View Full Version : Just a thought for those with screws, plates, wire, etc. holding your bones together

I have 3/8 guage (sp?) wire in my back. In the 80's it used to trigger security systems. However, during the 90's it never happened. Since they have now increased the sensitivity of these systems at the airports, etc. I have asked my doctor, and have received, a note explaining that I have the wire in my back and I may trigger these metal detection systems. I figure the less attention I can bring to myself and the more pro-active I am may lessen the stress for all at the airport.

Just a thought.

I fractured my right ankle 3 years ago and received several screws and one plate in my ankle. Everytime I go through those airport security systems (the last time was last December) it never caused it to go off. I am not fearing it will do it this time, but if they do go off I will show them my scares on my ankle (plus on my other ankle I have a brase due to I just sprained my ankle last week).

My wife has a metal rod in her back. It has never set off any airport scanner. However last year when we boarded the Disney Wonder it did set off their scanner. She was quite surprised, and there were a few moments where everyone was very confused trying to figure out what was going on.

My Dad had open heart surgery over 20 years again and his ribs were wired back together so he sets off the alarms all the time. He always offers to take off his shirt and show his scar but so far no one has taken him up on his offer. Since he is coming with us on a cruise in May I think I will have him get a note from the Doctor. Good suggestion Cora, thanks!

In another post I suggested that someone who was deaf carry a small card "I am deaf" that he could flash when needed to allay the fears of a security agent and also make it less likely you will be pulled aside. In this case the flash card would read "I have a metal brace from surgery" or something like that.

If you are pulled out of line, the agent should re-insert you into the same place in line when done with special inspection. Also others in line, particulary when you had announced you were returning, should let you back in even if the agent is not escorting you.
