Advice for young couple

I've been looking for the same information. I'm hoping you kind knowledgeable folks can give some advice. I'm planning a trip to WDW for December(16-21). It will be my girlfriend(24) and I(25). It will be her first trip to WDW and I've hyped it up alot. I've been about 4 times. 3 times as a kid, and then Oct 2005.

I'd really like to stay on Disney property to get the magical experience enhanced. We will be driving and my budget is very limited, I'm a double-major in college. I've been looking at All Star Movies in general or somewhere off-site. I'd rather stay on Disney property and ride the shuttles to the parks.

I'll try to stop rambling. Here's my question: Would you folks recommend any of the All-Star or Pop Century Resorts for us as a young couple with no children? If not, could you kindly recommend some other options? Thanks so much in advance to anyone that helps.

What a nice guy! I am married with 3 kids and would love to remember the time my husband planned our vacation : )

I always stay on property but have never stayed at the value resorts, but my brother loves the Pop Century...he says its newest and really nice.

I would definitely recommend staying ON property at either of the resorts you mentioned. The time you are going is pretty low crowds and I think the rates are reasonable. Riding the disney transportation is enjoyable and relaxing.

Have fun! ;)

My now DW and I were in the same situation was you a few years ago (2004?), and we stayed at Pop century. It was very good value, good themeing etc.. Pop is newer, and we found it to be less noisy then the all stars. We always rented a car, so I don't know much about the bus service, but the free parking at the parks was great for staying on-site.

Staying on-site is the only way to go. It's so much easier and more relaxing. We stayed at POP once (my fiance is 28 and I'm 26) and although I didn't care for it that much (DVC snob here :headache: ) I would recommend it for a budget minded couple anyday.

If you can swing it, POR is very nice and not that much more than a value. If your budget won't allow for a mod than I would go for Pop. Off site isn't nearly as magical and then you have to deal with all the driving and stuff.

I couldn't imagine driving, we like to have a little too much fun :drinking1

So sweet! While I haven't stayed at Pop personally I think staying at that or an All-Star will be wonderful as I'm sure you two will just be happy to be there. Try to see if there are any codes out or if either of you have an AAA discount that could help you save some $$.

First I'd recommend you stay on-site as it will be much more relaxing for you to not worry about transportation to and from the parks. Let Disney take care of that for you. The buses, boats, monorail are all free.

The first resort that comes to my mind for a young couple w/o kids is Port Orleans. There is Port Orleans Riverside and Port Orleans French Quarter, one is smaller and more romantic I believe. You can take a boat to Downtown Disney/Pleasure Island which is a nice option for you. Well, I should say this used to be an option years ago and maybe somebody who has stayed there recently can confirm this. We stayed at Port Orleans (used to be Dixie Landings) before we had children and loved it there and felt it was very romantic. It is a moderate resort and if you have AAA you can get a discount on the room. Also if you can plan your trip during value season, the rates will be even lower.

We (DW and I) went to PO Riverside (used to be called Dixie Landings) last fall and loved it. I think it is slightly more geared to couples. I have heard that PO French Quarter is somewhat smaller. Each has its strengths.

This time we are bringing our 3.5 year old son and trying to save money (he would more appreciate a 3-story big wheel than a beautiful mansion and gardens). I have heard many good things about Pop, and if $$$ is a major factor I would definitely stay at a value resort. The bottom line is you end up spending relatively little time at the hotels. I think Pop has a couple advantages over the other value resorts, but I'm sure they would all fit the bill.

Oh, and you can still take a boat to DTD from both Port Orleans resorts.

Also, it depends on lenght of stay....if you are buying MYW passes check out the price of one annual pass may save you money on the hotel. Last year we spent an extra $100 on the pass and saved $600 on the hotel. We did stay in WL but you should compare prices:wizard:

Thanks so much for the replies! I think I'm settling with looking at Pop Century for price reasons. It will allow me to buy more stuff at the parks and around Christmas.

