Hello all,

Just wanted to drop a dime and say Hi to everybody. As you can see by the post title, I have been lurking on this site for awhile now and am this/close to diving in and becoming a DVC member. My family and I travelled to WDW last spring with some neighbors of ours who are current DVC members, and I must say we were impressed. We stayed in a 2 BR unit at OKW and LOVED it. I am contemplating the SSR offer @$86 for referrals but want to be sure that it is the right move for us. We have 3 little devils(AKA boys) ages 8,6 and 4 and would like some input on whether SSR is the way to go. They all love swimming and I forsee future trips to BWV,BW, etc... However, I think the extra 12 years that SSR has makes more sense. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated!

It's all about personal choice and finances.

Go where your heart tells you.
Did you get a chance to visit all the sites? Which did you and your family like the most?

Are finances at all a concern? Maintenance fees at SSR are lowest and point cost is still pretty low.
Point cost at Vero, Hilton Head and OKW are a bit lower, but maintenance fees a bit higher.

Again, it all goes back to personal choice.

We have stayed at SSR and if I was buying DVC for the first time now, I would definitely go for it. It gives you the 11 month booking window at a DVC on site resort where Vero and HH would not do that.

You can always add on later when AKV come on board, too! By the way Welcome to the DIS!!

I would say that unless you have a personal requirement of guaranteed availability at a particular resort, like boardwalk or BCV during the food and wine fesitival or Wilderness lodge during December, then you should be very happy with an SSR purchase. That is what we are planning also. My personal preference is the "away form it all" resorts such as OKW and SSR anyway. You will have plenty of opportunities to stay at all the DVC locations especially with some flexible and advanced planning plus you are getting a good buy-in price and the best maint fees. On top of all of that, the contract is 12 years longer and is likely to be worth more on the resale market 15 years from now vs. the other locations, in case you might need or want to sell it or change "home resorts" then.

I think that nails it pretty well. SSR is a wise choice for a first time buyer today.

I have to agree with Carol! Some people say "Buy where you want to stay!"
We looked at it this way-WE WANT TO STAY IN DISNEY WORLD!LOL! So, we went with the best deal, which was SSR. We want to try them all!

if i were you being a young family i wouldnt be thinking about anything else except ssr, as you mention to get the extra 12 years. have fun welcome to the boards. as your friend probaly told you you know all about the 11 and 7 month window.

12 extra years is money in the bank. I recently sold off about 1100 points. The resort I kept???????? You guessed it, SSR. When I want to sell 10 -15 years from now it is my guess that SSR will be selling for more than the older DVC resorts that have relatively little use years left. You have to factor that in.

Aslo I've booked almost exclusively at the 7 month window so really home resort means nothing to me. I've had great success also, never been denied my first choice.

SSR with the incentive seems like a no brainer.

I don't have enough posts to put the link to the topic "Use Year question.." however here is an easy to understand explanation provide by LisaS:

"You can make reservations at your home resort 11 months prior to your checkout date regardless of your Use Year, and at 7 months prior to checkout at the other resorts. So if you want to go in December, you can book that trip at your home resort in January no matter what Use Year you own, and you can book the January trip in February.

You need to have enough points available in the Use Year in which your trip dates fall. For example, if you had a Dec Use Year:

your Dec '06 points are valid for stays from 12/1/06 through 11/30/07
your Dec '07 points are valid for stays from 12/1/07 through 11/30/08
your Dec '08 points are valid for stays from 12/1/08 through 11/30/09
etc.

So if you want to book a stay for Dec '07 or Jan '08 you would need enough points in your '07 Use Year to "pay" for your trips because those trips fall within your '07 UY. In addition to '07UY points you can also use banked '06UY points and you can borrow from your '08UY points for both the Dec '07 and the Jan '08 stay."

Our 3 kids are just about the exact same ages as yours....and SSR is our home...we couldn't be happier! They love, love, love the pool. And there is a huge new splash area going in. And the CMs at the Community Hall have great kids' activities, etc. SSR is a great resort all around...for kids or adults w/out kids.
