Crew members vs. cast members

If the servers and room attendants work basically room, board and tips, what do the entertainers and other non tipping crew make? Are there certain crew members employed by Disney then some by the ship's "owners"? In other threads it has been mentioned that several of the charcter handler's pull double duty as costumed characters. Are they Disney employees are not?

I am not trying to start another debate on tipping or anything of that nature. Just curious.

I've been told before that everyone on board the ship, other than spa employees, is a Disney CM, including the captain. The spa employees work for a company that runs the spas for many cruise lines, including RCCL at least.

The medical people are also employed by another company - they put in the medical bay and staff it completly independent of Disney.

I also believe that the photographers and those who work in Shutters are from an independent company.

I noticed on my last cruise that crew members wear different name badges. all disney employees where a badge with a disney logo and the others like spa & shutters wore a plain name tag

And the servers and cabin stewards also receive a salary, on top of the room, board and tips. Salary isn't much by our standards, but for many of them the salary alone is more than they would earn at home.

Shop employees, photographers, discover shopping guide, spa employees all work for an independent contractor and are not employeed by DCL. They must however maintain DCL's standards for appearance, etc.

There are some employees who live below the waterline who may never see the sun their entire contract. They usually work in the laundry and other places you never see.

I know a gentleman who was a Magician on the Disney ships during the early years of cruising. He not only did his show, he also did work in the laundry when he wasn't on stage, and his wife, who was his assistant, also did other jobs. Not sure if Disney still does this, but he was kept very busy, and from what I understand, he made a decent income from his term of employment.

The people who work in the on board shops (Mickey's Mates, Treasure Ketch, Up Beat) ARE Disney employees. The comedians, jugglers, etc.. are not employees.
