DD#1 was born on Halloween so naturally we had a costume party for her first birthday. DD#2 is coming upon the big one in February. I was thinking of having a luau, but our pool still isn't complete yet.....
I don't want a "character" theme as this will all be adults....

my other option is going to WDW for the weekend.

my DD 1.5 loves Dora so that was her theme. I wanted a DISNEY theme but the princess themes are way to old for a first birthday. I wish they offered a more infant friendly line of party supplies. First birthday is very limited IMO. As for our DS 7 weeks I have already started thinking of his birthday, I am not sure what to do. We plan on having a big party but it will be cold for his birthday so we are limited to where we can have it. But I think his theme will be something Disney. My other idea was for a indoor BBQ beach party. I just need a place to throw it.

We didn't have a theme, exactly, for DS's 1st birthday. We decorated the room with primary colors, red, yellow, blue, and green - I ordered about 6 dozen balloons, plus extra helium ballons for the birthday boy. DS LOVES Elmo, so we hired and Elmo to come to the party, it was nice because 1/2 way through the Elmo turned into a clown and did face painting and balloon animals and dancing, etc. It was SO much fun.

We had his party in a private room of a restaurant and everyone loved it.

we're all mad here

My Dd 1st party was a rubber ducky theme. Her second was a strawberry short cake tea party. I made a lot of mini cakes and choc. dipped strawberries with the letter E (for Emily) written on them in pink Choc. We had tea sandwiches. All the decorations were pink and red (balloons and carnations). It was quite the affair. I didn't spend a lot of $. I did spend a lot of time on it. I go all out for the kids parties as they are my favorite people to celebrate. :goodvibes

we also did the mickey theme. we were at wdw on his actual bday, so we carried out the theme at his party at home for family and friends. my mom made the cake ... very easy ... three circles:

my mom made a small cake for ds to have ... cupcakes for ears and a small circle cake (one layer) for head

we used primary colors and "pixie dust" we brought home. enjoy your party what ever you choose!

This is something that I'm already contemplating for DD birthday. She too turns 1 in February (22nd). I ahve looked at Rubber Duckys, Pooh, Mickey, and a fun being 1 theme. Try this site for some ideas: www.birthdayexpress.com my MIL passed the catalog my way.

DS- was Winnie the Pooh. I got all of the party supplies of Pooh and the cake I had special ordered.

DD- was Disney Princesses. I did the same thing getting the matching supplies and ordering a special made cake.

For DD it was a "1st Birthday" theme. My mom and I made the same cake I had for my first birthday. DS had 2 birthday parties as we were at a beach house for his actual birthday. He had an ocean cake at the beach house and a farm theme for his big party when we got home.
Next baby will likely get the "oh,you're the third baby - are you one already?" theme! :rotfl:

DD's first birthday is in 6 weeks!!! We are going with a valentine theme - hearts, cupcakes, etc. I figure we'll do lots more whith characters when she gets older, but I wanted to keep this one pretty simple. I'm still looking for ideas though!!!

Anyone have photos??

Both my DD's first birthday theme was "teddy bears" with the age of 1 printed on everything.

After that, we theme every birthday according to what they love that year of their life.

This year:
7yr old DD - Disney Princesses
2yr old DD - Barney

We did Sesame Street, however I love the Disney theme idea. It would be great for both kids and kids at heart.

Check out Target's dollar spot. They had some great heart themed items. They had small heart shaped pans and some other stuff.

For my DS we had Winnie the Pooh theme. I had the Pooh cake pan where he is holding a #1.
For my DD we did a Care Bears theme. I found lots of 1st Birthday Care Bear items at Target for 75% off.

Mardi Gras! DD was born on Ash Wednesday (2004) so when her b-day rolled around we got out beads, masks, made jambayla (sp?), and let the adults have fun. I made cupcakes and decorated them w/ purple, gold, and green sugar. We really didn't have anything "1st Birthday" except for special order M&M's that were printed w/ "Zoe is 1" and "Zoe Rocks". Even the invites were from a party store and were Mardi Gras themed. We figured that she really won't remember the theme of her party and there were really only 4 or 5 other little kids there. Of course, I'd vote for WDW since that's what we are doing this year for her b-day. The party was too much of a family landmine so we are running away for the weekend! Good luck!

We did not want to do a character theme due to the fact that mostly adults would be in attendence. We did a "Lollipop" theme. THe invitations look like suckers and said "We've Licked The First Year" Come help **** Celebrate their first birthday and gave the date and time, etc. For party favors, we gave out those WhirliPop Suckers that we had put a sticker on that said, "Triple the Cake, Triplet the Fun, The **** Boys are turning One." It was cute. By the way, the babies are triplets. It was a cute party. I can e-mail you pics if you are interested. We painted flowere pots baby blue and painted white polka dots on them, in the pots, we put baloons and ivy and used them for centerpieces. It was a great party.

