property. Tuesday is dinner with good friends at Boma (my wife says, "Good - go have a good time, because I would not like it there!)

So, IF Delta gets me to Orlando tonight, I will do my best to have a good time and not miss my family too much.

Oh I LIKE the postcard idea! They won't arrive until after I am home but my little boy LOVES to get mail. So, if I can just find a Goofy postcard with a sports theme...

Don't know what to get as a souvenier for a 14 year old boy who is "constantly embarassed being seen with his family". Maybe ANOTHER POTC t-shirt, black of course!

You're still stuck? Don't hold your breath on taking off any time soon.

A similar problem happened to us on our return flight home from Orlando last December with Delta. There was a problem with cabin pressure, or so we were told. I wouldn't feel too confident about them getting a replacement part and putting the plane back into business tonight!

Don't be surprised if they sell you to another airline, that's what happened to us. We were flown to Raleigh-Durham, changed planes there, and it was on to Richmond from there, our final destination. At first they wanted to send us up to JFK, switch planes and then head back down to Richmond. How crazy is that? We met up with others in Richmond who were on our original flight who got re-routed through Pittsburg and Cleveland....all on another airline. None of us were all too happy, especially considering we were supposed to land in Richmond at 3:00 and it was midnight! Ofcourse, none of our luggage was at Richmond either. I'm assuming they never took the already loaded luggage off the Delta plane to re-route them to where they were supposed to go! Good luck!

Back to your question at hand. My husband has had absolutely no problem at all going to Orlando! Not even when I rag on him about going without us! The nerve!

Why not bring your family something back that's extra special. A little piece of WDW, whether it be a typical souvie, candie, jewelry (always my favorite) things along that line.

Sorry to hear your delayed Poly Pal. Any new word yet?

Yes, you will think of the family often but enjoy yourself and bring home lots of souveniers, the family will love them. When my DH goes on his annual convention he goes in Oct. and attends MNSSHP which he truly enjoys and buys us all lots of pins from the event! This is something only he does so he can enjoy that every year. He also enjoys Epcot's Food and Wine Festival which is another event only he attends so he does make the most of it and has a good time.

Going to certain rides, now that is where the memories start but he does his best.

What is good is you will meet up with some business associates so at least your not alone. My DH is always alone so that makes it tough. Hopefully we'll all be able to go someday.

Not to get off subject but right now my DH is on a business trip in Switzerland and says it's absolutely gorgeous. He's never been there before and said the view from his hotel he feels like he's in a James Bond movie and the sights are magnificent!!

He's in Switzerland for a few days and then onto France which is somewhere he has been several times but not with the family. Again....someday..

Switzerland is amazing. I spent 3 full weeks there in the 90's and had such a great time. I'd love to get back there in the near future.

My DH is in Neuchatel right now. Yes, he said it is beautiful. Even his hotel is beautiful, right on the water.

When my boys are a bit older I would love to one day travel with him.

Do you have any kids?

My DH travels alot too but usually just a week at a time which I can't stand because it seems so long so I can't imagine 3 weeks. How do you handle that? Yes, a support group sounds like a great idea!

His travels even take him to WDW every October!
