Heather Mills McCartney

I have worked with several leg amputees. Wearing a prosthetic can be especially fatiguing. I saw several people who were able to walk just fine in the morning, and were too fatigued in the afternoon, and used a wheel chair. There are guidelines to get these tags, and if she has one, then she has met those guidelines.

Interesting. You never know how people are going to react to things! I thought it was going to be a "good for her" article.

But who knows what Heather actually does? Does she use close-in parking all the time, or dose she only use the "disabled" parking spaces when she's hurting? I guess if a person has MS and has a sticker, they should only use it when they're having a bad day and not a good one?

As a TAB (temporarily able bodied), I'm not going to comment.

Obviously if she got a handicapped parking permit, she met the qualifications for getting one.

I have watched Dancing with the Stars though and it seems to be quite a work out for people who do not have a disability who are on it. I wonder how she will be able to handle the physical demands of the dance training/competition.

I admit that I honestly have never thought about whether people with prosthetic legs get special parking permits. If you look at the folks, for example, who run track in the para-olympics, they are obviously in much better shape than I am. I'm just going to assume that those who need the permits get them and the ones who don't need them don't use them.

This was not meant as a point on Miss H M Mc but the fact that a Disabled advocacy organisation was making these comments about a clearly disabled woman. If someone had made those comments on these boards against an unknown person with a lower leg amputation I would think there would be uproar.

The entire purpose of a handicap plate/placard on a vehicle is to get the person to whom it's issued out of the flow of traffic as quickly and safely as possible.

Based on the absence of cars, trucks, buses, etc., on the dance stage... more power to her!

You're right. I didn't look at it like that. My DS is disabled, but physically, many people make comments that they can't "tell anything is wrong." I hate this. How dare they make assumptions based on something they know nothing about. How dare they make less of a situation that they are not in. How do they know how Heather's disability affects her???? They don't!

I must say I'm surprised, and rather shocked, by the reaction of this organisation! They should be applauding her efforts despite her challenges, not pointing the finger at her. Having a disability doesn't mean you are incapable of living a 'normal' life (whatever normal is), and I would have thought an organisation for the disabled should know this more than most.

I have no idea if she meets the qualifications or not.

But Sue I am going to have to disagree with you on the blanket statement that if one gets a permit then they met the qualifications. There are too many doctors who give them out way too freely.

My dad and most of the people that he walks with have HC stickers. Yes - they are old - mostly over 80. But I just find it odd that they fight to get that handicap parking place and then go walk 2 miles for exercise.

I meant "qualified" in a different way than you took it.

I meant it more in terms of that she did what was necessary to qualify for one than a statement about whether or not she really needed one.

There are doctors who will sign the forms way too freely, some who take it very seriously and some who won't sign the forms for anyone (no matter how much the person would benefit).

Oh you would be shocked what some of the spinal cord injury community has said to me. You wouldn't believe it.

I wonder if the uproar is more about her personally rather than her disability.
Everyone loves the Beatles and looks at her as a gold digger.
So no matter what she does or doesn't do everyone hates her :-)

I think you have something there.

I got a placard a few years back after refusing one for many more years.

I have found that there are so many different degrees of disabilities. Even myself have different levels on different days.

I try to not use those spaces if there are others nearby that I can handle while others, more unable, might need.

It is difficult to know what do some days. :confused3

I will be going back to the parks this year with MY problems and the added problems of a husband who has gotten worse and needs much supervision. I am sure it appears that I am being mean to him sometimes when I have to keep him in some sort of line. People have more sympathy with a two year old child with a tantrum than a 72 year old.

Just goes to show that we cannot always know what someone else is going through and make false judgements. I even find myself doing so on occasion but am trying to do better.

I agree with the person who said that Heather is so unpopular that she is not going to be given the benefit of a doubt. I will be interested in seeing how she does on the show as I think it a showcase of what kind of person you are. I still love Paul though. (swoon):thumbsup2

Hi Sue!! Thank you for all the help you gave me last trip. It made our time a lot easier.