I've read about if you stay at a resort, you can go to other resorts and look around and such. Is that the case at all of them, or just ones connected by a short walk?

You can go look around at any resort. Buses from parks or DTD will take you any of the on-site resorts, or if you're driving, you can get a short term parking pass.

I don't believe you have to stay on site to look around the resorts either.

If you are a member of AAA, you can ask for a room only discount which can save you some money too. We really Liked Pop Century. Its a fun resort. You will have a great time no matter where you stay on Property. The magic is there at every resort.

You can visit any resort you want. Sometimes we like to take the monorail around to the Contemporary, Polynesian and Grand Floridian to look around. That is a great way to spend an evening and it's Free too :) The resorts are beautiful. Walk around and just enjoy.

I'd recommend Pop Century. My husband and I are in our 40s but I think the reasons we like Pop Century will also fit for you. It brings out conversation between the two of you. You can't help it. When you walk along the lake and see the signs for a "noteable" event that happened during that year, it could get a comment made like you were four years old at that time and but really remember that. Or, look at your birthyear and see what happened that year (I'm ashamed to say mine is when the first Wal Mart opened). Really explore the grounds and all the icons. You guys are too young to remember 8 track tapes but there's a giant one there. The Pac Man symbols. I honestly can't ever stay at Pop Century without constantly saying "whac-a-whacca" for most of the day.

Take time to see the shadowboxes in the lobby. You'll recognize some of the things that your grandmother or mother used. I think there's a Barry Manilow album in there that I constantly remind my husband we own its twin.

Pop Century is a great, great place to have silly fun. All Star Sports is as well with the football field. But I'd give a big edge to Pop Century.

If you really want to save money, you could borrow a tent and camp at Fort Wilderness. With AAA, it's really cheap. But, other than that, keep an eye out for codes, and do start with AAA. Don't worry about any resort not being couple friendly. Lots of people on here stay at the Values without kids. Movies and Music are both on my list of future resorts, and we definitely won't get to them until DS is in university.

if you looking for a fun high energy value where there are tons of young children go to Pop.
Movies has tons of little ones also.

If you are looking for a quieter value with fewer children than I would suggest All Star Music.

--------------------------------------------------------
All Star Music is undergoing a refurbishment of all of the rooms and is slated to be completed by June 2007.
The Calypso and Jazz buildings (1,2,9, and 10) are slated to be completed by January 1st 2007.
DH and I stayed in a refubished room last September.
I loved the new look.
The refurbished rooms even have privacy curtains by the vanity/closet area like the mods have.

Here is a photo I took: ---just click on the links.

There are more photos of the newly refurbished Jazz Inn room on Allearsnet.

All Star Music is my favorite resort. It tends to be the quietest of all the values.

DH and I enjoy the landscaping and peacefulness of All Star Music.
We enjoy relaxing by the pool (there are plenty of chairs and lounges), and the beautiful lighting at the resort by night.

I have never had the unfortunate experience of running into the any of the large
groups of teens who sometimes stay at the values on school trips.
As long as you can avoid those large groups I do not think Noise will be an issue.

*HINT if you close your bathroom door at night you might not even hear the turbo toilets.
I close my bathroom door and I don't hear them.

I love The All Star Resorts.

I am 56 years old and travel several times a year for pleasure. I often stay at 4 star hotels and motels.
So the deluxe and mod resorts are just another hotel/motel to me.
All Star is like being in the heart of the Magic and that is where I want to be.

All Star Music is my favorite. It is quieter because more couples stay there. I love staying at the Calypso building. It is closer to the pool, food court and bus stop.

Here is a site with a map of All Star Sports and All Star Music.

Scroll down. All Star Music is at the bottom of the page.
The Calypso buildings at All Star Music are #1 and #10 are nearest to the food court and bus stop.

The Calypso pool at ASMu has Donald Duck.

The buses are wonderful.