Our son's 1st birthday was Dec. 20th. We celebrated early and did a Jungle Animal theme. I got a giant monkey stuffed animal from Walmart and used it as a table centerpiece. We had lots of jungle animal mylars and other colored balloons. I bought some animal footprints and put them up the walkway to our house with a sign "It's a junge in here". We found tons of animal stuff for the goodie bags at the dollar store and put them in white bags with black stripes (zebra). I ordered animal masks for the kids to wear. Our son wore a Winnie the Pooh safari outfit - looked so cute! The cake was Madagascar from our local grocery store. We received lots of compliments on our decorations.

Our daughter's first birthday party was 3 yrs ago. We did a Ladybug theme. She wore a ladybug costume, had a ladybug cake. I found lots of garden and bug decor for the house and some ladybug mylars. It wasn't quite as easy to find stuff for this party and we didn't have kids in attendance, so it was a little more of a "grown-up" party.

We are doing butterflies and flowers since her birthday is in the spring. her first B-day will be April 5th but celebrate on April 2nd and I'm looking for a cute dress with flowers and butterflies to go with her butterfly cake and decorations I found at party City. I'm also making little cookies in the shape of butterflies and flowers (tulips).

My DD's theme was rubber ducks with primary colors and ducks floating in little ponds on the tables. It was summer, so that was easy to avoid a mess being outside.
My DS's theme was trucks and we sent invitations that said he "bulldozed through his first year. We also used yellow warning tape and red, yellow and black balloons.
Both kids loved those particular toys at the time, in fact my DD wouldn't leave the house without a duck.

The sweetpea had a puppy party for her first birthday. Mostly we used the 101 dalmations for the theme, but also brought in other puppy type things. Along with regular food, we served hot dogs too. There were kids and adults at the party. All the kids "goodie bag" were actually dog bowls that I got from the 99cent store. I also found 101 dalmation sovineer cups at the 99cent store as well. I made rice crispy treats in the shape of dog bones and instead of party hats, I made all the kids "puppy ears" to wear. Just used some elastic and fuzzy material I found at the fabric store. We had a great time.

we did a dog theme for DS. :paw: :paw: :paw: :paw:
mostly adults attending, everyone packed into our really tiny house (750 sq feet inc bathrm & bedrms!)
cutest thing: DS' cake was a shaggy dog shape complete with collar. :dog2:
(I was a cake decorator)
gift bags for DNieces 9 & 7 & godchildren, 11 & 10: plush puppies, books about dogs, dog id tags (sent away from the back of Milk Bones boxes) with their names & nicknames, cookies in the shape of dog bones :pug:
New plastic dog bowls(dollar store) set out with muchies & cookies :dog:

it wasn't as elaborate as some of the other parties here, but the large crowd packed like sardines into our tiny, undergoing re-hab, house seemed to have a good time :goodvibes

Ladybug/fairy/garden sort of them

For my oldest DD's 1st birthday (in 2002) we had the "My 1st Birthday Theme" stuff for girls. We just decorated with those things and lots of pink "stuff" ... balloons, flowers, etc. Birthday 2 was Barney, Birthday 3 was princess, Birthday 4 was a Red and Purple party.

For my youngest DD we did Minnie Mouse. It was cute, but not over done either. I figured it was more for my oldest than for the youngest. For her second birthday it was a Strawberry Shortcake party (a very simple one). This summer we'll have our first "real" little birthday party for a couple of nursery school friends.

Here is a good link with descriptions of what other people have done for parties. It has some really good ideas ... www.birthdaypartyideas.com . I used it for oldest dd's red and purple party last year. This year I am searching again ... this will be a princess party where the girls dress at princesses. She is sooooo excited!!!

Good luck ...

We had a 101 Dalmations/puppies theme for my DS. The movie must have come out on video at that time. There was a puppy cake in the Family Fun magazine for the party at home and I made choc chip cupcakes for the party at daycare.

DD#1 was rocking horses, and DD#2 was strawberry shortcake.

DD#1 will have her b-day at WDW this year so we are not having a party per say, but I guess it is as close to a theme as you can get huh? (sure costs enough)

DD#2 not sure on a theme but I know I am making a huge caterpillar cake for her. So I guess maybe some coordinating colors for plates, streamers and such.

