I was at the Dollarama on St. Laurent Blvd. in Ottawa this afternoon and they had amazing Disney items. Packages of 5 Pooh rulers, packages of erasers, Mickey, Minnie, Pooh and Tigger pens with the maribu fur on top, Pooh and Princess Diaries, many different night lights and a cute Mickey stapler and office set. They were all a dollar. I picked up some for stocking stuffers and for DD to give to her piano students when we get back. Happy shopping

Do you actually think they are genuine Disney products or more likely pirated knock-offs?

The pens and night lights are real, at least I think so. The other stuff might be knock offs. The diary in particular. They were opening boxes all over the store and the Disney gift wrap was in Disney display boxes that look authentic.

It's so hard for the average consumer to tell these days. One newspaper article I read recently mentioned that if an item does not have a UPC bar code, then it is probably a knock-off -- regardless of any logos or packaging that might suggest the contrary.

Some of the items have a bar code and some don't. Good point. But knowing that most of this stuff is made in China it probably came from the same factory.

Did you notice any Cinderella/Princess items? We're decorating our daughter's room in a princess theme. Thanks.

There was a rather lengthy article about pirated goods in the Toronto Star in 2004 -- the process you have mentioned was specifically noted. The factory deliberately makes product overruns. The legitimate goods are sold to the contracted buyer -- in this case it would be Disney. The overrun goods are sold to someone else -- who then sells them through places such as the dollar store or other retailers. In some cases the retailer has no clue that the goods are not legit. The recent article mentioned finding pirated goods in large retailers and big box stores. The article last year went into gory details of some of the stuffing used in the pirated plush toys -- sawdust and used medical bandages were specifically mentioned. Both warned that the profits from the sale of pirated goods went to organized crime with the reminder that the pirated goods we purchase today pay for guns tomorrow.

My youngest dd and I went into a local dollar store and found disney and ashley scrapbooking products. We only paid $5.00 for a disney kit all kinds of papers and stickers, etc. I have never scrapbooked afraid of wrecking pictures. Some one told me to get doubles and scrapbook with one set and put other set in family album.
They looked legit. had barcode and said official disney product on it.
Can't wait to make disney pics come to life, we leave in about three weeks just got our us money and travellers cheques

I bought a Pooh lip smacker, not made by lip smacker but you know what I mean, lip what ever at the Dollarama. It was only a buck so the price was right. Only thing was it had an overly strong taste of orange and realy not good tasting at all. They usually do not have a strong taste to them. Worst of all was the taste of orange and coffee . Anyways no chapped lips but maybe that was why it was in the dollarama in the first place; because it didn't meet the quality standards but still good enough for consumption.

I was at a Dollarama in Alberta today.
I got Mickey and Minnie pens, the Pooh lipchap (which according to the last post is gross!!) And some really cute Disney gift bags (Princess ones, Nemo ones, Mickey and Goofy ones) and three rolls of wrapping paper. There was lots of Pooh stuff there too.
Authentic Disney or not? Dunno, but cute, cheap and looks good enough for me!!