Bus rides are quite short from the ALL Stars according to PassPorter.com

All Star Buses-CBR buses---POPbuses--PO buses--- Contemporary
MK 20 min---- 20 min-----25 min------10 min---20 min(mono)
Epcot 10 min-- 15 min-----20 min------10 min---15 min
MGM 10 min----12 min-----15 min------15 min---20min
AK 10 min------20min-------15 min----15 min---20 min
DTD 15 min----20 min------20 min-----15 min---35 min

It only takes 10 minutes to get to Epcot, MGM and AK from All Stars.
MK is 20 min away. That's the same amount of time it takes on the monorail from the Contemporary.

A WORD ABOUT BUS SHARING

To me Bus Sharing at the All Stars is really a non issue.

In the mornings during Park opening hours each All Star usually has a dedicated bus.
During mid day it is usually just our stop and maybe one more on the way to the parks. On the way back sometimes it is all 3 but often Sports and Music share and Movies has it's own bus back. Each of the All Stars usually has it's own dedicated bus back from the MK.
That is a big plus. It seems like the Music bus stop usually has the shortest of the three All Star bus lines.

I guess some people who stay at POP see all 3 All Star names on the return sign of our bus stop when they head to the POP bus stop and think All Stars also has 3 stops on the way to the park.
(Even when we stop at another AS resort to load up it has not taken more than 5 minutes and we are on our way!)

The pools at The All Stars are very kid friendly.

When staying at the All Stars you can use any of the All Star pools. That means 3 main pools ,3 quiet pools and 3 kiddie pools to chose from.

The All Star Movie Fantasia pool has Mickey.

The Calypso pool at ASMU has Donald Duck.

And the Surfs up pool at All Star Sports has giant surf boards.

Here are a few pool photos.

All Star Movies Mickey Pool.

I have visited WDW more than a dozen times with the 1st time in Oct. 1971. It was brand new. I've stayed at FW, Disney Inn, a few the of Hotels on hotel Blvd., CBR and the towers at the Contemporary. I got to see the MK from my balcony at the Contemporary and I'm happy I got to experience it once. I just prefer the All Star Resorts.
The theming is pure Disney.
My last 6 visits have been at The All Stars and during the fall of 2005 when we took dd,dsil, and our grandson age 3 (at the time) for 8 nights we stayed at the All Stars Music. I thought about AKL and even though we can well afford AKL I just wanted Alex to experience the Disney Magic :wizard: at the All Stars on his first visit.
Where else can one find Donald Duck or Mickey Mouse at the pool?

Have a great time at Disney wherever you choose to stay!:wizard:

If you do have AAA and book with them for the discount, you might want to consider making a reservation well in advance as each resort designates a certain number of rooms at the AAA rate. Once they're all booked, no more discount. Just a thought.

I LOVE resort hopping and see how each one is different. Also, during that time I have heard (one of these days I'm getting there) the resorts are amazingly decorated so you'll definitely want to check them out. Something else I enjoyed that was very inexpensive (I always end up getting ice cream) is to walk along the Boardwalk area as it's very relaxing, romantic, and fun.

I took my DH on his first Disney trip at 25 :) We stayed at POFQ which is great for couples...I've never stayed anywhere else so I don't have anything to compare it too...however, I think a value resort would be fine. I'm excited to stay at POP for the first time this September. Please...don't stay offsite, especially not for your GF's first trip.

aahhh, so sweet. . .no advice on a room location but definitely hop on the monarail and the buses and see all the resorts, free. and lots of nice window shopping too and nice places to eat or just get a great cup of coffee or walk and see animals. . .oh boy, remembering when my DH planned my first trip to Disney. . .20+ years ago. . .

I and my new wife took our trip there last Decemeber and stayed at POP. You wont regret staying on the park especially if you guys decide to go to Downtown Dis to pick up some of the clubs. Only one word of warning, save up some $$ if you plan on going, 20 bux a head just to walk in the door.