DD 1st's was Bunnies
DS 1st's was cars, trucks, trains

the following years were Clifford, Dog x2, Winnie the Pooh, Bowling, Pottery, Gardening, Strawberry shortcake,Minnie Mouse,

Around here it is a big thing to go somewhere and pay someone else to set and clean up. Actually it seems to be cheaper in the long run since I usually make some sort of spread for all the parents that come and socialize...fun for all!!!

Have fun...

I know what you mean, for DD #1 - 3rd birthday we had her party at 1900 Park Fare and spent less than we did on her first two birthday parties and didn't have to clean up!

I would love to do it for Haley's first birthday but I am not so sure all the family would hike over to Orlando. I even thought abotu booking a 3 day DCL trip - they have Fl rates for her birthday weekend!

My 1st dd was a luau since we had recently moved from HI & it was in June so we had good weather. In HI keiki's 1st birthday is a very big deal - people make more of it then weddings I swear!! Back in the olden days not a lot of babies made it to one yr old due to illnesses so they really celebrate when babies (keiki) turns 1!! I used HI postcards for the invites which I partially wrote in Hawaiian (with the English translation for the mostly Pennsylvanian guests!!!). The cake said Happy Birthday in Hawaiian.
I had leis for the guests, Hawaiian music, blow up palm trees (we got individual pics of all the families by the palm trees which is so fun to look at - especially since everyone wore Hawaiian clothes - dd1 & myself both wore muumuus!!). I had some crafts set up for the older kids, they decorated plastic visors (I wrote their Hawaiian name on the visor in permanent pen) with foam fish and they made froot loop leis (string froot loops on dental floss to make a necklace. We had a few games, a dolphin ring toss & fish "dart" game. Most of the stuff was from orientaltrading.com. It was really fun.
My 2nd dd had her b-day about a week after we got back from WDW so of course she had a Mickey Mouse theme. I went to Home Depot & took a bunch of those Mickey head paint swatches & pulled off the Mickey heads & glued a couple on a half page of card stock with a little poem (It’s time for a party, Kate is turning one. Please say you’ll join us to celebrate the fun!) for the invite. I used more Mickey heads to tape on streamers & wrote the letters HAPPY 1st BIRTHDAY on the heads (one letter per head so it stretched pretty far & was colorful). I used Mickey colors for streamers & made a Mickey head cake similar to the one on the 1st page! SUPER EASY! It was ALL adults at that party (except for big sis) so that was about all we did!!

We had mostly adults at our party also...
ended up with a kin of baby farm animal theme..it had a gingham background.
It was so cute and fun...everyone loved it!
I had :
Sticks and Straw (pretles sticks and those potato sticks)
Pigs in a blanket (little sausages wrapped in small crescent rollls)
animal cookies/crackers
Fresh veggie "garden"
Fresh fruit "garden"

I had more but can't remember them all....

If I knew how to post pictures I would show you an invite..He had a Sweater outfit by Hartstrings on that had a cow on it and had the most adorable cow hat with ears...I used a picture of him in that with an animal border...

It was a huge hit! Have fun planning! :flower:

I have no daughters, but my first son had Sesame Street Trains (characters on a train 3D puzzle went on his cake) for his 1st bday, and 2nd son had ducks.

For 2nd bday, DS 1 had Pooh, and DS2 had frogs.

For 3rd bday, DS 1 had Candyland, and DS2 had Build A Bear/Firefighters (I bought firefighter outfits for the kids and the bears they made, it made a great group pic).

For each, I did their cakes myself, came up with games/crafts myself (but used Oriental Trading for materials), and they helped me do invitations. None were prepackaged, but I was able to find the second bday paper goods, and the ducks.........the others I used solid color paper goods. We always do a pinata that goes with the theme, for Candyland, my dh paper machied one of the characters (the gumdrop guy).

For DS2's 4th: We'll be doing Wild Animals........going to AK.

DS1 other birthdays:
Age 4: Letter N party (his name begins with N)
5: Giant party
6: Aliens
7: Golf (we did miniature)
8: Spiderman (at Universal)
9: Medieval
10: Yu-Gi-Oh
11: He wants medieval again.........I'm going to try to spin him towards maybe a chess-based (he loves the game and it can slant towards medieval battles), or Narnia

My DS 1st B-Day back in May, 1992 was a Winnie-The-Pooh Cake with three small round cakes as baloons. It uses the Wilton Character Cake Pan that I borrowed from my mother-in-law. I will never forget how long it took me to decorate that cake because of all the different colors of icing I had to mix but it looked great and it was well worth it for my baby's 1st birthday.
