Verandah door questions...HELP!!!

I'm planning on booking a stateroom with a verandah, but I have questions about the doors...

Like...

How do they open?

Can you keep them open if you are in the room?

If you close them while on the balcony, how do you get back inside? Do they open from the outside without a key or whatever?

Nope, doesn't open from the outside! You have to jump off and hope they turn around and pick you up! Just funnin' with ya! I have been reading a lot of your posts about the couple over board and hope you know I'm just kidding!

As I recall, the door slides open and you can open it from the outside if you close it behind you. I believe it stays open unless you close it, too, or if the ship moved so that it rolled shut. But unless your cabinmates lock you out, you can get back in.

Believe me...I've already put bungi cords on my list for just that!!! Wouldn't want to slip and fall overboard... I'd just hate to end up on another ship... and I'd have to take someone else with me...or two actually, to outdo the last couple of people... Anything less than 3 people next time just won't make it onto CNN...

Yes it does... and if I keep giving my mom pina coladas...I'm sure she won't get too mad at me and lock me out...

But I once had a neighbor who used to get locked out of her condo and climbed from one deck to the other... never fell, but I'd hate to try that on a moving ship...not that she wasn't nuts enough to try...

Well, from my limited experience w/our verandah last month, I think you'd be hard pressed to get yourself locked outside. The door is quite thick & a bit heavy and has two locks on it - the first is the handle itself which is more like a door-dog-latch (or a bar switch on a pipe) which locks the door when it is parallel with the floor (horizontal) and only allows the door to open when it is vertical (rotated 90 degrees) and it does not have a spring or other mechanism to rotate back up, so unless someone inside of the room physically closes the door & lifts the handle back into place, you cannot be locked out as the door won't lock (there is not even a handle on the outside of the door that I remember). The second lock is at the top of the door & is just an additional safety precaution knob that requires you to rotate it in order to lock/unlock the ability to even use the handle/lock. (Obviously to make sure that no small children open the door, go outside & jump overboard without parental consent

Plus, I can tell that in our Cat-4, the space outside was not so big that we worried about such things - there was room for 2 deck chairs and a little table, which we spent quite a bit of time on (esp when DD was napping after spending time at CC) - definitely worth having and we never felt the door was going to close on us/lock us out, etc...

The door to the verandah is a sliding door - required a firm touch.

As the previous posters have noted, there are two locks. I got frustrated our first cruise when I did not realize the second lock was there. But now, it is a snap.

We have never had anyone locked outside. As far as I can tell, it would take a deliberate act by a person in the cabin to do that. Generally our experience was the cabin attendant did not change how the door was locked when picking up/cleaning the room. On our 2004 cruise, my FIL had the habit of napping on the verandah and he was never locked out.

Now, on to your other question about leaving the Verandah door open....in the fall/winter months there really is no problem with leaving the Verandah door open for some cool, ocean breezes and sounds....but in those spring summer months watch out...the humidity invades the room and it takes a long time to cool back down. I would suggest (and DCL requests it as well) not keeping the door open during hot weather. It get very humid, even out at sea. Believe me...nothing is worse than coming out from the shower and being hot and not being able to cool down while getting dressed for dinner.

Another bit of info for leaving the door open on your verhanda besides making the room muggy and hot...is we were informed that if the verhanda doors were left open it could and does shut off the AC in your room (something to do with the humitidy) ....thererfore maintance would have to come up to the room and fix it.

AC now that was an whole other issue for us. I could not figure that out either....am i alone on that?

I'm not planning on leaving it open for the whole time I am out there - I just think it's nice if I'm out on the verandah and my mom is sitting inside that we can converse a bit....you know....discuss dinner, spa times, favorite frozen drinks..

Our cabin had a thermostat just like at home, just set it at the temperature we wanted.

We cruised New Years, Eastern route.....it was WAY too hot and humid in St. Thomas and St. Maarten to leave the verandah door open.

I dont recall seeing any numbers on ours to set the temp...
